well, just because ya can properly "write" music doesn't make ya a musician. i know orchestra folk who if they had to improv / just play along they would pick their nose or their ass.

Yeah, but take your average loop mangler, who can neither think up his own notes, nor play play someone else's. How much of a musician is that?

Seriously, I'm open to the possibility that there are good loop-based compositions, but on this site I've seen preciously few. Two or three, tops.

Why don't I see any electronic music makers on Gargeband slicing beats?

I've wondered the same thing. Maybe GB doesn't have a beat slicer?

Not in GB... but I think I saw an infomercial the other night for "The Beat Slicer from Ronco™". Only $29.95! But if you call our toll free number now (operators are standing by) you'll also get.......

Didn't yours come with those attachments? I'm quite partial to the clarinet dicer and the gizmo that juliennes backbeats myself.

I think that everyone really should be able to be creative in their own way. Actually, tip for people that have the new version of GB that comes with Tiger. YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN LOOPS! So, hopefully we can avoid people bombing loop based songs, which is just downright unfair.

As a working musician for many years, I had what might be considered a "natural" prejudice against "loopsters." For the most part, the only loops I've ever used are for drums and complementary percussion.

However, I've come around to realize two things:
1) If these folks are having a good time and not hurting anyone — Let 'em Be.
2) For those who can't play an instrument, but who can write a decent lyric and who have a good singing voice, loops provide an opportunity for them to express themselves.

Loops provide them with a virtual, albeit limited, back-up band. What's wrong with that?

I don't believe any of them are claiming to be issuing musical breakthroughs or masterpieces. However, at least a handful that I've heard show some real vocal and lyrical talent that many "real" musicians might envy.

While there is some very good quality stuff posted on this site, only a very small percentage of it approaches any reasonable definition of musical virtuosity.

So if the looped music is somewhat limited and predictable, who cares? If the lyrical and vocal content is good, the loops could be substituted by real musicians, who would only make the piece better.

What of actual musical performances that lack a cohesive, interesting lyric... or that falter, or disappoint in their vocals? Those are not so easily remedied.

I guess what I'm really saying is this: We're all handed a different set of tools; we shouldn't be judged by which tools we use… but by what we manage to build with them.

You don't need to buy any beat slicing programs to slice beats in Garageband, I do it all the time. Just make all your regions big and then cut out audio sections in the editor. After that, loop and move around your cut audio sections to get some very cool mangled drum sounds. Why hasn't anyone thought of his before?
You can hear examples of GB beat slicing in al of my songs except Roboheads and Izkopine.

Loops vs Creativity..........

After reading this entire forum and suffering through the painful philosophical rhetoric It looks to me that most of the well seasoned musicans have a hard time accepting that just about anyone can make music using loops.

The tools that just a couple of years ago were only available to those with access to high dollar studios are now in the hands of just about anyone who cares to try them out.

I grew up in a musical family. High school band, choir, piano lessons... When I left home, I pretty much walked away from music (other than just being a listener). My father taught music at the high school and my younger brother went on to be a professional musician.

I guess what I am getting at is that GarageBand has reopened a door that I closed earlier in my life. To me, it doesn't matter if you are using canned loops or are recording each track live. It is the results that matter.

GarageBand has also been a way for my family to have something in common. My wife, children and even grandchildren are actively using GB. We collaborate and critique each others work. We all have different styles and preferences. But it has been a way for us to come together as a family.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody. Bill Cosby

I don't have less respect for someone who uses loops
but personally I get a really empty unfulfilled feeling
when I have used them. I'd only use the apple loops as a last resort.
But I think that music should be enjoyed because it sounds good
and that a person like myself has no right to say another person's
music is not music because they utilize loops.
However, I do not use pre-made loops, I may use looped sequences
that are original, but I never use any that I haven't sampled personally.

Hi. I have only jumped around this thread. Some interesting finds for sure.I'm enjoying the posts dealing with things others have done that I was unaware of. Cool.I must say however the notion that if a child were to assemble a bunch of loops it would sound awful leaves out perhaps the whole essence. It isn't about what you think. It is about the chllds' feelings about it. Which kind of brings it full circle. At the end of the day it really only truly matters to the creator of the piece. Taylor
