Videos on MJ
Wednesday, October 26 2005 @ 10:42 AM CDT

Video hosting is something that MJ really needs. Is there anything in the works that will provide this capability. Hopefully my examples have shown people that you can get an adequate video presentation from even a 4 MB file so bandwidth is not likely to be a significant consideration. In any case, this is just a request for something that I think will give MJ just a little more character, color, whatever you want to call it.

Altho I am not speaking for Admin here, yes, in conversations, Admin is considering all the ramifications of bandwidth, server space, etc. I suggested videos a year ago and they thought it was a great idea. I think they want to keep all files onsite, for the same reasons they want to house music files with CC agreements attached. My original idea was to create a flow thru interface page in which links and descriptions were provided, as a step one idea; but I think they'd prefer an onsite interface like the Song Pages. Videos would be as big a draw as music, especially with all the Mac software that integrates the two.

Great. Just what I need. Another black hole for time and funds.

Of course I can't wait to fire up the Emily Rohm video.

Count me in!

I'd like to see it work just like songs work now. I'd upload a video to the MJ server and it lives there with a page associated with it just as current songs have. I don't know why anyone would have a problem uploading a video as it really doesn't give that much away. The online version of a video is typically less than one percent of the size of a DVD-quality master video. There are multiple examples in which I've reduced 1 GB masters down to 3MB-4MB online videos and I'll be more than happy to continue helping people learn how to do that. On the Admin's side, I'd put a filesize limit on the videos to ensure people don't upload them unless they've been properly encoded.

Just make the standard iPod Export Smile that should make it easy for everyone. That is a good size and quality for the web too. It is a default export setting across all mac video apps as well as quicktime.

And FairyBeth! Hey CJ didnt you say somewhere you had pics of her in a little bo peep outfit or something?Anyway, Bring on the Macjams Video babes awards! Here's my list: FairyBeth, Emily Rohm, Mystified, K.I.S.Kismet, Listen, Hayley Deakin, Fairymagic. Anybody I've missed feel free to add yourself!

And for the love of the great old ones, tubby dudes are banned from making videos of themselves! They have to use animation, babes, closeups of liqour bottles or even particle effects. Butt no 'Right Said Fred' videos!

I'm not entirely convinced on this. Vodcasting via iTunes uses your bandwidth and the iPod defaults from a Quicktime export result in substantially larger files than if you set the video parameters yourself. No question that the audio / video quality is better but for the same length video, I'll generate about 3-4 MB whereas the iPod default will be 12-13 MB.

One big plus is that the iPod default is easy; you don't have to set any parameters at all. However, the iTunes audience through the Music Store is massive and it will definitely suck up some major bandwidth if you have a hit on your hands.

I currently don't have a song on my profile page. So, feel free to disregard this comment. I think uploading videos should be as simple as replacing the song art option with a .mov audio/video file instead of jpg or gif. Which would dim the mp3 upload since it would be included with the video. Have a file size limitation of both aspect ratio and MB. Unfortunately, quicktime still lags behind some of the other compression options when it comes to reducing file sizes while maintaining quality. QT or MPEG4 should be options for uploading on a Mac oriented site tho. As well as any other formats QT can handle decompression of. If MacJams doesn't implement this soon, they'll be beaten to the punch by one of the other hosting sites...if not already. But, I said that a year ago. However, now that iPods are doing video, me thinks it will be high on a developers/admins to do list. I hope MJ leads the way on this one. Simon and Miguel are usually two steps ahead of everyone else. I can't wait for the Slimmie video...or many other creative MJers on this site.

I realize I am a little overweight, so please be kind when you are talking about bandwidth.
