Description:
Another off-the-cuffer. I just improvised through the guitar parts and bass ONCE then set about cut and pasting what I had.
The lyrics were all made up on the spot too, although verses that were meaningless were dropped half-cooked verses spliced with other half-cooked verses to form luke warm verses.

Anyway, the song is about the insane debt-fuelled consumer boom that has ravaged the UK for the past 5 or 6 years, turning every town into a bland expanse of glossy retail units, while hyperinflation in rents and housing has economically cleansed the poor , the young and the elderly.

Don't worry - the song isn't as po-faced as it sounds, although the 'Gordon Brown as consumerist temptress' is pretty damn cringeworthy'. I also don't know if you can say 'economic cycle' in a song without it being a major afront to art.

Limahl, of course, was an 80s pop singer who I barely remember and only think about now because every fashion victim has his haircut - usually from hair-chain Tony and Guy.

Lyrics:
They said they’d mastered the economic cycle
Replaced it with s-s-sustained growth
What a lot of drivel. What a lot of bollocks.
Now we’re facing a recession
How you doin?

Dontcha wish you never bought all that
…. Chinese tat
Now you gotta pay it back
And your flexible friend’s broken off the friendship

This consumer nation is fucked
Sticking it into landfill – when will it stop?
Shouldn’t you have saved a bit like your grandmother?
In the good times put some pennies away?

Oh my god the money supply is
…. Contracting today
You gotta pay it back with interest
NatWest always have their way

Didn’t you think that big mortgage was cool?
Boasted about it at the dinner parties
… and the BBQs
Now the interest rate is on the climb
And hello debt-slave – what you doing this time?

Don’t you wish you’d never climbed on board
… the consumer trap
Is it really worth having shit
You gotta slave to pay back?

Gordina Brown had a booming bust
And she jiggled it in your face?
She said it’s Christmas every day!
And encouraged you to masterbate

What we call a recession is the rich man’s
…. Bargain sale
Where he hoovers up everything
And leaves you feeling pale

It’s like the 80s all over again
Everybody’s got a haircut like Limahl
And everyone’s obsessed with the price of their houses
They’re gonna be pissed off when they fall
Let’s hold a free festival
\Build something better again
To act like reminder that we’re not just
…. Bean counters’ data

Nice one &mdash 05/17/05 - 09:04:07 AM
I'm glad someone is taking a stand against the
homogenisation of our town centres and an economy
based on marketing overpriced junk to the gullible.
Not a bad song, either.

Improvising lyrics is a very brave thing to do ... but
gives it a nice spontaneity.

... and an acoustic guitar. Stream of consciousness venom.
It's one of those great pieces that work just for what they
are and shouldn't be
tinkered with.

very crisp and clean production. the words are acerbic,
but hugely relevant. has a light reminiscence for me of
Midnight Oil, especially in message content.

fav line:
"Shouldn't you have saved a bit like your Grandmother?"

sums it all up, doesn't it.

this is a rockin' tune that left me a bit raw. the title alone
was worth the admission price, but the lyrics are the true
winner of this one. brutally true. what i dig a lot is that
you actually offer a solution at the end. not a major
solution to cleanse the issue(s), but something attainable
like a "free festival."

i admit, i often get caught up in the day to day and forget
myself. songs like this bring me right back down to
ground and remind me that there's crap in the world to be
acknowledged and even wrung out now and then.

for that, i say thanks! nice job with this song. poor, poor
Limahl, tho... heh!

crapola rant.

Great improv! &mdash 05/23/05 - 11:50:05 AM
The fact that this is off-the-cuff keeps it real. Love that
80s punkish rock!! Your voice is awesome for this! Like
the line "what we call a recession is the rich man's bargain
sale." Very cool.

is love. Just kidding.
