I like serious music that's playful. (Why do you think they call it "playing"
music?) Two of my favorite jazz player/composers are funny as hell:
Thelonous Monk and Carla Bley. Thanks for listening.

Very fun... not just a cute use of nature sounds to spice
things up, but a very well-crafted tune & score, and great
clarinet playing too (that from a 3rd chair high school
clarinettist, uh, many years ago!) Loved it! Reminds me a
little of the anthropologist who took his tons of field
recordings of animals, and loaded them into his synth and
made a bunch of pop songs with them... "Bernie Krause
and the Human Remains". Made me smirk!

Have you ever traded 8s with an alligator before? Very
well-constructed piece, Bill. I like how you take off in the
last half. You almost get serious. Almost.
Sounds like your bad finger is better?

glad to send this to the Weekly Picks, or Rating Picks, or whatever it's called
these days...

Finger better now. I wore the splint for 7 weeks and made the
background parts then. When I finally tried to add the clarinet I
found that there were way too many animal sounds, so I had to remove
about half of them. (The animal sounds were downloaded from the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service and are not under copyright.)

This is the kind of music which would be perfect to play
on the zoo train, making its way through the wildlife
section, rattling along the tracks, watching the animals in
their "natural" artificial habitats.
Your clarinet playing has a great sense of humor. This
piece has a nice improvisatory feel to it.
Good percussion, nice pacing and alternation of sounds.
Something about the animal sound effects reminds me of
PeeWee's Playhouse! (grin)

Wow! Great animal sounds and last night I saw Eric Burdon
on TV. Talk about synchronicity! Loved it. Great fun,
beautiful clarinet tone and phrasing. Doesn't get much
better than this.

This is really groovy. Good clarinet playing, and all the sounds fit really nicely.

This reminds me of a Sim City type of song. Real Smooth.

Whatever made you think of a background of wildlife?
Great fun listening! Smooth, glassy clarinet sound. Buddy
DeFranco would be proud of you.

I recorded the 17-year cicadas when they were making a racket here in
Northern Virginia last year and made a song with them. (See "Brood X"
on homepage.mac.com/bbarner) I wanted to try another song with
nature sounds and searched the Internet for sounds to download.
Interesting you say "glassy" tone. I use a clear, glass Vandoren
mouthpiece.

wow
never heard anything like, I remember there was a tune in
the 50's that had jungle sounds and it became a hit. Maybe
that inspired you. Can't remember the name of it. I enjoyed
this.

I'll bet you're thinking of "Quiet Village" by Martin Denny.
