Re:Geting tired of this - be honest please!

Can you explain how something I write, play guitar, bass and sing on is not a piece of music because I used a drum loop? I'm looking for a technical explanation. Thanks. "An honest man's pillow is his peace of mind." John Mellencamp |

I feel I get honest feedback at this site. The critiques have helped me mix my songs better, plus have helped me in the handful of live gigs I've done. But it is so true that live performance is a whole other monster -- with some things that are quite difficult to control. I try to make it a point to post at MacJams highly "produced" songs as well as one-track, uncut recordings of me playing while I sing. Doing this will help to bring up both those areas -- production and performance.

As someone who does not care for the use of loops, I certainly can appreciate music that incorporates them. I see the biggest downfall of loops being that they somewhat dictate the outcome of the song. If someone is customizing a loop from scratch, then I wouldn't necessarily call it a loop in the spirit of a drag n drop loop. For those that use drum loops, why not seek out drummers to collaborate with? Just a thought. Rock on! Thread Killer |

Yes please explain to me also. Is 'demo' blues musician code for no talent? The fact that I spend weeks cutting and chopping drum loops and recording 5 million original guitar and bass lines for a song means I made a 'demo'? I think you're a jackass rover for even implying that because someone uses drum loops that they automatically negate any musicianship. I hope that statement wasn't too much feelgood bulldoodoo for you.. |

Machines don't need to practice, they get it the first time you tell them, they're always willing to try something new, they always keep good time, they know when to come in, they're able to do odd meters, they keep quiet when you want to talk about music, they never show up late or drunk, they won't sleep with your girlfriend...ahem...sorry. screaming.org |

I did not imply that just because you use drum loops you are not making music. If you took the trouble to actually read what I said, I stated that loops are perfectly appropriate to certain kinds of music, and inappropriate to others UNLESS YOU ARE TRYING TO STRETCH THE BOUNDARIES OF THAT STYLE. So please don 't put words in my mouth that stem from your own insecurities. Cheers

That's a load of crap, Rover. I quoted you exactly. It's hard for me to put words in your mouth when your foot's in the way. "An honest man's pillow is his peace of mind." John Mellencamp |

Direct quote from my original post "They seem to work fine for dance music and certain kinds of pop, and the theatre people don't care as long as you can hear the words. But they have no place in in, say, folk or blues unless you're deliberately experimenting with the form"

Here is the quote:
"They seem to work fine for dance music and certain kinds of pop, and the theatre people don't care as long as you can hear the words. But they have no place in in, say, folk or blues unless you're deliberately experimenting with the form - if you're using them because you can't find a drummer, then you made a demo, not a piece of music." So again I ask you... aside from it being your opinion- please tell me how it is NOT a piece of music and only a demo? "An honest man's pillow is his peace of mind." John Mellencamp |
