Description:
THE FINAL MIXED AND MASTERED VERSION OF THIS TRACK IS AVAILABLE ON MY DEBUT ALBUM, "SOMETHING".
http://www.simig.com/records/artists/peter/peter.htm
THIS VERSION IS CLOSE TO FINAL BUT NOT THE FINAL. ACTUALLY QUITE A FEW FIXES AND ADJUSTMENTS WERE MADE SINCE THIS VERSION.
I had sent the track to a pro in Germany for mastering (to try it out) but was so dissapointed in the muddy, muffled results that I decided to just hunker down and do it myself.
While I was at it I reperformed the vocals to improve the recording quality, changed the drums in the mid section. I did a ton of work on the mixing and mastering. The difference between this and the previous version is huge.
Let me know what you think. I'll leave the previous version up so you can compare.
Lyrics:
The faintest breath of air
the lightest touch of pain
All the senses we endure
the price is all the same
One might take hope as a lover
and spite all the others
take death for a mother
One life couldn't get much better
One life is a tragedy
But both lives are always together
They dance on forever
no matter the weather
(instrumental break)
One life couldn't get much better
One life is a tragedy
But both lives are always together
They dance on forever
no matter the weather
Hardware:
G5 2.5x2, Taylor acoustic guit., Westbury electric guit., bambu flute, Audio Technica MB4000C mic, Line 6 POD, M-Audio Quattro USB

Comparison &mdash 06/23/05 - 04:37:25 PM
I like the vocals in this better. The instrument separation is
more pronounce / cleaner in this to my ears (ditto vocals in
that regard).
The song itself and your singing are excellent, Peter. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks, Mungo. And thanks for commenting again after I had to repost to fix
an error. [ Reply to This ]
nice work &mdash 06/23/05 - 05:33:36 PM
the added depth really shows in this version, & it's a good
thing because the soundstage is just splitting with content-
pretty remarkable. i really enjoyed how the parts & pieces
flow into, & compliment one another. compared to the last
tune, it seems some of the lowest notes have been scrubbed
in the name of cleanliness. i kind of miss it, but there is so
much more now to sink your ears into. really great song, fills
out even better played in itunes [ Reply to This ]
nice work &mdash 06/23/05 - 07:00:41 PM
Thanks for the feedback, _nder. Yeah, I pulled back a little on the bass so that it
would be just right when played in iTunes, a stereo, or any other player with
standard EQ settings. [ Reply to This ]
Uh-huh! &mdash 06/23/05 - 06:52:46 PM
There is something so much warmer sounding about this
edition. Vocals seem much richer- guitars seem more
seperated. An excellent version of a terrific song. Still love
the screams! [ Reply to This ]

Great Layers &mdash 06/23/05 - 07:34:47 PM
Nicely crafted tune with lots of interesting stuff to absorb.
I love the leslie-ish sound that's in there, all the slide
stuff. Great!
As far as production, for the most part it was pretty much
there. I thought, though the vocals were well in the mix
that they needed a bit more presence... and my only other
nitpik would be that the acoustic was a little thin... it
sounded like you used the pickups rather than mic'ing it.
The electric guitar sounds were fabulous!
Keep up the great work pete!

Great Layers &mdash 06/25/05 - 01:09:46 AM
Thanks for the feedback, DC. You're right about the vocals. For the second
time in a day I screwed up when I exported the song and posted it at MJ; I
somehow managed to export it with the 2nd lead vocal track (the phased
double) muted. I just want to kick myself in the head for not catching that
before it got reposted on MJ.
You can hear the correct version on my MacIdol page where we are free to
swap out our files as many times as we like.

Better! &mdash 06/24/05 - 02:47:30 AM
Vocals come through "much better." Builds up real solid
to the end. I recommend tight underwear for the end
vocals.....
Nice punchy snare sound that kicks through the mix.
could have stood a tad more bass on my end but it leaves
more headroom and can be eq'd.
I hope they get MJ2 going so we can redo stuff as you
said.
I enjoyed both versions! [ Reply to This ]
Better! &mdash 06/25/05 - 01:17:12 AM
Thanks, saxking. Yeah I wish we could just swap out these files when we have a
new version, especially when it's just a minor but important fix. [ Reply to This ]

