Description:
I learnt this baby from some friends of a fiance a million years ago - i've never seen the words written down and one new verse was taught to me recently at Bromyard Folk Festival. Enjoy! It doesn't get much more British than this! x

Lyrics:
Sailing over the Dogger Bank – now wasn’t it a treat
The wind was blowing east north east – we had to give a sheet
You should’ve seen us rally – the winds ablowin’ free
On a passage from the Dogger Bank to great Grimsby

So watcha twigger she’s a proper jubby-jew
Give ‘er the sheet and let her rip with the boys to see ya’ thru
You should’ve seen us rally – the winds ablowin’ free
On a passage from the Dogger Bank to great Grimsby

The captain he’s a shagger of sheep and he loves a drop of good ale.
The first mate’s got a rope on his neck, he’s been seen in many a jail
The third mate is a bush ranger – he comes from the African Isle.
And take a look at the poor old cook coz it gets the bugger wild.

We are the boys who make a noise when we come home from sea.
We are the boys who make a noise, we have a jubilee.
We roam the town from pub to pub, we stagger from door to door
And when our money is all spent – we go to sea for more.

So watcha twigger as down the street she came.
Her high heels, her painted toes, Virginia’s on the game.
She is one of them flash girls, Gawd she cuts a shine.
She can do a double shuffle on the knickerbocker line!

So watcha twigger she’s a proper jubby-jew
Give ‘er the sheet and let her rip with the boys to see ya’ thru
You should’ve seen us rally – the winds ablowin’ free
On a passage from the Dogger Bank to great Grimsby

I'd love to know what a double shuffle... &mdash 06/15/05 - 08:43:22 AM
... on the kickerbocker line is. Or, on second thoughts, maybe I shouldn't enquire too closely. Great fun. Bawdy, old fashioned, salty smut delivered with great zest. Wonderful.

Enjoyably folksy &mdash 06/15/05 - 09:20:19 AM
And I wished to hear a pennywhistle in the background,
and then partway into the song I could swear it was there
playing along as a ghostly disembodied harmony. Loved
the delivery, very fun!

rendition of the Dogger Bank one will not hear unless
they find their way to to a pub where the sailors hang
out and the ships set sail.
I enjoyed this very much.

I'm glad I got to meet you today! Welcome to MacJams!
Even though you've been a member for a few months... it's
about time you posted a few tunes. It's got to be so
difficult to sing like that! Any lawn mower friend of Rebs,
is a friend of mine!

... some translating software. There's something
wonderful about hearing a song in a language with which I
think I have a passing famliarity, and yet not
understanding half of it. Loved your harmonies and
enthusiasm!

joanna - weigh heigh me hearties - we seafarin' folk have our own language! i don't understand much of it either - although i do believe that "giving a sheet" refers to a sail! As for the sheep - i couldn't possibly say! Thanks for your appreciation - and our new-found friendship! xx

I think you'll find that sheet means what we landlubbers call rope. Sheep is
what sailors... oh, never mind.

There's still so much we barbarian yanks need to learn about about proper use of The Queen's English.
Great tune. Well sung.

Watcha twigger! &mdash 07/15/05 - 03:47:06 PM
I love you for posting this. It's so full of fun and soul and energy. You do great things with traditional music, Caroline and I hope there's lots more to come.

I googled a litttle bit about this song and found various versions of the lyrics, none as bawdy and energetic as yours. Apparently, some people have a slightly different opinion of the captain, but I'm willing to bet yours is right.

You give me no choice but to add myself to the "Caroline's fans list." It's that or walk the plank, right?

watcha! you do keep popping up in the most unexpected places - i left the snacks somewhere else - now i suppose i have to go and fetch some sea biscuits or some such - wait until i get back - english muffins as well i think, cucumber sandwiches and a cup of earl grey - yum - oh yes, and thankyee for thy appreciation of my ditty! x

Aye, and I have a few as well . . . &mdash 08/26/05 - 04:48:55 AM
Yes, this is the type of English folk music that I have
collected for many years. Tho I have not heard this one
before, I have many more that are even saltier (hehe, and I
am sure you do as well!).

I really enjoyed that you were able to be free to do this
accapella as well as the rejoindered duet. It gave the song
greater dimension than it would have had were you to do
it alone. Your voice is rather good really. It has a good
strength as well as a bit of chemistry to it. A great voice
for light theater.

What you have done for me is to give me the notion that I
can do about anything here without it having to be my
own original work. So, I may do a cover for my first entry
here.

Biographical. &mdash 06/11/07 - 02:17:01 AM
This sounds like it was written about my friends who have had more adventure in the navy than I. When you sang this your notes weren't terribly accurate, but the off-notes somehow worked well for this song. You sing great harmony with yourself.
