Why do I keep reading this thread? It's like getting a tooth removed, and then your tongue can't help but probe the empty hole where the tooth used to be... I just keep coming back to this thread...

In some ways this thread has effectively combined some of the most annoying arguments of previous threads here at MacJams. Like some bizarro Greatest Hits album. We've got loops, we've got playing live, we've got value of comments, we've got ratings, we've got the whole clique thing, we've got people being too nice, lack of good feedback, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Could we also toss in possibly Mac vs. Windows and whether Clapton is God next? Followed by whether or not we should pay for a mastering house and whether GB should be used for "serious" music or everyone should upgrade to Logic.

I keed, I keed! This is a very nice thread.... (for me to poop on.)

Sorry man, but God's name is Chick Corea. Clapton may be an angel...

Man, i started this thread yesterday because i was in a bad mood and i wanted to put everything out. But guess what, today I'm finding this thread funny, because it seems that i was not the only one willing to talk. There were many clock-bombs out there waiting to explode... Laughing Out Loud

OK, lets start another one. My Mac is better than yours!

If you're using samples creatively, to push the envelopes of a style that normally does not
'appreciate' loops, then you fall on the "angels" side of my rant, and see no reason why you're getting upset. And I still hold that if all you're doing with your loops is 'building block' construction, then what you have created is the aural equivalent of sheet music, that needs live people (or more development) to turn it into music. Oh, and Mr Clarke, your first response on this subject was far too passionate to really be called polite - fine by me, I prefer passion to politeness any day. And if I had any pretensions to being a politician, the last thing I'd do would be kick this hornet's nest in this place. Cheers, Shaky

Oh, Joanna; the loops you can use are the ones I supply you with; eight hours a day minimum, constructing praise songs (to me,of course, in case you were in any doubt).

oh believe me i have been thinking the same thing. i sadly started another clapton thing when i got here because i didn't realize it had already been such a huge issue. i regretted bringing that whole thing back up lol. but hey it helped me get 1000 points in my first week here. eric is god mac sucks and gb is for losers... lol. i'm bad at pretending i'm an asshole. yes lets just throw all the over bitched about things into one place Smile and rename the thread need to bitch? there we go that's a good idea..

I don't have anything to say either. I'm just doing my bit to keep the thread alive.

Just so we're clear on this- my first response was a very politely phrased question.... the second was the more terse, passionate response. Here is that original query:

"Can you explain how something I write, play guitar, bass and sing on is not a piece of music because I used a drum loop? I'm looking for a technical explanation. Thanks."

Re-phrased- I write a piece of music- let's say it's rock, folk or blues. I record it... and on the recording I am playing or have live players performing all the guitar parts, the bass line (on a bass) and singing all the parts. I use drum loops because I don't have a drummer at my disposal. Now based on your comments, Shaky, what I've done would not fall on the "side of the angels" because of the style of music I'm writing. Am I understanding that correctly?

Now for argument's sake let's say I take that song with it's rudimentary, place-holding drum loop track and ask someone like perceptual vortex to re-work the drums. PV is a drummer not currently set up to record live drums. What he does is create a very real sounding drum track using his talent and various loops. Where does this fall?

Let's get this off the subject of rant and into a discussion about music, if we can.
