Description:
One take. One Garageband track using built-in Powerbook mic. Made up the lyrics on the fly as I played... hence the Gibberish title. This is not finished, polished or refined but a very rough sketch.

If we had a Diamonds in the Rough section I would post it there.

Comments, as always, are welcome and encouraged.

Lyrics:
They're there but they don't make much sense!

Hardware:
Washburn Acoustic, PB and built-in mic.

Software:
Garageband- one track with minimal effects

Fun... &mdash 07/06/05 - 05:53:38 AM
...this will be really good when you've put it together. Nice
singing even through the pinhole. Like the
impassioned sections like "don't believe in anything" and I
like the little pause before the return to the verse... I hope
you keep some of the wildness of this version in any later
ones.

Fun... &mdash 07/06/05 - 09:04:38 PM
Thanks, Mando- It's not that I don't have better equipment but this was the
easiest way to get the rhythm down while it was fresh in my mind. One of the
reasons I posted was to push myself to finish it. Glad you liked!

Wow! Thanks! One of the interesting things about writing like this is that you
never know what lyrics will appear. A lot of times I wind up building the rest
of the words around one phrase... you picked out one of my favorites. Will
certainly be working on polishing this one!

I Look forward to Hearing This Develop &mdash 07/06/05 - 07:28:56 AM
Very good, spirited singing and playing. Do you plan on
keeping it acoustic?

Hi Mungo- still haven't decided... I think there could very possibly be acoustic
and electric versions of this one. Besides, you know I can't not post 12
different versions of the same song ;)

This is it..... &mdash 07/06/05 - 08:58:46 AM
This is how I compose.... turn on the mike.... start playing
guitar... and start singing words. Some make sense...
most don't and many words are just gibberish. I love
this cause it is spontaneous music from the heart and gut.
Can't wait to hear the finished song that comes out of
this. Often for me the song differs quite a bit from
sessions like this, although this seems like a great music
bed to go with. Kudos man.

It's a great way to write music. For me it's necessary, not having any formal
musical training (beyond chorus in hish school that it) and me a self taught
instrumentalist. So glad to know I'm not alone!

Thanks, Jack!

I can hear... &mdash 07/06/05 - 12:15:17 PM
...your Mellencamp influence. This is a well constructed
song, and for you to lyricise "on the fly" is awesome. With
a little polish, noise reduction, and additional elements,
this will surely be a well rounded composition by today's
standards. Your ability to just "go with it", singing and
playing live, amazes me. Thanks for letting me hear this
before you posted.

Thanks Al. John Mellencamp taught me how to play guitar... sort of. A
songbook of JM songs with chord charts and I was off and
running...stumbling and tripping :) Anyway- thanks for hearing the influence.
I'm sure you will hear future versions... since I'll likely ask you to mix them!

Sims language &mdash 07/06/05 - 12:21:01 PM
Thanks for the peek inside your songwriting process,
Alan. I had trouble understanding many of the lyrics. My
kids play a computer game called Sims, where the
characters speak to each other in a language like this. Sort
of close to English, but not exactly...

However the music on Sims never rocks like this. Fun
piece. 7-8-9-8

Well... I did call it Mumbles and Gibberish, lol. The next step will be for me to
get off my butt and write more inteligible lyrics around the ones that are clear
and make sense. The tough part is trying to keep with the song's character
and having it make sense.

Interesting observation about the Sims... and right on the money!

Impassioned Vocal &mdash 07/06/05 - 07:07:53 PM
Really like your singing here AC. Lot of real emotion
catchs up the listener. Be interesting to see how you
develop this. If you want guitar noodling I'm available.

Impassioned Vocal &mdash 07/10/05 - 07:18:16 PM
Thank you for the offer, Bronco. It's something I may just take you up on. I
really appreciate your comment on the vocal... It nice to know the feel and
passion of a song can be conveyed even without inteligible words.

Improvising lyrics! &mdash 07/06/05 - 10:21:12 PM
Now thats impressive! I can hear this with a full band playing, it has the energy and lyrics.
Go for it!

Improvising lyrics! &mdash 07/08/05 - 04:13:53 AM
Thank you, Mimi! I think this may turn into two versions- a cleaned up,
stripped down version similiar to this and more of a straight up rocker.
Always glad when you stop by!

Hey! &mdash 07/06/05 - 10:33:01 PM
I really like it. Improvision works well with u. I wouldn't
mind laying some vocals over a guitar track like this.
Someone should make me one....lol. Good job.

Hey! &mdash 07/11/05 - 05:08:09 AM
Very cool, Mr S. When I get some time to put down a guitar track I'll send it
along to you. I'd love to hear what you do with it!

I vote &mdash 07/10/05 - 08:23:08 AM
for the cleaned up, stripped down version.

Actally, I don't think it needs a lot of cleaning up. And I
really like your voice raw.

Lovely &mdash 07/12/05 - 06:38:54 PM
I'm always impressed by people who can improvise,
because it's something I really struggle with ... but
you've taken it to an exceptional level. If this is what
you can make up as you go along I'm very much
looking forward to hearing the 'final' version ...

Thanks, Rebsie. I'm really glad you liked the song. Now if I can only make
some sense out of the lyrics!!

Rough cut... &mdash 07/14/05 - 06:31:56 AM
...with a sharp edge. Nice playing and singing. Even
if the words don't have their full meaning yet the
delivery conveys great emotion. Like the melody,
both guitar and vocal. Really amazing that you
captured that with the built in mic. Look forward to
the finished product.

I thought I invented that technique! This is great work.
Just goes to show what you can do "wood sheddin." I like
your style and will check out your other tunes as well.
Good job and thanks for sharing your process...

Gibberish rocks! &mdash 07/21/05 - 10:05:12 AM
It's all about a vibe, it's great and you got it.
We've recorded songs using a similar approach
just getting the rhythm and going with it. Your voice
sounds great and solid guitar too. There are some songs
where it's nice for the listener to think they know all the
words and have them make them up in their own mind.
Ala Pearl Jam's Yellow Ledbetter. The words to that, who
knows? Anyhow, your playing and spirit come through
so yeah, Gibberish rocks!

I haven't been here to this site in awhile and like Myst I hade
to find the latest AClarke song...this song has a 60's feel to it
great job on the one take, it really does give it a performance
aura to it, if you had a paypal hat in this submission I'd throw
some money into it! :)

Wait. I am...

Great rhythm. Great vocal feel.

I want to get to do the lead guitar on the Sixties version.

I wish I could make up lyrics on the go too - this sounds
awesome. I think with drums, a heavy Hammond and bass
would be a knock out! Very good melody and guitar.

Thanks Mikki- Can't wait for colder weather so I can not feel guilty about
recording indoors. I think this is worth taking beyond the sketch it is currently.

Your bio page says you're in Maine- whereabouts? Im in Southern Maine on NH
border.

pursuing. I like the energy the piece conveys. Sort of a down home
kinda vibe. It will be interesting to hear your choices when you add to
it. Looking forward to it.

sounds good. &mdash 10/08/05 - 07:49:06 PM
Improvised lyrics similar to Pearl Jams - yellow ledbetter. With some
more effort and thought this could be a great track.

off the cuff &mdash 03/21/08 - 09:11:26 AM
I like this a lot. Recording like this is always the best. If you go back and try to put sensible words and fix the little bits it comes out wrong. I have a few songs that I tried to "fix" and they went nowhere. Of course, I'd love to hear you take a stab at polishing it up (I'm sure not everybody is as incompetent as I am!).
