As a new subscriber of the Direct TV Offer, I was able to receive this receiver as a new subscriber upgrade for FREE. What’s more is that this receiver will pick up over the air HD channels that normally would require another chunk of money for another receiver. This unit does both and, best of all it includes TiVo, which in my opinion made it a great deal.
The receiver’s performance is outstanding with both the Direct TV HD channels and the over the air HD channels. I even found it improved the picture of the standard definition channels coming into my home. I’ve seen direct TV receivers of some of my friends and co-workers that only have an S-video output, whereas this one has component, HDMI, and DVI outs so that there is an undiminished digital transfer of the picture from the receiver to the TV. What I also like is that this model has allowed me to send my direct TV signal to two different rooms in my home, and that in each room someone can be watching something different. No more compromising is necessary!
Setup looked tricky to me. We have a flat roof and my husband is pretty handy so he took care of the whole thing in a couple of hours. Unless you or someone you know is really handy I would suggest having the direct TV and the receiver set-up and installed by a technician. If it weren’t for my husband I know I would have!
I’ve never had Tivo before, and now that I have it I would never do without. Raising a small child has kept me too busy with responsibilities to watch some of my favorite shows. Prime time is unfortunately bath and bedtime too! Now, however, I don’t miss any show unless I want to. What is really fun, I have found, is to store an entire season of me and my friends’ favorite show and have little marathons together when we have time to spare away from jobs and families.
All in all I highly recommend not only Direct TV, but this receiver in particular to television viewers (direct or otherwise) who want to move into Tivo and high definition. It really is very easy to use. Easily some of the best money spent this year.
