Description:
This is a traditional song, which has many variations of lyrics and has been set countless times to various musical settings.
I hope I've managed to compose an original setting for this using the familiar melody.
My goal was to create something calm, soothing and placid.
This is also my return to playing a keyboard after a good 10 years hiatus. Thank goodness for the track editor in GarageBand!
*Skipper, this one is for you, as you were the one who inspired it....
Thank you.

Impressive arrangement &mdash 05/15/05 - 06:20:30 AM
The chords you have chosen, especially for the interludes
between verses, are what really stay with me, make this
arrangement so memorable. Then I was KO'd by the
Mystified harmonies. A lovely New Age rendition, Cat.
One suggestion (keep in mind I'm scoring this 9-7-8-9) is
that you end the piece with some variation of that
progression you feature between verses, instead of the
slow arpeggio on the major chord. I just really like the
interlude. Great piece. [ Reply to This ]
Impressive arrangement &mdash 05/15/05 - 11:32:36 AM
Thank you for those comments, Tom. I sort of 'heard' the interlude and then
worked out the rough chord progressions afterwards. All the same, there is
more of intuition and less of theory in the creation of this arrangement.
As for the ending, it's what i 'heard' as well, though the suggestion of
returning to the interlude theme surely makes sense.
Thanks, again, for your careful listening and thoughtful comments :)

I'm so glad that you like this :)
I'm venturing more often into the "New Age" category lately--probably
because I like the ambient style of vocals and the ethereal nature of the
music.
Not sure I've even heard a New Age version of Shenandoah...but here one is,
LOL.
Thanks, again. Your comments are so appreciated :) [ Reply to This ]

The song is, in fact, much older than I (see the comments below that address
the song's history), but I'm surprised it's stayed 'this side of the pond' so to
speak...
Thank you for your lovely comments, Fairy Beth. They do mean alot to me :) [ Reply to This ]

21st Century Folk &mdash 05/16/05 - 10:58:16 AM
Nice reading of a classic American folk song. You have captured all of the longing that makes this music so alluring and enduring.
Regarding Fairy Beth's comment about not being familiar with the "original," there's wide speculation as to the origins of "Shenandoah." The %u201CGreat American Song Treasury%u201D of 1964 gives it a date of 1826. Some scholars speculate it was born in the Appalachians, then worked its way downriver to the Gulf of Mexico where it became a "sea chantey". In the process the Shenandoah Valley of the Appalachians became an Indian chief who's daughter was the object of a sailor's affections. Others suggest the Shenandoah mentioned is
more likely the city in Southwestern Iowa, more consistent with the reference to the "Wide Missouri" river. Still others have attributed it to French Canadian voyageurs plying the waters of northern lakes and rivers. Whatever the mysterious origins and multiple interpretations, it has proven to be one of the most popular of all American folk songs, and Mystified's version here not only shows why it is such a beautiful song, but she also demonstrates how to make the folk tradition relevant to the 21st Century through the power of GarageBand.
