Description
This is a folk song I wrote when I was living in South Africa, it's about a roomate of mine, her first experience of real violence. She was the most beautiful, kind, wonderfully cheerful person until that day, and so I wrote this song for her.

Lyrics
Mary Alice

Mary Alice was a girl who lived inside my house,
She'd say there's a way the wind does blow I'd say
I know I know I know
She'd make me tea when I would get upset, and I'd say,
Are these the days we're living in?

One day I came home, found her talking to herself by the trees,
I do remember that that day there was a light breeze
She said you can't believe what I have just seen
Are these the days that we're living in?

I'm never going outside my house,
I didn't know it was so blue.
It's just so cold outside, just so cold outside,
And I don't know what to do

Mary Alice was a girl who lived inside my house,
Her spirit was insane, like marching in the rain.
But this day, there was this coldness in her eyes,
Like she'd grown tired of the skies

On the street this man wore a bloody mask,
Had tried to steal a woman's bag,
The policemen's feet, then they just beat and beat,
And then they laughed and laughed and laughed.

At this point, she cried and the skies were turning awful gray,
I wasn't sure what I could do or I could say.
I looked in her eyes and saw something inside,
Would you believe I saw the sky? I told her

Mary, imagine mirrors in your hands
See how the world shows many views
But those people there, they are trapped and scared
And they don't know what to do,

She started saying,
I didn't know if was so cold outside,
I didn't know it was so blue,
It's just so cold outside it's just so cold outside,
And I said, Mary, only without you,

There are these people in this world who destroy everything they see,
But you know if it was up to me, I'd be in your hands.

There are these places grow so cold, somehow I guess I never always,
But I couldn't live in this cold cold world without you

And equally there are these people who just laugh and say hellos
But when they say I love you, I love you more, I need you more, I love you more

This day you should have seen her face,
Her bright red cheeks and fresh blue tears,
There's a saying that an hour don't make a day,
But there are so many in the years.

But Mary why so sad girl? Why so blue?
Here's another saying that I hold true,
If you believe in life and you believe in love
Well then I believe in you
this world belongs to you
Then I believe in you

And these are the days we're living in
We're living in

Or

Mary Alice was a girl who lived inside my house,
I loved that she loved bats,
She'd say a day was like a thousand leprechauns on pogo sticks

But this day there was a sadness in her eyes
Like she's suddenly grown tired of the skies
And then she told me

Great...
It's how that light-headed sound goes with the awful
image of her shock at the assault on the theif. Really like
the way this song rolls on... I would like to have heard the
alternate words you had posted down below. "A day is like
a thousand leprechauns on pogo sticks." I thought I was
the only one who had days like that....

Great...
Thanks so much, both of you. Re: alternate lyrics, I'll definitely rerecord them
for you in a bit, after I finish a couple more folks songs. on that note, if you
liked this one, check out Coyhaique, I knew then, and Broken hearts (which is
definitely a good old fashioned folk song!) and let me know what you think.
Really, thanks again, TF

Complex lyrics, great lines
Another really solid melodic idea. I really like story songs,
but I had a little trouble following this one, it wasn't as
straightforward as the music, not as tight as my brain
needed it to be on this rushed day. The idea is large, and I
got lost on the "kicked and beaten" line and other places.
Lots of great lines, tho. And great ideas. Just thought maybe
you could help me go from thought to thought with either
lyric edits or musical cues so I know when to shift gears,
bridges and such, if that makes sense. Still, I enjoyed the
tune.

Yeah, I was a bit afraid of that. When I perform this one, I always have to give a bit of an intro to it because everything moves so fast. It's a bit long now, so I can't really add anything, though I am aware that there are a couple of lyrical jumps that are pretty big. The musical cues are a good idea, I'd been thinking about having an accompanying instrument for the narrator and for Mary Alice, so the back and forth doesn't get confusing. Thoughts?
