Yeah, I'm thinking the harsh criticism is sounding pretty good at this point.

I guess you are right. but, is it so bad to live in a lie, and beleive that people actually like your stuff? Ill quote I famous Norwegian Writer in norwegian, and 10 points to the first to translate it "tar du livsløgnen fra et gjennemsnittsmenneske tar du lykken fra det med det samme." From "The wild duck" By Henrik Ibsen

I've been working on the translation, i don't know norske, but I did live in Denmark for a few years, Ok here's the translation" It is better to be lied to from a stranger because you may benifit from it just the same". or something like that. Hils.

Also a lot of people just use loops so they can't really offer a lot of useful insight to a person making music from scratch since 90% of the production has been done already.

  1. person using loops => that person cannot offer insight to people mkaing music not using loops
  2. You're assuming that someone using loops cannot discern quality of a song, production, performance, arrangement, lyrics, singing, comparing the song to others in its genre both at MacJams and in the world at large, etc.. This is a poor assumption.
  3. song using loops => 90% of song production is already done
  4. You're assuming that midi loops do not require instrument assignment, loops do not have to be arranged across time and across the stereo spectrum and tracks, some song form (AABA, etc.) chosen, the loops are not being modified with effects, splicing, note transpositions, tempo changes, etc. This is a poor assumption.

very good points that i was wondering about. maybe loops don't require adding effects and things to produce them properly but in using them you still have to be able to hear what sounds good/

I'm no musician, just hopelessly in love.

Well, loops. They seem to work fine for dance music and certain kinds of pop, and the theatre people don't care as long as you can hear the words. But they have no place in in, say, folk or blues unless you're deliberately experimenting with the form - if you're using them because you can't find a drummer, then you made a demo, not a piece of music. And I see a huge problem with all the feelgood bulldoodoo around this site - presumably you want to play for a live audience once in a while, and if you have no idea of your strengths and weaknesses (not to mention a heavily inflated ego) because you let yourself listen to the crap around here you're going to fall flat on your face. And deserve it.

Why do you presume people here want to play out live once in a while? Some do, some don't. There's a lot who don't. There's a lot of people here who are just making music in GarageBand for fun. For them the faux positive praise isn't going to be so destructive. But you are correct that if you're going to be playing in front of real humans who don't know you, you need to be good, and if you're not there's a potential for a problem.
