Re:AngrySiteKeeps Getting Worse

Yeah, but it's understandable, Peter, because it's all new to them. I remember joining the site and finding that "Loops vs. Creativity" thread and wishing I could post on it. But I saw that it was an old thread and knew from past net experience that resurrecting old threads is a no-no. However, not everyone knows that, and some of these old, long threads are full of passionate responses. That passion triggers emotions in others, and what's old and dead to us becomes brand new and important to them. So they post.

This IS a good thread, I see new members expressing themselves. It's a subject always worth hearing opinions on. |

Funny reply, but b.s. Sooo..you've read this before, If it bothers you, why are you reading it again? So what if newer members express their views. This site is for new and old members. I read this before, but am interested in new comments. Remember their is no past or present in cyberspace. I even like to read the Eric Clapton thread. btw, Mr. Pie you know you're wrong. Mr. Gibbon, you are like the the driver shocked and aghast by the car wreck, but you can't help looking at the scene. |

Mr.G, why so jaded? What happened to the wide-eyed optimistic alien? Does it really matter what we all know? Witty passages are just as valuable, even if the writer is the only one to enjoy it. 'Newbie' I think that term should be banned. 'Newbies seem' ... Are you lumping people into a category? Human history is full of this behavior, as you know. |

Yeah, we should have a new term, like "grumpbie"

No, witty comebacks written a year after the person they are directed at has left the room are, in fact, less valuable. Not to say there's no value at all (self-satisfaction is still satisfaction, however gained) but it's absolutely LESS valuable. Writing an answer to a technical question in a thread that was already thoroughly answered some half dozen times six month earlier really doesn't serve much purpose either. It's not a big deal and it's quite harmless. But it bugs me when people don't take the two seconds to check the date of the thread or to even bother reading any of the response posts to see what's already been said multiple times. What really does get me pissed off and offended is being compared, however lightly, to racists and bigots over the history of human kind for using the completely innocuous term "newbie", a term many of us use to describe ourselves when we are new to something or some place, particularly on the web. Coming from you, I'll try to take it as something said without malice, but it still really rubs me the wrong way. Now if a newbie comes to this thread and tells me to shove it up my ass then at least I know they are paying some attention.
Sooooo sleepy. |

I agree about the extremely-late witty comebacks, but...
...if the answer to a technical question is captured late, it's available to anyone else who searches for the answer and finds that thread. (I solve most of my technical problems through Google these days, and I appreciate finding answers, even those posted long after the initial query.) Oh, you did say "already thoroughly answered".

No malice. It's not the name 'newbie' I'm concerned with. I'm concerned for the person who may be new, who reads your thread and feels an established member is defining all new members as a certain way. You express your opinion about other people's intentions. You express your opinion about new members and their behavior. Of course, this is a forum. That 's your right. Of course I don't think you're a racist or a bigot, not at all. And now that I think about it, I'm not going to explain what I found uncomfortable about what you said or what other established members said. I just realized no matter what I said or say, you will focus on what I said that pissed you off. Man, you don't feel what I feel. It's cool. You know. |

Mr Oop, that's right I'm like a driver shocked and aghast by a car wreck, but still looking at it… that's exactly what I am. How silly of me… if I'd known that then I wouldn't have said anything. But now you've put it so eloquently I realize the error of my ways. I'm sure that Oscar Wilde couldn't have put it any better (though I guess he wouldn't have used the car wreck analogy). If something bothers me I should ignore it. Wow, that is fantastic advice… really helpful. Next time I see something that I think might bother me I'll stick my head in the sand instead. You'll be telling me next "if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem". It's easy to trot out truisms, isn't it?! There is no past or present in cyberspace, eh? What fortune cookie did you get that out of? Of course there's a past in cyberspace… some forums run their course and they go off the 'New Forums Posts' list. I'm not suggesting that people can't post on old forums but I sometimes wonder what the point is of someone who is clearly new to the site adding to an ancient forum that has gone on and on and on before with no obvious resolution, particularly when what they are adding doesn't appear to be breaking any new ground. I just get the feeling that they were incensed by the original comment, posted about 12 months ago, and then they replied to it. There is a past in cyberspace but someone may choose to ignore it. Joanna was right – I too understand that behaviour but I don't have to approve of it, nor should I have to ignore it. If someone wants to address some 'burning issue' on the forum posts then why not start a new forum? Or better yet, read through the old forums, digest what everyone else has said and then consider whether repeating it is really the best way to pick up the points you require. Do I get a nice Zen-style response now like, "Mr Gibbon, I realize that no matter what I say, you will just focus on the inane nature of what I originally wrote."
