Description:
This is my first complete song generated entirely on my Powerbook. All drum, bass & synth programming, electric and acoustic guitars and all backing vocals by Darren Chapman. Lead vocals and lyrics by Tim Triolet.
Thanks to all who volunteered their ears on my early mixes. Your input was invaluable.
Comments, suggestions and critiques are welcome... it's my first complete Mac song and any more suggestions to make it better are appreciated.
Lyrics:
All my friends have gone away again
Now I sit alone a dying man
All my life I've lived a lie
Believed it true in my minds eye
Now I sit alone a haunted mess
Now all I fear has come to life
In my mind, what I thought integrity
False pride inside of me
Now I cry
Just a victim of my own demise
All my life I've had a dream of grandeur
Totally denying mindful ways
All I took I felt I gained
Fearful truths they now invade
Now I live within my grand illusion
In my mind, what I thought integrity
False pride inside of me
Now I cry
Just a victim of my own demise

Full bore dread &mdash 05/18/05 - 10:47:15 PM
For a withered soul, Triolet sure belts it out. Production is flawless, as far as I can tell. Excellent playing and synth noodling, Chapman. Great song construction. The varied angles of attacks on the repeating lyrics prevents repetiveness. It's a wrap. [ Reply to This ]
Haunting. &mdash 05/18/05 - 10:48:05 PM
This is well put together! Vocals are good. I especially like
his tone on the lower parts. Guitar parts are powerful
without being overwhelming. Heavy metal is certainly not
my forte so I don't have many intelligent things to say but
I enjoyed this. [ Reply to This ]
Impressive &mdash 05/18/05 - 10:53:10 PM
Wow! Some great playing in this! I'm impressed. I'm not
the best at offering comments for this particular genre, so
I'll just say that ...yup....it's very impressive! Love the voice
as well--matches the heavy metal all the way.
My only nit is that maybe the vox could be a *little* more
forward in the mix. It got buried a couple of times to my
ears--but again, maybe that's the genre, too.
Very well done! [ Reply to This ]
Yeah! &mdash 05/19/05 - 12:20:46 AM
Thanks for letting me check out the work-in-progress. This
final version sounds really stunningly excellent. Everything
fits just right and sounds full. Great singing and playing,
and I love the way you used that synth ambient loop ( I think
that's what it is); it really makes an excellent sonic contrast
to the guitars. As I told you before, it has a bit of a Stone
Temple Pilots sound to it (which is great). Excellent job all
around; well written and executed. [ Reply to This ]
Yeah, too! &mdash 05/19/05 - 04:29:57 AM
This is perfect! Your attention to every detail has paid off
well here. Everything sounds balanced- excellent guitar
sound, vocals (lead and backup) are spot on. Very tasty
lead... as I told you before very Blue Oyster Cultish.
Downloaded (to replace the earlier versions) and faved! [ Reply to This ]
Deserved pride &mdash 05/19/05 - 07:17:54 AM
Crystal clear production, very present and alive. Radio
ready in every way. Very cool guitar, great changes,
everything sounds like real instruments and is balanced
perfectly. I like how you didn't drench anything
in reverb, yet when the singer goes into his upper
register during the verses, I feel like a touch of reverb
would help (the chorus "In my mind" is perfect, but the
"All my life" seems too dry for some reason in my ears).
Great guitar solo. Wonderful brooding track, haunting
sections. I can see this performed live, licensed for film,
on a CD. Really great work. [ Reply to This ]

faith in heavenly father &mdash 05/19/05 - 08:33:19 AM
It's easy to be a victim in this world, look at all the alcohol
abuse, tearing up families right and left. If we try in our
hearts to do what is right and let the consequence follow
then things will turn for our good. It may not seem great
at the time though. I guess that is what is meant by faith.
. .
The negative elements in this world want you to loose
faith in a higher heavenly power were you can become a
victim to man made culture's wisdom and there is a whole
lot of culture in the United States especially, just ready to
suck us down the tube.
Lotsa of talent here in your tune!
Thanks for all the hard work to make that talent. [ Reply to This ]
Hey dude... &mdash 05/19/05 - 08:40:07 AM
...this is great. Reminded me of the 'Pull' album by winger.
Don't be offended, I love that album. The rest of their stuff
was pretty lightweight but 'Pull' rocked. This track is
actually heavier but reminded me nevertheless. Keep on
going.

Wow, I didn't think that anyone ELSE on the planet owned that album. It was
by far their best... never considered it as an influence though, maybe the
tapping a'la Reb Beach... loved his playing.

That rocks... &mdash 05/19/05 - 10:33:21 AM
Thanks for sharing. Excellent production and a very cool
Alice in Chains/Jerry Cantrell kind of sound. Well done.
Maybe when I grow up I'll produce and play like that. [ Reply to This ]

Very cool. Alice in Chains came to mind to me as well. Nice and heavy, loud, crunchy. Overall a great job. --D [ Reply to This ]
Your handle on production is fantastic &mdash 05/19/05 - 06:57:17 PM
Completely professional. I sometimes felt that the song
drags just a tad, but that's really just a nit. Good brooding
sound. Thanks for the early listens on this one! [ Reply to This ]
Well done &mdash 05/19/05 - 08:35:13 PM
Professional sounding production.
One strange thing to my ear is the choice of melody in the
first line of the chorus "In my mind". The word "mind" is
sung in two notes, F sharp to D whereas it would have
flowed better (in my humble opinion) going from A to D. I
hope this is constructive.

strong silky smooth production &mdash 05/20/05 - 06:37:45 AM
loved opening hook the most. it hooked me into main
body of song which also delivered. curious---- what's
your guitar setup? are we listening to amp simulators? [ Reply to This ]
strong silky smooth production &mdash 05/20/05 - 07:11:01 AM
This tune is using the apple amp simulators. I was experimenting with them
to see how good I could make them sound. They turned out pretty good I
think... but needed alot of tweaking to get there. [ Reply to This ]
strong silky smooth production &mdash 05/21/05 - 11:22:09 AM
I think they are indeed quite good. Surprising, as you might never know.
Great heavy sound, almost humbucker fat, nice sustain...almost an e-bow
sound at times.
I really like this! The whole thing!

