MJ Music Blog
Saturday, March 29 2008 @ 07:28 AM CDT

What do you think of the idea of an Official MacJams Music Blog, an ongoing weekly (or more) blog written (at first) by me about the music, members and musical events at Macjams?

The MJ Music Blog would begin with 4 main categories of content:
- Macjams Online Events (describing such events WoodstockFest, Analogapalooza, past LIOLIs, etc., to catalogue, in one place one of the things that make out community special)
- Artist Spotlight (interviews with MJ Members)
- Collaborations (discussing collabs, listing old projects, etc)
- Mining the Database (listing and talking about old favorites)

Songs and members highlighted in the Spotlight blogs would be up to me, as main blogger, but I would be wanting input from everyone to help me decide.

Would you want such a feature added to the site?
I have spent a ton of time on some past features, like Podcasts, yet the number of members who actually download Podcasts is very small. I want to know if Blogging would be worth the time. Or if it will be divisive in some way. Or simply ignored. Please let me know what you think.

I got the idea becuz I was reading in Mac Life about Songbird and Peel, apps that auto rip mp3s from id'd music blogs, and it got me thinking.

that sounds great. it's funny, just yesterday i was going to post an "MJ interviews" thread where i would just put up questions and have folks fill in the blanks.

could be really cool, might get more insight on how people work and what they are like as people. all for it.

What were the questions you were going to ask?
I was going to base the blog on emailed interviews too.

-influences
-main instrument
-gear used (DAW, most used plug-ins,hardware,instruments,etc...)
-any song posted on MJ that should have been a hit
-goals for your music
-how do you come up with a song
-how do you mix/master (details pleez)
-strongest point
-weakest point and how you get around it
-5 desert island records
-favorite plug in
-tips for others (musically and recording wise)
-how old were you when you got into playing music? why did you get into it?
-how old are you now?
-musical highlights
-first song ever written; good or bad? title? what did it sound like? could you play it now if
you had to? want to record it and post it at MJ?
-first band name

i didn't actually make a list yet, but these are a few that come off the top of my head. i was trying to think of some that could be fun to read as well as informative (for example my first song was an awful Kiss rip off called "rock n' roll destiny" that i could probably still play; and my first band was called Pegasus). i love seeing some humor and self deprecation in an interview and also picking up a few good tips.

Nice idea. I think the "interview" idea is cool, and some of the ideas suggested by michael2 are great. I find the equipment, techniques and approaches of other MacJammers fascinating.

P.S. Let me echo thetiler's comment, Tobin. What you do here is remarkable and, I think, under-appreciated. You rock. Peace.
