Description:
This lady butterfly is bringing her friend into a dream of a lifetime.
Open D Tuning for both the fingerpicking and the lead. I recently did a backround piece of Dadai and though I would keep at that tuning and try to do a instrumental based on the D tuning. I have been really inspired to work with the slide since Gregg Allman came by my house to date my tenant at the time.
Gregg (Allman Bros. fame) played a guitar I made and invited me to his house. He wanted to go over some of my songs, but I had not heard from him since. But it was cool to talk with him for the first time in front of my house, giving him a tape through
his Corvette open door window.
Hardware:
2 mics
8 track Eurorack Mx 1602a

Another masterclass in fingerpicking that truly
captures the subject. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks
The miracles of graphic software. I find it more motivating for me to try to
make the picture fit the tune. I can't always do that, but it is sure nice to have
that picture available to make the tune have more character. It least I hope so.

thoughts from the bull... &mdash 06/01/05 - 02:26:34 PM
i've mentioned it before... i'm a sucker for slide guitar.
when it's done well, i'm caught up in it.
to be honest, and i don't mean to compare, this reminds
me of some of the stuff i was doing back when i recorded
on a TASCAM 424 4-track tape unit... only much, much
better and more polished.
you've painted a wonderful landscape of sound and placed
a very competent lead character to take the stage. the
slide, being the lead, sings freely and loosely and the
song never once touches ground or feels formulaic.
great job! in fact, i'm looking at my glass and my steel
slides right now with a look of mild intent.
thanks for sharing, thetiler!! beautiful. [ Reply to This ]

To: Boris the Bull
I remember those types of tape decks.
I had an Akai 4 track. GB is so much easier isn't it. Wow, the wonders of the
modern age.
Thanks for your great post, thanks for the compliment about maybe I
influenced you to play that slide again :)
Good luck

Winged wonder &mdash 06/01/05 - 02:57:53 PM
Your butterfly pitches, rolls, floats and cascades gently,
effortlessly. An excellent acoustic outing. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks Richard, I wish I could be talented enough to make an animation video
that would make the buterfuly move to the sounds of this tune. But just don't
have that skill, drat.

it is a little more of a challenge working with open tunings, but sometimes doing
something different has it's fun.

Hey Tiler. I've always loved your fingerpicking, but I like
the addition of the slide! Your sound is so clear. Whatever
mic and recording method you are using works very well! [ Reply to This ]

Sorry my recording technique wasn't quite up to par on my earlier stuff. But it is
fun learning and getting more familiar with my two mics and the little 8 track
mixer that I bought years back.

Let Your Fingers Do The Walking &mdash 06/01/05 - 04:22:46 PM
Sounds like your fingers are running all over the neck on
this one. Liked the part have the descending melody
complete with drone string to tie it together. Open tuning?
Nice clean slide sound. [ Reply to This ]

Bright, vintage tiler &mdash 06/01/05 - 05:39:41 PM
I am glad you are using the 8-track. It is giving you a very
clean, bright recording. This is a lovely piece, Bill. Full of
the sounds of frets and slides and fingers picking. Perfect. [ Reply to This ]
I'm running out of superlatives &mdash 06/01/05 - 09:49:52 PM
for your tunes.
I kinda heard the fingerpicking as the female voice urging
the male to follow her into the dreamlands of the forest.
He's reluctant, of course, expressing his concern of the
unknown in a series of slide phrases. But she dissuades
his fears with a calmng refrain, finally dissmissing them
completely with a harmonic and he follows . . .
Oh, I'm an old Akai guy too. There's a 4000DB sitting on
the desk behind me but it hasn't got much use either
since GB came along. [ Reply to This ]
Well Tiler... &mdash 06/01/05 - 11:26:15 PM
Maybe you're up for playing it live one more time eh?
Oh...and for the record...My Tascam 4 track still graces the
shelf above my PowerBook G4...fully functional. Many a great
moment captured there.

Thanks Dadai, especially for getting me to do that D tuning on your tune. It
allowed me to explore and put in some stuff to this tune.

I am very sorry that it took me so long to stop by your place. I think it's uncool to not return one's efforts in gestures to be supportive and think that if it doesn't happen, so'em stuppid is goin on...
This is a beautiful piece. It's simply wonderful...(wonderful: an adjactive I've never used anywhere in my life before). Truly music to my ears. Thanks for the willingness to share T. Very nice picking.

lovely pickin' &mdash 06/03/05 - 11:14:59 AM
You make the guitar sound very rich and full with your
intricate arpeggiated pickin's. The open D tuning is very
effective here. (I occasionally use the same technique in
my harp playing.) I have always found the key of D to be a
"happy" key, and that's the way this song makes me feel.
The middle section offers a nice contrast with the
harmonic variation -- good departure, then back to the
earlier themes. Nice song construction! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks Cameron, have no seen you around, maybe your touring. I think you
belong to an orchestra?
Ya, D tuning is interesting, especially a nice vacation from the standard E tuning.
Thanks for the encouragement about the song structure!
