Description:
In 1984, a friend of mine and I recorded this piece in my living room. Michael was an acoustic purist...he had never before played with anyone who played electric instruments...I, of course, was an acoustic impurist...invading every aspect of our music with electricity. This was the first such recording we did together...the tape later bacame known as "First Chance at Strange".

Michael is playing his acoustic Martin and I am on the Strat using an E Bow. I resurected this piece...but didn't alter the original in any way. It is, just as it was recorded that day, transferred from casette tape to digital and converted to MP3.

Michael and I continued to play music for several years, recording dozens of hours of improvisational music live before he returned to the mountains of Vermont.

Sad solilquy... &mdash 06/29/05 - 01:54:11 PM
...now that you cannot play again with him. Interesting
sound field you have created here. There is a sadness to
this piece, sending me to ponder. Nice sound for being
from 1984.

Liquid Space Music &mdash 06/29/05 - 03:50:35 PM
Love that ethereal, squirmy, popping violin sound. Sounds
like a track from Hearts of Space radio show. Awesome.
Nothing wrong with this music. Try that in
GarageBand... not sure you can get the same liquid legato.

dark and foreboding. something is about to happen in the barnyard.

Say hi to George for me when you see him "Joan". Sucker for the ebow...I got
mine in 1980...still works great! Love that damn thing. You should here it on my
brothers electric hammer dulcimer (with dual humbuckers no less).

Thanks Joan!

great sound &mdash 06/29/05 - 05:04:16 PM
sorta reminds me of a sad, rainy interlude in a moody old
'70's movie.. or something. very cool feel, neat
experimentation. it would be interesting to play with some of
your older stuff mixed into something current. me likes

Chilly and lonely &mdash 06/30/05 - 06:29:38 AM
What a great sunday morning vibe this has. I love it.
What a contrast the two sounds make. Very hypnotic and lonely sounding instruments

1984, a good vintage &mdash 06/30/05 - 12:47:53 PM
I remember when 1984 was so bizarrely futuristic
sounding, just the name, becuz of the book, and it came a
went without world changing confrontations, except for
the invention of the Mac, something Orwell didn't forsee.
My second son was born; I heard Yes' 90125 and loved it;
I was living in a solar home in the middle of Wisconsin; life
was good. I think it was that year my eldest son (MJ
member twonicus) saw the other MJ (Michael Jackson) on
TV for the first time and was absolutely mesmerized (MTV
used to be mostly concert footage and I watch it late at
night while rocking my kids to sleep.) Your music
captures moments of solitude, open internal spaces, a
superb improvisation. Ever air this on Hearts of Space?

1984, a good vintage &mdash 07/05/05 - 10:39:56 AM
as it was for me as well. Musically a very creative time in my life. It was amazing
having the opportunity to play with Michael for a few years. We often played 3 or
4 times a week. Man, what I wouldn't give to have that opportunity again these
days. Looking forward to hearing the music with you and your son Tobin.
Appreciate the comments.

plus the ebow sounds unique, very creative. This is very
interesting stuff indeed.

Really love that new age dreamy acoustic guitar
fingerpicking!!!

Good job Blaine and Michael!

Nostalgic those days. &mdash 07/05/05 - 08:30:17 AM
Nostalgic those days.
Music of recollection.
Guitar and synthesizer.
The duet is simple and beautiful.

This one... &mdash 08/01/05 - 05:56:27 PM
...goes to to my How The Heck Did I Miss THAT? List...

I am heartfeltly sorry I did. THis is just what I like.

I, too, used to have a friend in the Seventies that I played
improv duets with....nothing as nice as this, mind
you...but the feel of playing music by feel is resonant...

AND Tascam four tracks...Boy...AND WHERE IS MY
EBOW?...

You really capture here what the inventors SAID they were
about, which was to capture a violin-like sustain on an
electric guitar...

This is a gorgeous tone, remarkable for where the
recording started out...Really nice....

Into the iTunes it goes, with my gratitude...

Ed

Thanks Ed! I love the e bow. I bought this one in 1980...and it's still going
strong. Funny, I just brole it out the other day and showed it to my 16 year old.
His comment "what the hell is that?".

I have some other recordings where I was using it on various amped
acoustics...and a Chapman Stick. Very cool, wonder if I can find them?
Well...theres a few dozen more hours where this one came from and if I ever get
around to transferring it I'll let you know.

Thanks for the comments.

Woo, just listened to your other piece "UnAltered"
and now this, this is really fantastic stuff that
speaks to me man. Now I need a CD with all
the songs that you did with Michael.
Great music.

Cheers

Dang man...that's a very nice thing to read. I don't think compliments get much
better than that. If I can dig up some more, you're happy to it.
