Description:
A traditional Scottish lullaby, given the Mando-Rebsie treatment. We thought we'd never get it posted with all the hauntings and strange file disappearances we've had ... but here it is.
Rebsie: voice, Celtic harp
Mandolinquent: mandolin, whistle, keyboard, bodhran ...
Mandolinquent also found us the song and did most of the arranging and mixing. And re-recording.
You're a star, Mando!
Photo taken at Callanish stone circle, Isle of Lewis (on very grainy film)
Lyrics:
Can ye no' hush your weepin' o
A' the wee lambs are sleepin' o
Birdies are nestlin', nestlin' together
Dream Angus is hirplin' o'er the heather
Dreams to sell, fine dreams to sell
Angus is here wi' dreams to sell
Hush ye my bairnie and sleep without fear
Dream Angus has brought you a dream my dear
Sweet the lavrock sings at morn
Heraldin' in a bright new dawn
Wee lambs they coorie down together
Alang wi' their ewies in the heather
List' to the curlew cryin' o
Fainter the echoes dyin' o
Even the birdies and beasties are sleepin'
But my bonny bairn is weepin', weepin'
hirplin' = hobbling
lavrock = skylark

gentle and haunting &mdash 05/18/05 - 01:22:34 AM
Great vocals Rebsie, I like the way the other instruments
enter in too, wouldn't have minded hearing them slightly
higher in the mix. I really like the 'darker' keyboard
sounds that come in towards the end. It has a feel of
corrupted innocence to it. I guess Macca did steal this
melody for his MOK track too! Thanks for sharing

Thanks a lot for your support, Steve! You've spotted where McCartney
nicks his ideas from too. Glad you like the 'dark' keyboard ... we were
trying to get a spooky edge to the song. Cheers! [ Reply to This ]

Your voice is perfect for this! Simple and pure. I'd love to
hear the history of the song... When I first saw the title I
thought Dream Angus could be the next Burger King
meat-normus. sandwich... Ha! I didn't know what to
expect, but this was great. Thank you. [ Reply to This ]

I meant to spell it "meat-normous"...I know it's not even a real word, but I still
had to correct myself. Didn't mean to have that period after it either. Blah. I
can't type. [ Reply to This ]

Thank you so much, Emily. It would make a good name for a burger ...
very funny! I'm delighted that you like the song.
Normally I'm incredibly nerdy about the history of the songs I do, but I
haven't been able to find out much about this one. 'Dream Angus' is a
Scottish version of the sandman ... going around helping children to
sleep ... or frightening them into pretending to be asleep. The words are
apparently not of great antiquity ... though there is a Gaelic version
which is probably much older. [ Reply to This ]

Help! My ewie is hirplin'! &mdash 05/18/05 - 03:09:52 AM
Beautiful, Rebsie and Mando. You make quite an
impressive pair. A lovely old country lullaby feel to this. I
love the spareness of the arrangement (yet full of
interesting instrumental sounds). [ Reply to This ]
Help! My ewie is hirplin'! &mdash 05/18/05 - 03:20:27 AM
Thanks Joanna! It didn't start out as such a simple setting ... but the
ghost stole half the instruments. And then we thought ... well ... maybe
the ghost has a point.
Glad you like it. [ Reply to This ]

Very well done, you two. Very haunting lullaby. Lulling
then spooky, appropriatly spare instrumentation behind a
beautiful singing performance. [ Reply to This ]

Hirple on to the Weekly Picks! &mdash 05/18/05 - 06:41:19 AM
I like the way the stringed instruments sort of jingle in a
very delicate way. Perfect for Rebsie's soothing vocal. I'm
getting verrrry sleepy.
Such a lovely lullaby. When I hear lyrics like "Wee lambs
they coorie down together/Alang wi' their ewies in the
heather" I feel the decline in language in general. It's like,
you know, whatever.
Happy to send you to the Weekly Picks (and your eventual
doom). 9-8-9-9 [ Reply to This ]

Precious &mdash 05/18/05 - 07:07:46 AM
A precious lullaby. Delicate and sweet, cherished and very
well arranged. I normally like to hear all the breaths of of
female singers, but there is something that makes this
seem a bit out of breath, especially in the middle verse,
keeping it from the complete relaxing feel I was hoping
for. Wonderful instrument choices in the background. [ Reply to This ]
Precious &mdash 05/18/05 - 07:40:44 AM
I know what you mean, Tobin, it was a trade-off ... to get a very delicate
vocal I had to be close to the mic, and it's picked up everything. I'm
going to experiment, see if I can find a better way of doing it. Thanks for
commenting! [ Reply to This ]

done with the instruments! Love the harp! :)

talked me into it. [ Reply to This ]
Harps, etc... &mdash 05/19/05 - 10:14:34 PM
Haha...you and your harp. Me and my keyboard...
Sometimes we amaze even ourselves, eh?
Truly, though....really, really nice work on the harp. Hope to hear more of the
same in future songs! :) [ Reply to This ]
sleepy &mdash 05/18/05 - 09:03:35 AM
this is very sweet piece ... some pleasing textures with the
plucked instruments ... however, breathing in vocals
makes tension occasionally ... some strange passing notes
towards end ... it would be my guess that lullabies are
supposed to be repetitive, to lull you to sleep ... this one
did ... [ Reply to This ]

Lullabies should be sleepy, yes ... but maybe slightly creepy as well.

Soothing and Ageless &mdash 05/18/05 - 09:21:39 AM
Part of my heritage is Scottish so I appreciate you bringing
some of it my way. I think Dream Angus makes his way
across the Atlantic also. Some of my dreams lately! I did
have some problem with some of the words: hirplin, bairn,
and corrie? I love the delicate singing and arrangement on
this and can't imagine one with a lot more instruments
being any better. Great Job! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks very much for your comments, bronco. Rough translation:
hirplin' = hobbling or limping
bairnie = baby or child
coorie = snuggle [ Reply to This ]

Traditional songs are wonderful. They seem to have a life of their own
once you start working with them ... take you in directions you hadn't
thought of.
There will be plenty more of these, don't worry... [ Reply to This ]
Soothing sounds &mdash 05/18/05 - 01:29:01 PM
I love this, even though it does seem sparse (course,
coming from someone who thrives on ambient electronica
that would mean nothing). You've got the perfect voice for
a lullaby, and the interplay between the mandolin and
harp is perfect.
But wait - you play celtic harp?!? :D Hm, would you be
willing to add something to some of my tunes? [ Reply to This ]
Soothing sounds &mdash 05/18/05 - 06:27:33 PM
In principle I would, yes. I'm still on a steep learning curve with it after
years of disuse ... and I should mention that Celtic harps have a limited
range of notes and can only play in certain keys ... but if none of that
puts you off then I'd be happy to help.
Thanks very much for your lovely comments. [ Reply to This ]

could you move away from the mike a bit? When you
inhale, you can really hear it.

the entrance of the various instruments are played against
the innocence of the vocals in a most remarkable way. [ Reply to This ]