Woo &mdash 06/25/05 - 01:24:46 AM
Grazie, Slimmie. As I told Rebsie in a reply to her comment on my "Last
Migration" piece, I found in arranging tracks for my CD that there is an order
that the tracks can be put in that makes them actually flow together, from the
first track, "Schrodinger's Cat", to the last track, "The Last Migration". [ Reply to This ]
Unique &mdash 06/25/05 - 07:30:01 AM
Not really all that surprised that a "pro" shop had trouble
mixing this one PG. It's different (a very good thing) and
doesn't fit neatly into any sound model that's come
before. With most songs, a comment of "reminds me of
so-and-so" is appropriate but this one doesn't. In that
respect, your instincts to mix yourself are probably
serving you well. I did, however, get a brief mental image
of some guy a long time ago mixing something he called
"Pet Sounds."
Sounds done to me. Good job. [ Reply to This ]
Unique &mdash 06/25/05 - 01:28:25 PM
Thanks, Snowdragon. When you put it that way I guess it makes sense. I heard
before-and-after samples of the guy's mastering work and that stuff sounded
great. I guess he just wasn't used to working with my sound. [ Reply to This ]
Awesome &mdash 06/25/05 - 12:50:49 PM
This is such a cool version. I've always loved this tune. It's a song I sing to in the car on my way over to play music with some band friends. It always gets me really stoked up. (of course of I don't have the 8-octave range that you have) Great tune! Love it!
You don't mind if I cover this do you? [ Reply to This ]
Awesome &mdash 06/25/05 - 08:31:18 PM
Thanks, Tom. I'm glad you dig the song so much. It feels good to know that my
music can get people such as yourself jazzed up. Hey, I guess if you are playing
music somewhere and you want to cover the song that's cool with me. Just give
me credit. ;-) [ Reply to This ]

do it for me. I'm sure they are good in the view of an
actual musician. lol. good job. like those drums by the

Your spirit soars around me &mdash 06/27/05 - 11:08:44 AM
Peter, I love your voice and sound so much. Consider
posting a definitive version on MJ instead of bouncing
listeners to MacIdol? I'm sure we'd all re-comment on your
new page! You fill the room with freshness and spirit. [ Reply to This ]
Your spirit soars around me &mdash 07/01/05 - 03:57:38 PM
Thanks, Tobin. I'd love to be able to update the song without having to make a
new submission (yet again). I just don't want to diffuse my list of music with yet
another version that has only a small (though important) fix. I want to keep the
comments from the past version but that means keeping multiple versions of my
songs up and it clutters my list of tracks. I keep waiting for MJ to implement the
"VersionTracker.com" method that is supposedly in the works. [ Reply to This ]
SO much talent! &mdash 06/27/05 - 04:42:55 PM
This is a very well-balanced tune, between interesting
vocals, guitars and drums. It has a polished, professional
sound -- congrats on doing this YOURSELF! It turned out
fine, I think.
I like the shimmering, repeated fast-note guitar lick which
repeats over and over -- very cool. It almost sounds like
the rise and fall of cicadas on a hot summer day (which
this definitely *IS*!).
The mix as a whole is very rich and full.
I am very impressed with your wide range of talents. Not
only do you have a great voice, guitar skills and mixing
abilities, you are also an excellent symphonic composer.
My hat's off to you.
P.S. Fascinating song art! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks, Cameron. The song art is a photo I took from a plane as we were
approaching Milan, Italy. I enhanced the colors. [ Reply to This ]
Slide slid &mdash 06/30/05 - 05:44:21 PM
The slide slid very nicely, and dare I say it, slidily.
What an eclectic fellow you are - I have three of your songs on iTunes now, and they all sound like different artists. All good, I might add. [ Reply to This ]
Great tune &mdash 07/01/05 - 01:35:38 AM
Gabriel crying &mdash 07/13/05 - 08:14:22 AM
This is a radio ready track, yet with sounds not usually aired
on radio, with pain and pleasure mixed up in such a poetic
way, most things being left unsaid, yet cry out in a Peter
Gabriel gut way. Your voice may be my favorite I've heard in
years. Very distinct. [ Reply to This ]
breath of fresh air &mdash 08/13/05 - 10:54:24 AM
great lyrics...you have a very unique and original voice...the chorus part is great...it's freshing to hear you explore various facets/perspectives of life, as well as other subjects like quantum physics in Schrodinger's Cat, with music and song-writing...your lyrics are always thought-provoking, creative and entertaining...hey, sorry if i was a bit pushy in my comments on the song "The Pain Game"...i didn't mean to impose that the song necessarily reflected your personal thoughts; you can and do explore a multitude of topics and perspectives, to which i say thanks and rock on [ Reply to This ]
breath of fresh air &mdash 08/13/05 - 11:25:09 AM
Thanks, Mikki. Don't worry about the comment you made about the meaning of
the other song. I wasn't offended or anything like that. I just wanted to clarify
that it was meant to represent a specific relationship or type of relationship
rather than general commentary. I really like it when people comment about
their take on the meaning in my songs. [ Reply to This ]
Cool Man! &mdash 08/27/05 - 06:59:41 AM
I love the slide guitar and all the layering in the background.
It provides a very nice canvas on which to paint your lyrics. I
will check out more of your tracks. [ Reply to This ]
