Description:
One of my favourite tunes as a kid.
One day, on the chat line, Bronco and I discovered a mutual fondness for Roger McGuinn. Bronco suggested I visit McGuinn's most excellent website: http://www.ibiblio.org/jimmy/folkden/php/search/ which features many folksongs he's collected, complete with words, chords and a version of him doing the tune. So, naturally, when I found this one there, I had to ask Bronco to sit in. Then, we did what any good cowboy would do, we asked a Brit to join us.

snowdragon: 6- and 12-string guitar, bass, vocals, pencil tool, bentwood rocker
Bronco: 6-string guitar, "stratospheric" harmony vocals
mandoliquent: mandolin

Thanks a million guys

Lyrics:
Git Along Little Dogies
Traditional, with many thanks to Roger McGuinn

As I walked along one morning for pleasure
I spied a young cowboy a-ridin' along
His hat was pulled back and his spurs was a-janglin'
And as he approached he was singin' this song

Chorus:

Whoopee ti yi ay, git along little dogies
It's your misfortune and none of my own
Whoopee ti yi yo git along little dogies
For you know (that) Colorado (Wyoming, Montana, Alberta) will be your new home

Some boys goes up the trail for pleasure
But that's where you gets it most awfully wrong
You have no idea the trouble they gives us
As we go drivin' them dogies along

Your mama she was raised down in Texas
Where yellow roses and jimson weed grow
We'll fix you up on prickly pear and cholla
'Til you're ready for the trail to Idaho

I love this song too &mdash 06/25/05 - 04:00:33 PM
You guys did a great job with this. Snowdragon, great
cowboy singing! Love the harmonies with Bronco. Mando,
great licks! This is so much fun to listen to. Yeeee
hawww!

The tone of that short intro is a little of an odd match for
the song it goes into. Maybe drop the effects on that
guitar riff at the beginning, treat it dry. The heavy reverb
on the guitar solo on the right side at the beginning of the
last quarter seems inconsistent with the rest of the music;
I'd treat it the same as the other parts.

Those nits aside, this is a very nice production. I enjoyed
this a lot. A actually love that chair creeking sound at the
end.

Thanks PG, and I was hoping someone would pick up on the rocking chair.
And I probably did get a little carried away with the effects there. Easy thing
to do with GB. But I honestly do appreciate you mentioning it because I'd like
to do a couple more of these with Bronco and others and while part of the fun
is to produce more contemporary versions of these classics, we would do well
to keep in mind that there is a delicate balance to be maintained. Thanks
again.

that baby geetar of yours, Mando.

Well boys, ya keep this kind a' thing up and b'fer ya knows

some shut eye, tomorrow's gonna be a long one.

congrats to you snow, for roundin' up these partners of
yours and cranking out this fine tune.

Mysty, Thank you. Sure hope it meets with Dad's approval. And there are
several other tunes on McGuinn's website I'd like have a go at. Have to see if
Bronco's still speaking to me after everything I've put the poor guy through
on this one :) Both he and Mando deserve MVP awards for putting up with an
old Canuck's screwups. Thanks again.

Sounds like you guys... &mdash 06/27/05 - 10:22:29 AM
...had fun doing this one. Snow, love that pencil tool, huh?
your guitar playing and vocals are great. Bronco, kudos to
you, too, on your guitar and vocals. Mando, as usual, the
mandolin is superb! My only nit is the "hiss" at the end.
Not so much that the hiss is there, but that it appears to
be breaking up. But I do like the chair squeek!

Woo-hoo! &mdash 06/27/05 - 11:28:19 AM
Wow. What was fun to do. (What are "dogies" anyway?)

Here you go Mando:
dogie
noun {C} US
a calf
(= young cow) that has no mother

Let's do Old Paint next. It has hollihans, coulees, snuffy's, firey's,draws, and
dans. Yeehaw! Actually that is one of the things that I have enjoyed about
these old cowboy songs is the colorful, mysterious lanquage. It's like a whole
different world that you know nothing about but it sounds interesting.

I'm gobsmacked, as we say in the UK &mdash 07/02/05 - 06:02:46 AM
If I'm honest, cowboy songs are not my thing but this is
absolutely fantastic. I love it! Wonderful complulsive beat
and full of energy. There's some gorgeous guitar playing
in there. Lovely vocal too which suits the song perfectly.

And I know I'm somewhat biased ... but I luuuurve that
mandolin! William, you are so talented; you never cease to
amaze me.

Downloading this to go on my 'Pod.

Takes me back... &mdash 07/07/05 - 10:17:28 AM
Reminds me of my days riding the range. Wait a minute. I
never rode the range. Although I do have an electric one
in the kitchen, at which I am very profiecient.

Anyway, sorry I missed this fine rendition when it was
released, just now caught it from a link posted by
caroline, pointing to happy songs to relieve the burden of
this day in London.

Thanks cowpokes - and mando.

nice guitar work. i like the drums at the beginning. half way through i like how the instruments swirl around eachother a little in the solo. nice guitar playing. good country song with a somewhat jonny cash vocal style but more smooth and better.
