Description:
Should I apologise for this? This is the FOURTH version of this song I've uploaded.

But for several reasons:

1/. The last version produced some useful crits from Epileptic Gibbon, Drakonis, atwood1956, Mystified, bronco and Mungo. Thanks...

2/. Rebsie wanted to sing it again - and the results are, I think you'll agree, really really wonderful.

3/. I asked failteband to collaborate and he's added some truly great tracks... Big thanks, Stephen.

This song is performed by Rebsie, atwood1956, stevel and failteband. A pretty incredible cast list; I owe... I owe...

Lyrics:
If you give me some money
I'll sing you a song
Do you think that I do this for free?
but you better be fast
cause I'm watching the glass
And the water is rising round me

The captain is drunk
and the crew have all jumped ship
the compass aint working no more.
I'm here on the deck
of this smouldering wreck
I'm looking for signs of a shore

Some people are lucky
some people are not.
Can you gu ess which of these I might be?
But don\'t waste my time
I\'m not sure I can swim
and the water\'s still rising round me

I wish someone knew
where we are, all I know is
I\'m not where I wanted to be.
I\'m keepig my eyes on the distant horizon
but I can\'t see nothing but sea

If you give me some money
I'll sing you a song
Do you think that I do this for free?
But you better be fast
get up off your arse
cause the water is rising round me

Hardware:
Rebsie: microphone
Me: mandolin, electric guitar, violin, tin whistle, bodhran and software tracks
atwood1956: synthesizer
stevel: stratocasters
failteband: "D" tin whistle; and low "D" tin whistle, bodhran - brushed and beaten.

Another great version &mdash 05/28/05 - 04:10:21 PM
Wow - this song keeps developing...the tin whistle sounds
great. Rebsie's vocals sound more confident and upfront
on this version. Very nice production.

Well, you've done it! &mdash 05/28/05 - 04:54:06 PM
Yep, you've certainly improved upon the previous
version. I too love the addition of the tin whistle
(though I'm not entirely convinced by what else is
going on in the song at the point that the tin whistle
is playing – does anyone else agree? I can't put my
finger on what the problem is but it doesn't sound
quite right to me. But don't feel you have to record
yet another version!). Rebsie's vocals are typically
wonderful but they are also a step up from those of
the earlier version. I'm glad you found my earlier
criticism useful … if nothing else it's led you to
produce a generally superior version of an already
outstanding song. Sorted! Let's do the funky moped!

vox are fab :)

Congrats to all involved. Excellent!

Better yet &mdash 05/29/05 - 01:57:02 AM
No need to apologise for giving us and even better version of
this song. Part of why we're all here is to improve and to
help each other. I love hearing this develope.

The instrumental additions and new vocals are wonderful.
Some parts of the vocals have a strange cadence that kind of
throws me off at times.

If you continue to work on this song I'd love to participate in
any way, even if only some tiny bit; I'd just like the honor of
wading in the rising water with you guys.

startling &mdash 05/29/05 - 05:02:39 AM
This has be a strong contender for best collab ever.

The production on this sounds HUGE, my 15 'phones are sounding like they cost 300 quid.

Well done to you all.

Bravo &mdash 05/29/05 - 05:32:22 AM
Almost perfect. Now where's the heavy metal guitar solo
on the fade?
Kidding aside, I enjoy this version best of all. Rebsie's
vocals are more upfront, the remainder of the mix more
integrated and level. Performance-wise, I'd like to give
each of you a round of applause.

Like the chorus especially, like those strings sounds in the
backround. The backround sounds lush.

Nice singin

This is amazing! What an amazing collab! Rebsie's singing
is, as always, mesmerizing. I absolutely adore the musical
bed on this one, especially the tin whistles. As the others
have said, this one had amazing depth. Bravo, all of you!

Very cool &mdash 05/29/05 - 09:13:50 AM
This is my first listen.

Very juicy. A wonderful song. I especially like the F#minor
to Gminor hook. Groovy.

There are some timing issues but overall a pleasure to
listen to.

Early Bowie &mdash 05/29/05 - 02:54:28 PM
For some reason this reminds me of early David Bowie, circa Hunky dory.

I can't offer much higher praise than that.

Thanks for reminding me I have a tin whistle around here somewhere, too!

I like the whistles. Love the song. You two are a very
enjoyable duo. Very glad you are posting here, and again,
I was happy to contribute my two pence. Or hay penny.
Whatever.

Jeez...Rebsie - you did an amazing job with the vocals - I really liked this. The music overall is amazing and I think you did a great job. Who wrote the lyrics? I like them...

Rebsie - your getting better with vocals, and it must be attested to you practicing and mysti's excersizes. I really did feel like I was at sea...great feeling for this song! Keep up the good work..

Man Overboard! &mdash 06/03/05 - 06:08:35 PM
Thanks ThatNation, I appreciate your nice remarks about my voice. It has
improved a lot thanks to Mysti's online voice coaching. Actually though, I
recorded this new vocal before I started doing the breathing exercises,
only a week or so after the previous one was posted. The huge
improvement in my voice is down to the confidence boost I got when I
started working with Mando.

He wrote the lyrics too. Good, aren't they?

beautiful voice! &mdash 05/29/05 - 10:33:23 PM
But the feeling whose arrangement of voice is weak doe.
A little if it becomes clear, it is perfect!
When it tries fumbling comp¶metric EQ a little, how
probably will be?

I am having such a fabulous time here - it's a fine
community. People here are both open-minded and
incredibly generous with their time - listening to so many
versions of a song. But you can relax now. I think this is as
far as Rebsie and I intend to take this one I think.

Not necessarily like-minded musically, but incredibly
open-minded; and also generous enough with their time
to give songs repeated listens.

wow &mdash 06/01/05 - 05:42:39 AM
this has been very nicely improved. I love all the genuine
sound effects. Rebsie's voice floats in nicely at the start. I
can so imagine being on a ship hundreds of years ago
when listening to this. Great mandolin playing as usual
and the tin whistle is spot on.

very visual! &mdash 06/03/05 - 05:45:26 PM
WOW! I love this! I felt like I was watching some sort of
movie about the sea while listening to this music, with
very vivid images brought forth by this compelling array
of sounds.

Excellent combination of instruments, truly a folk flavor.
I am amazed at all the different elements brought
together in this recording.

The only sound which didn't fit quite as well in the mix, to
my ears anyway, was the high synth strings. Everything
else sounded more "organic"....I don't know what to
suggest to change, exactly, but perhaps a slight lowering
of the string level would do it. Or maybe bring the live
fiddle back in.

It's always a great challenge to blend live and synthed
instruments. But this is a small thing in view of an
extremely well done track. I enjoyed listening to this a lot.

CONGRATULATIONS TO *ALL* OF YOU!!!

mandolin, layered whistles and concept is stellar &mdash 06/30/05 - 01:21:44 PM
Such a wonderful song. These are great folk writing and
storytelling lyrics, and your audio concept is on the right
track. The seagull and Irish whistles are such a great
opening; mandolin is stellar and layered whistles
throughout are top notch. I think Rebsie's vocals sound
like they are too low in her range, and there are still notes
a tad out of tune, but maybe changing the key at this late
date is not an option? Also, one of the later chorus seems
out of sync, vocals behind the rhythm bed. But the overall
effect is so warm and pleasant, reminding the listener of
the analogy going on in the superb lyrics.
