Description:
This is a "jam" McBoy and I did last summer as a tribute to the late "Jaco Pastorius" (of Weather Report and Joni Mitchell fame). His server crashed, and the song got lost from his list. I hope he can fill in the details for the other players. McBoy played the keys, two studio percussionists assisted. I wrote, pencilled the bass, arranged and mixed the tune.

Hardware:
Macs

Software:
GarageBand

A fitting tribute &mdash 06/14/05 - 10:06:25 PM
I think Jaco would be pleased. I'm going to have to dig out
Black Market and Heavy Weather now.
nice job guys.

Thanks, Snow! I wish everyone would listen to at least one Weather Report
album in their lifetime!

Cool, groovin'... &mdash 06/14/05 - 10:16:03 PM
...the talent in this place is, to say the least, impressive!
This is a great collaboration. Played with talent and
feeling.

Thanks for reposting this! :)

Thanks, Mysti. I have a lot of Jaco stuff to share with you... if you are
interested?

A little warped &mdash 06/14/05 - 11:43:13 PM
This is pretty cool. Some of the synth a keyboard sounds
kind of rub me the wrong way, but the riffs are great. The
the occasional warbling and bending notes lend a sense of
drunkeness, especially in the bass. Great rhythm
moments. Are those live players? Ugh! Yeah, some of
those synth sounds could be replaced! The refrain is
surprisingly straight foward knowing the two of you and
in comparison to some of the other details in the piece. I
don't know Pastorius, but I assume his work is the
inspiration for the style? I find this sort of curious, like
jazz on too much allegy medicine!

A little warped &mdash 06/15/05 - 02:47:56 PM
Thanks for listening and commenting, Chik. I would like to share my library
of Pastorius' fretless bass compositions. He lent a unique sound to an entire
decade of music... and beyond. Besides Weather Report, his playing on Joni's
albums "Hegira" and "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter".

The synth and keyboard sounds are an attempt to preserve the aural quality
that Jaco, and Joe Zawinal projected. The occasional warbling and bending
notes lend a sense of drunkeness for sure, especially in the bass.

Everything BUT the bass is live playing. The synth sounds were neccessary,
although dated. Jaco's style is definitely the inspiration for the piece. Jazz on
too much allegy medicine! I can dig that!

Very Good Tribute &mdash 06/15/05 - 02:58:21 AM
Good integration of midi and real instruments. The tune is
nice, you've captured Jaco's sound (although the playing here
is more restrained than what I would normally associate with
Jaco, you've captured his tone and snakey feel). The synth
sounds, although they might sound a little 'cheesy' to our
ears nowadays, an a pretty accurate reflection of the synth
sounds of that era. Very well done, Alimar and McBoy.
P.S. I'm more of an Alphonso Johnson fan. The bass line to
Cucumber Slumber is one of my favorites.

Very Good Tribute &mdash 06/15/05 - 03:09:59 PM
Thanks for taking the time and commenting, Mungo. I still "dig" those cheesy
synth sounds. They were "ethereal" back when... and way ahead of their time.

Birdland... &mdash 06/15/05 - 07:19:18 AM
I always liked Weather Report - actually because of Joe
Zawinul's extroardinry writing; and this has a flavour of
that too. Congratulations.

comment button broken so i'll butt in here. you captured the weather report sound just missing the warm tones of vinyl(but that's another issue). would love to know more about the live recording part. the mic-ing on the drums/percussion was so good i thought they were GB.
more huge talent to listen to on MJ. i gotta get a grant.
good job guys.

JOAN, thanks for posting even with a broke button. Glad you like this, we tred
our best to capture the weather report sound. Thanks to McBoy's keys and
synths, I think we accomplished what we set out to do. McBoy would be the
one to tell you about the drummer, and conga player. They are friends of
his... I've never met them!

Cool jam... &mdash 06/15/05 - 11:58:59 AM
you two do a fine job on this one. Mellow jazz, just like
I like it.

Excellent &mdash 06/15/05 - 12:02:34 PM
Complex, clever, and brilliantly played and
constructed ... I love the way it changes gear as it
moves from one section to another.

This is really first rate - much credit to you both.

still great &mdash 06/15/05 - 01:33:17 PM
Thanks for the "heads-up" on the reissuing of this tune,
Alimar! It was one of my favorites when it was submitted a
year ago. I'm glad that it's back here again.

Very nice combination of keyboards, percussion and bass.
Good mix and production.

I like the alternating swing and faster driving sections of
this piece, which keeps the interest high.

The two of you create a mellow, yet stimulating
atmosphere on this jazz track.

One of my favs &mdash 06/17/05 - 09:28:17 PM
This tune was one of my very first listens when I signed on here at Macjams in August of last year. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard this tune, thinking, "These guys did this with Garageband? WOW!" Especially that bass. WOW! You captured essence of Jaco's (and Joe Zawinul's) playing. This is a great work in my book.

nice &mdash 06/21/05 - 05:48:46 PM
Like that bass sound, the bass works very well with the
synth. Love that funky climbing bass. Nice percussion.

Like that Jazzy drums latter on and the changing of the
beat.

Weather Report &mdash 06/29/05 - 02:13:15 PM
I've seen Weather Report mentioned around here quite a bit and thought I should probably check them out. Your song makes me want to even more.

I really enjoy the mixture of instruments, ones you don't often hear together, which is very cool. The production on this is also superb.

I sure enjoyed this &mdash 06/30/05 - 10:44:29 PM
Great piece of work. I'm glad to know someone besides me appreciates Pastorious enough to write like or for him. I enjoyed this very much.

Somebody pinch me &mdash 07/07/05 - 12:57:10 AM
My absolute all time fav drummer, Peter Erskin was a part
of the Weather report troop. I sound dumb when I say this
before saying anything else, but here goes - Nice drum
and percussion work. If it's not right it's hard for me to
hang around and listen. I'm so impressed... and the
BASS and PIANO! I guess you had to be there... It's not
possible to pull this out of gb is it? haaaaaaa... I'm
inspired.

I know you're not supposed to do this but 10/9/8/9

Need a more Jaco-like bass line. Otherwise has that certain feel from
Pans era...
