MJ Vocals Game :V4C01
Wednesday, July 18 2007 @ 09:17 PM CDT
Here we go, the first round of the Voice4Choice Challenge begins now!
The song chosen for the first round of the Voice4Choice Challenge is an old Irish standard and one of my favorites, "The Minstrel Boy." The lyrics were written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) and set to an older melody known as "The Moreen." This tune has long been in the public domain and many, many renditions of it have been recorded. Now its your turn! Two versions of the vocals have been provided, male and female. Your guests vocalists for this round are esteemed MacJammers rschletty and rebsie, each of whom has graciously provided a brilliant performance just begging for accompaniment. Richard Schletty belts out a lively and proud performance. Rich's voice is clear and confident, perfect to capture the spirit of the male Irish singer. Rich was also my ideal go-to guy for this song because he's performed it before. His original rendition, recorded back in 2005, remains one of my all-time favorite MacJams songs. V4C01 Male C 95bpm -http://www.macjams.com/song/33643 ![]() In contrast to Rich, Rebsie transforms this martial tune into a drifting and atmospheric lullaby. Rebsie's gentle voice invokes visions misty evenings and softly rolling Irish hills. Her performance is remarkably tender and lovely. V4C01 Female A 75bpm -http://www.macjams.com/song/33644 ![]() The lyrics are arranged in two verses, each with four melodic lines based on just two melodies: aaba aaba. (See above links to notation for each of the vocal perfomances.) Your fellow MacJammers have provided the vocals, now its up to you to create the music. Download one of these outstanding performances and create your own version of this venerated Irish standard! Be sure to post a link to your song in this forum when you have it uploaded so we all know where to find it! I think that Rebsie's take is actually at 139 bpm. Or rather, 69.5 bpm, but I couldn't get it in sync at 75 bpm.

Perhaps the backing track had a sample rate of other than 44.1 kHz file and there was that time alteration that happens when you drag a different sample rate file into GB. But my understanding is that these things are all about challenges, so it certainly is no problem for me. |

I have this track and have been trying out either 140bpm or 70bpm. Thre's maybe a little creep at that BPM but I've now chopped up the audio a bit in Logic so you'd never notice.
My version's this huge psychadelic opus (well, it is in my head at least). I'd rather be listening to Revolving Doris's new EP. |

Yeah, on further working with the track, it does appear to be in 70 or 140. My version so far is fairly martial, but I've got some more psychedelic things in mind...

Game on!
Thanks Brian for organizing this new challenge - I can't wait to get started. It's better to regret something you have done, than something you haven't done. |

This sounds very cool! I'll download the tracks when I return from my vacation. I'm hoping to fit them into a song I started a week ago. It's at 77bpm, so hopefully I can make it work. |