Yeah... solidly good rock &mdash 05/20/05 - 05:39:43 PM
Very classic sounding. And your vocals too are
down the middle hard rock. I love your guitar riffs with
harmonies(?). Very cool. Glad to see you posting
some songs. Top hard rock material here, my man! But
you suspected as much : )

Well produced without sounding synthetic &mdash 05/21/05 - 09:20:52 AM
And that's probably because most of it isn't synthetic.
Very cool changes. Excellent production. Definitely
rocks.
Coolest of all is to hear new material. I lost track after
you were uploading tunes from your original band and I
had hoped you would move forward from there. Very glad
to see you pushing a new tune and I don't see a thing
wrong with a shameless plug. [ Reply to This ]
Production is outrageous &mdash 05/21/05 - 11:06:09 AM
Every detail of this is perfect in my opinion Darren. All
instruments fit with vox.....vox fits with
instruments....flawlwess. The production values are
stunning and care to those details has really paid off.
Most excellent work...great song! [ Reply to This ]
impressive &mdash 05/22/05 - 09:40:32 AM
you do all this on mac by yourself? ... very impressive! ...
oh, i see you use Logic ... is that much better than
garageband? ... perhaps this is why song sounds better
than average? ... excellent guitar, vocals and production ...
i especially like bell sound in synth ... brightens up mix
nice ... i do not like metal as rule but this was good ... [ Reply to This ]
excellent &mdash 06/03/05 - 12:02:25 PM
Well, I'm finally back on site to check out a tiny fraction of
what I've missed over the past few months...your tune is
one of the first I've heard this go 'round.
This is truly excellent, both from a production standpoint
and for musical content. Lots of interesting stuff in this
mix. It's very well put together.
I don't usually gravitate towards the metal genre but this
tune is tastefully done.
I don't have any "nits" to pick on this tune. I think it is one
of your best yet that you've posted here. [ Reply to This ]

You backed up your reputation with this &mdash 06/13/05 - 08:24:57 AM
First thanks for stopping by to comment on one of my songs. Had a little computer trouble and wasn't able to post when this first came out but I'm back up now.
I have to admit I've been waiting for this first complete submission from you. You put out a lot of advice in the forums and I wanted to see you talk the talk. I think you nailed just about every aspect of what your all about. I believe you have set a standard to look up to on production from Logic. The song writing for this genre was perfect. I get the feeling that you don't look at yourself as a lead guitar player but I also thought your solo was perfect for this song. I try to comment on peoples' work but I usually am not a very good critic. Just wanted to let you know what I thought of your first from the ground up submission. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks for your kind words. I did put a lot of effort into this song. I'm glad
to see that it's realized.
Thanks again.

Rockin' and great.. &mdash 06/15/05 - 10:56:08 PM
Take it from this old school metalhead...your song rocks! Great songwriting, great vocal performance, great guitar tones, and a fantastic guitar solo that makes its point without silly noodling. You even have a great lead tone in here.
I am truly amazed that you recorded all of this with Logic EXPRESS! I was all set to buy the Mbox/Pro Tools Le setup tonight, but the production of this incredible song has me taking pause.
A great tune, truly. [ Reply to This ]
Rockin' and great.. &mdash 06/16/05 - 11:03:12 AM
Thanks for your comments.
I think that the software is merely the tool. Don't let my production with LE
sway you from a purchase you're thinking about. I could have done this
production with Cubase, ProTools or DP. I just chose LE for all of it's Mac
friendliness (it's nice to convert those old GB files) and price.
But it is indeed a fine program and worth checking out! Thanks again.

I was very impressed when I heard this, as were a lot of other
people, as I can see from the posts. You guys sound great! I
agree with the Alice in Chains references. I can definitely see
the similarities. My friend made the comment that you guys
sound like professionals. Record deal material. Very nice! [ Reply to This ]
Slick Production &mdash 08/27/05 - 01:41:42 PM
I have heard some other well produced songs on MacJams
but this one probably tops them all. I agree with one of the
other posts that states they feel the song drags on a little.
Other than that the song is great. The vocals and guitar are
very Alice N Chains like which is pretty cool. Lets hear some
more! When does the album come out? [ Reply to This ]
Phenomenal &mdash 08/29/05 - 04:06:10 PM
I am speechless. You are totally what I aspire to be. Your
production is superb. I prefer clean sounds for metal and
hard rock rather than sludge and your stuff is right there.
It's how I hear my music in my head. Of course, you have the
gear, the talent and the patience and effort to make it
happen. Consider me a big fan. [ Reply to This ]
I like the way it fades in &mdash 10/07/05 - 10:17:11 AM
the beginning. The guitar sounds great. You're voice reminds me a little
of layne stayley (is that right?) from Alice in chains. I like the mood of this
song, very somber. Well done! [ Reply to This ]

Hope you're not tired of the Alice In Chains comments, but it's almost like
hearing new stuff from them. I like everything about it. This song is what
this site is all about! Very creative with excellent use of the software
mixed with solid musicianship. More, please! [ Reply to This ]
