Description:
East meets West, seashanties go mad!! A million, trillion thanks to dearest joan especially wallyjoan who made it possible and to the lovely rebsie for to use of her studio and the mixing and, of course, the haberdasher for the hat!
Lyrics:
Heave Ho, me hearties! Avast! Weave yer baggywrinkle. Tighten the sheepshank! Open the seacock! Lower the spanker and watch out for the high flyin’ yankee!
What shall we do with the drunken sailor?
What shall we do with the drunken sailor?
What shall we do with the drunken sailor?
Earl-eye in the morning!
Weigh! Hey!! Up she rises!
Patent blocks of different sizes!
Weigh! Hey!! Up she rises!
Earl-eye in the morning!
Sling him in the long boat ‘til he’s sober!
Pull out the plug and wet him all over!
Take him! Shake him! Try and wake him!
Trice him up on a running bowline!
Give him a taste of the bosun’s rope-end!
Give him a dose of salt and water!
Shave his belly with a rusty razor!
Put him into bed with the captain’s daughter!
(She was a relative of the cat-o-nine-tails!)
That’s what we’ll do with the drunken sailor
Hoorah! Up she rises,
Hoorah! Up she rises,
Hoorah! Up she rises,
Earl-eye in the morning!

thank you pv - i'm not actually sure that it's my kinda thing either but... nothing ventured and i love the idea of hands across the sea - if you see what i mean!! stepping out of the comfort zone always brings the most satisfaction and... any excuse for a new hat! x [ Reply to This ]
This is one of my wife's favorite songs &mdash 07/05/05 - 03:33:59 PM
but she has never heard a rendition like this one. Enjoyed
it, caroline, especially the hearty vocal, and the subtle
creaky seafaring sounds at the beginning.
Shave my belly with a rusty razor! 9-9-9-9.
Fantastic work from all the JOANs too, the drunken
sailors.

I love the mix mix of vocals and music. The JOANs have a great knack for playing loud at moderate to low volumes, a real zen approach. I really liekCaroline's vocals. Kinda of like a female Johny cash. I gonna have to put this on my summer mix CD for my friends. [ Reply to This ]

Well, I suppose it's a claim to fame, of sorts. As
Perceptualvortex said, really not my kinda thing, but
gotta admire what you've done here. No extra marks
for that hat, that would be cheating… plus I happen
to know that you didn't record the song wearing it…

Is it just me, or are there are some really brilliant and
interesting collaborations taking place on Macjams right

love the drums and the guitar on this. I'd like the backing
a bit louder in the mix on occasions.. Brilliant. [ Reply to This ]

I am on a sailboat again.... &mdash 07/06/05 - 08:45:09 AM
The beginning sounds are right off the docks at any
thriving marina where older sailboats are. The creaking,
the fog bell. Great guitar work... chords with the ethereal
notes interspersed. And Caroline, what vocal presence!
As only a Brit can sing. It is like you are the Marina Dock
Marm coming to straighten out the drunken sailor.
Very authentic version.

cool beginning the whole brings back memories of my navy days &mdash 07/07/05 - 09:15:36 AM
Being a sailor in the navy, I can identify with rowdy drunken
sailors. Though I never drunk booze in the Navy, I remember
one petty officer that didn't like me and he made my life
quite challenging so say the least and boy he sure fits the
tune.
Your bringin back memories :)

That certainly qualifies as a different sea-shanty (I believe they were originally used to keep time hauling on the anchors and sails). They might drop a few anchors for this one.

The tangy smell of the sea wafted through my nostrils as
this tune unfolded in all its seafaring glory.
The funky, gritty guitar backs up Caroline's sexy, husky
voice well. This has an honest, straightforward feel to it,
like I'm sitting in pub on the wharf quaffing a brew,
listening to this sailor tale.
Great atmosphere on this! [ Reply to This ]

Can I be a swabbie? &mdash 07/09/05 - 03:49:28 PM
What a great introduction to you, Caroline. This is my four year old daughter's favorite song and I've put it on my iPod to surprise her with.
It's worth listening to this song just to hear you say "rusty." Your voice is very cool and not at all what I'd expected from a retired primary school teacher. It's like Tom Jones mixed with Johnny Cash mixed with...Caroline.
Great job on the music, too JOAN. I would have liked the background to be a little louder, too. Caroline's voice has so much character that it pulls one's attention very much in her direction. [ Reply to This ]
Can I be a swabbie? &mdash 07/09/05 - 05:15:51 PM
we're listening seattle! i'm quite, quite sure that joan would be delighted to have you on board in any capacity you care to mention. I would feel less responsible if this wasn't played to minors - do you think it is safe? retired primary school teachers are people too! you do know that i'm playing, of course - you made me laugh - thank you SO much for the lovely things you have said here x [ Reply to This ]
