Description:
This track was included in Soulplay's 2002 debut cd "Urban Mellow"
I liked it because it was raw!
All acoustic guitars, strings that
were later mixed down low. And
no effects ! I dropped my pick while doing the guitar solo, just
kept it in because it sounds raw !
Most fun i've had making a song.

Great song and superb performance. The raw production
sound works for me, giving it a live performance feel. But
the mix has some issues: 1. The volume of the different
vocal tracks is kind of all over the place. Some are just
right, some are really too loud, and in a couple of places
they are very quiet. It's good to seperate the parts with
volume but I think in this mix it's too drastic a difference.
2. There's a synth that I hear come in a couple of times
including at the very end, and it it so quiet that it almost
sounds like it's just barely bleeding in from a stereo in
another room or even from headphones near the mic. It
either should be brought up to a level where it sounds
intentional or it should be entirely cut out. There was also
a record-scratching sound at one point that seemed out
of character for the song; it, too, was so quiet that it
almost sounded like something accidentally caught on
tape. Personally, I'd just cut out the scratch because it
just seems out of place in this song.
That said, this is a great song and it does sound like you
enjoyed performing it. I always dig listening to your

As always, very keen!
The strings were mixed way down because it
gave the track "production value" i didn't want that.
The recording was done with no effects, so the
lead vocals would "pop out" from time to time.
The scratch was something i should have turned
up in the mix. But after listening it did feel out of
place to me as well ( A MISTAKE ON MY PART).
This track is on "Soulplay" cd titled "Urban Mellow.
It's been out over 3 years, has done well also.
Back to the scratch. I hear some country music
(Big and Rich, and others) artist incorporating the
scratch sound. So thanks peter for the insight.
You " really " listen, i like that!

...'cause I'd probably appreciate your singing if you were
singing the phonebook...
So let's see if I can get objective:
I love the tune and I love the singing and I love the feel,
and when the feel's right I'm forgiving about almost
anything...
It reminds me of some live Ben Harper a friend gave to
me...laid back groove and impassioned vocal that slides in
over the top of it...
I am picky about acoustic guitars, and so if I'm going to
cite anything that I'd go back to, it would be the tone of
the guitar(s). A little bright to my taste--were you going
direct or is it all through the SM-57?--lotta bronze and
not as much wood as I like to hear...If it was me I'd get the
richest, clearest acoustic tone I could and triple track it,
panned left, right and center, and then the best upright
bass playing friend I had to lay a woody bass line down
the middle...not too many notes and lots of funk...
And in my listen some of the strings seem to pull sharp a
bit, which distracts me...
But gosh, Cecil, there's a REASON that when I see your
logo affixed to something, I go listen...

That was some good stuff ! Thanks.
I recorded everything right in the board.
I tend to like the metal sound of strings.
But that "wood" sound is nice too.
I didn't set up anything special, i just hit record
and started tracking. The results weren't bad so
i used a version on the cd i mention earlier.
This track was just me having some fun until
some ideas start rolling around in my head.
So thanks again and "always" give me your
honest opinions, because i value them.
