Description:
This is the new extended version of the previously posted song "I Won't Go Softly." The last version was made from loops, and Fellow MacJammer Jim Bouchard generously offered to redo the song with some rockin' guitars and piano instead. So now the backup has all been done by Jim. I really love what he's done with it. I believe he used JamPack4 for a few things, and his own guitar and bass. A dreamy spooky bridge hads been added as well as a repeated chorus at the end. James did some funky cool stuff with effects at the end, too. I re-recorded the vocals to lessen the clipping, but there is still a bit of distortion (since I had to use the pinhole mic). Play it loud or use headphones because the overall volume is low (to lessen some distortion). Hope you like it! The artwork is by Diane Fenster. Lyrics:
My bags are packed and ready to go
You've caused more damage than you'll ever know
You're sweetly sleeping in your bed
While I'm going out of my head

As per your request I will be gone
By the time you wake up in the morn
I may go calmly in the night
But I won't let go without a fight

I won't go softly
I won't go quietly out of your life
I won't go softly
You can't leave me, you don't have the right

I'm not obsessed, don't be absurd
I simply hang on your every word
It's not the time for this to end
I don't want to be your f***ing friend

I'm sorry, that was not required
I'm feeling a little overtired
I just can't sleep without you there
Don't you make me go, now don't you dare

I won't go softly
I won't go quietly out of your life
I won't go softly
You can't make me you don't have the right

Will you dream of me
while your sleeping peacefully
Will you dream of me tonight...

I won't go softly...

Hardware:
12" powerbook, me on the pinhole mic, James on guitars & bass

This was bound to work &mdash 05/16/05 - 09:10:45 AM
I had a feeling this would be good, when I saw the
collaboration. This is a much more organic version than
the original, much more alive and, more frightening.
Excellent job of taking a concept--dangerous obsession--
and fleshing it out musically. If that makes sense.

My only suggestion is to consider adding some
nightmarish harmonies to the chorus, a choir of deranged
Emilies...

Nice work, both of you.

Thanks Atwood! I tried to do a bit of a scary chorus of me with the oh's at the
end, but you are right, some harmonies would be cool. Thanks for checking it
out.

dirty guitar &mdash 05/16/05 - 02:16:57 PM
Well, the dirty burning guitar is there alright, it's a great
production. The "mysterioso bridge" is very refreshing and
makes you curiously waiting for what's next. One of the
better songs at MacJams. Very human! I wouldn't add a thing,
because it's already fully arranged! Maybe some rests
between your lines, although it would take the adrenaline off!

Loops are useful, but they can't beat the real deal on
tracks like this.

An amazing sound.

for the gearheads: &mdash 05/16/05 - 02:58:43 PM
I used a Mexican Standard Strat for the rhythm guitar in the chorus and My very old Les Paul Junior with P-90s in it for the leads. these run through the pedalboard: a Fulldrive 2-modified Boss SD-1 SuperOverdrive- Boss DD-20 Gigadelay- into a Peavey Delta Blues. Mic-SM-57
Keys played on the Kurzweil KME-61,
Drum loops are by Drums on Demand.
There's a conga /bongo loop on the last round of choruses by AMG
Bass is an Epiphone Accubass going direct into GB using the Edgy Bass preset.

But I can't believe that's pinhole mic!

killer &mdash 05/16/05 - 05:56:14 PM
awesome.....JB is one of my fav git players here and emily is
just killer on vocals....sonic production could have been
better with a better mike but killer nonetheless......

awesome...again &mdash 05/16/05 - 07:58:06 PM

vocals could be a bit louder tho, cause it's still the
best part.

unique voice &mdash 05/16/05 - 08:57:08 PM
your voice is very unique ... you are able to reach very full
sound on the pinhole mic ... no small accomplishment ...
but you REALLY would have something special on the
better mic! ... i hope that you do this sometime! ... i
especially loved the bridge ... cool in the extreme! ... this
is not the usual kind of music i listen to, but i should tell
you, that I enjoyed it ...

Emily :) &mdash 05/16/05 - 09:17:49 PM
Emily is rockin and my knees are a knocking. This piece
rocks. .

Ok I am a stickler about swear words being in on tunes,
not that I don't swear, I know I shouldn't but I do
sometimes so who am I to judge. Maybe Emily, you are
making me more forgiving and bending my biasses. So if I
am guilty of bending my principles, then I have to pay the
price for what ever it be.

I do this because I think your are a real special singer! You
do have a talent for belting em out.

Thanks emily for being such a good addition to Macjams.

Thanks Jim for being such a good addition to Emily's
singin.

Thanks Tiler. Glad to hear you could bend your rules for me. *wink* I'm not
usually one to write a song with "explicit" content...It was a surprise to me
too! Hey, you never know what will come out sometimes. Isn't it ironic that I
sat down to write for your song called "Softly" and this is what came out?
Strange how inspiration creeps up!

..great vocals. wonderful range. i recon this song has a
strong flavour of alanis morrisette attitude to it - the
vocals are also similar to alanis' style. But...it is still a very
unique piece. exellent instrumentals by JB. Good job guys.

Ripping good &mdash 05/17/05 - 07:23:06 PM
The voice/the guitar! Both make it for me.
Emily, when you let loose, you're on such a great level.
That's my favorite vocalization, very full of emotion.
Jim, awesome guitar coming out of everywhere, and so
evenly matched with Emily's intensity! wow!
Great combo!

Nice. &mdash 05/18/05 - 05:34:08 PM
Really liked this tune. Fabulous guitar playing with a very
"live" feel, great tones. Same for vocals... would have
been better with a "real" mic for something with a bit
more presence. Did i hear Janis (not Alanis) in there
somewhere.

Keep up the great work.

Actually, Emily, it might've been a compliment, you never know; at best it's sort of irrelevant. Takes all types I guess...Surprising someone would waste the keystrokes. ...lol!

smacking with power. both musically and vocally...

and then...

expletive usage &mdash 05/20/05 - 10:33:12 AM
In general I find the use of expletives in songs vulgar, but your insertion of the "F word" here not only fits perfectly into the storyline - it also aptly accords with the way your emotionally explosive raw voice claws the listener. Excellent piece, Emily, in both writing and performing.

Powerful and emotionally intense ... very well sung

middle. Maybe a good condenser mic would do better
justice to your great voice, Emily, but apart from that
it's excellent. A good strong song!

This is a big step up. You really belt it out nicely. lot's of
power and fire, and Jim lays down a great music bed. Very
cool. It would definately be worth buying a decent mic and
input device for you to sing into. While the sound is
impressive for a pinhole mic it's still a pinhole mic. Your
voice desrves better.

Loads of dark atmosphere. Fabulous playing and singing -
lots of tension, lots of soul, lots of reach and depth. I Like
the floaty interlude (even if Emily begins to sound like
Morrissey for a moment). If I had a record company I'd sign
yer - a cracker!

OK, Jim Bouchard knows talent when he hears it too, Emily! lol!

Great singing. Tons of emotion and expression. Your pitch is perfect. Pinhole mic? NO WAY! Sounds great.

Great playing, Jim. Way to make your guitar scream. Awesome arrangement and all-around musicianship, too.

loads of edginess and very hip sound! It's rare to come across music with so much genuine creative energy and mature sense of drama and composition. Reminds me very much of Nina Storey and I offer that in the highest regard. You have your own extra touch which very few singers seem to have. The backing tracks are excellent as well. keeps it firmly in alt. genre.
