Description:
This summer I purchased 3 ukuleles. My daughter wished one for her 7th birthday. Then when I found these ukuleles at around 20 USD each, I got ourselves three at once. I figured that otherwise she would have had the rest of us begging to borrow hers all the time.

Yesterday my son (8) wanted we record something on ukuleles. So we started, me making soundcheck while he handled computer. While making the soundcheck I came up with this rag, so I told him ”please can we just wait a moment with our recording ... let me just record this one first”.

He was patient and so we did. And after that we also recorded another one together! And in a couple of days I hope to post that one too.

PS Couldn't find Ukulele Ragtime in the genre list, so ... what to you think? Is it Folk or Classic or what? DS

What are you? &mdash 07/19/05 - 03:19:55 PM
Some kind of a wizard?? I have seen these ukeleles. In fact
my father used to sell them at his music store years ago. I
would pick them from time to time and pluck, but never
produced anything resembling music. This isn;t music,
either. It's wizardry! Black magic!!!!

Run for your lives!!!!

create, so I feel honored.

How come it doesn't make that noise? This is beautiful. I
really like instruments with such short sustain. I don't
know why... and of course they're much harder to get a
decent tune from than something where the sustain
carries it. Maybe that's why they sound so lovely when
they're played by someone who can really make them sing
- and swing, as this does. It's beautiful.

In the years before he died Paul McCartney apparently
used to go round to George Harrison's house and after
dinner they'd each get out a ukulele and play together. I
like the image of that - these two great musicians with a
great deal of raw history behind them, and they chose the
level playing field of a ukulele to make friends again.

Anyway... I'm awed. And jealous. Mine doesn't do that.

Thanks a lot mandolinquent! Makes me warm to get your appreciation!

I feel like you that theese small string instruments are loaded with charm. They
are friendly ... thats what they are ...

PS Have your seen the little video-clip with ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro
playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps in Central Park? If not send me your e-

He's ba-aa-aack.... &mdash 07/19/05 - 06:32:57 PM
...new name and all...

And this is just TOO MUCH.

I call to your attention the web site of my old friend
Robert Wheeler, founder of Ukulele Consciousness and
also associated with something called Rock That Uke!

http://rockthatuke.com/2005RTU/HTML/ukecon.htm

HE will want to hear THIS.

Beware. Some of Robert's website and, well, thought
patterns generally, involve "mature content matter"...He's
got an amazing collection of classic and custom built and
even plastic ukes. He descends on music stores and yard
sale everywhere...

You haven't lived until you've heard a uke-and-saw duet.
Or uke and tuba, a personal favorite of mine...

As to THIS fine piece of invention:

Nice picking and sensibility. It's great to hear someone
step out of the plinky-plunky Tiny Tim style wicky-wacky-
woo-ness of old style uke. Those arpeggiated runs are
amazing, really neat!

Very sprightly. Bright, clear recording. Clear but not
brittle.

So you have an eight year old into recording, too? I will
soon be posting some of my son's compositions...He is
working on his nickname and artwork....

Good to have you back!

Ed

I believe Ejh is right about what you have done here, Curry. Instead of the
typical, over-used strumming technique often heard on ukeleles, you are
doing some intricate finger-picking and mini-arpeggios that give this 'plastic'
instrument a warmer, more lively, and sophisticated tone. It reminds me, in a
way, of Bela Fleck playing traditional Classical pieces on banjo (his fine album
"Perpetual Motion").

Thank yoy Ejh and Tom! Your support is fabolous!

Well I didnt think about if it was ukulele style or not. Rather I was a little lazy
and did it the easy way and just kept pickin in a fashion already knew. Like as if
it was a smaller guitar with two strings missing.

And for you guitar players I can hint that ukulele is really not that hard to get
into since it is tuned as a guitars first four strings. Only that fourth string is an
octave up an thus give you tighter chords ... and that it is higher tuned as if
puting capo on guitars seventh fret. So if you play as a D chord on guitar it
becomes an A on the ukulele and so on.

Thank you thetiler! Well ukulele feels like a lot fun, (but as I play it just as if it
was a smaller guitar the challenge is minimal).

But you spotted what (for me at least) is the biggest challenge: the small
freatbord! Fingers used to steel stringed acoustic guitar feels too big, clumsy
and unsensitive.

I'm constantly entertained by your ability to breathe new
life into this gentle, and currently somewhat obscure
genre of music.

The Uke is an interesting addition to your musical palette
and put to splendid use in this little ditty. It is simply
charming.

It certainly stands well on its own. Still, I'd be interested in
hearing how you might treat it with a counterpuntal guitar
accompaniment... and maybe a washboard... perhaps a
kazoo... and ... ;-)

You're a breath of fresh air, my friend.

I started teaching myself the ukelele about 5 years ago and then hit a wall and stopped. This inspires me to find a teacher so I can make a more expensive ukelele sound even half as good as this. :-)

Anyone who can make four little strings sound like that
deserves a big ovation (no pun intended!). Such a happy
little piece of work - your children are lucky to have a dad
who can teach them how to do that stuff.
I've never tried a uke, but may have to next time I travel.
Brilliant!!

Lucky kids! &mdash 07/20/05 - 05:43:15 AM
Thanks a lot jiguma. I went to your page and listened to your latest post "The
Thin Man Dreams" which I liked a lot. Really worthy.

Strangely enough I don't teach my kids any music. I don't have the patience,
and maybe also because my own parents never bothered a second about my
playing as a kid, I was driven by sheer love of the instrument, (nice to be able
to talk to a shrink about this :)

So it has turned out that my 8 year old is the one (so far) that has this drive to
go. He learns by listening to records, immitating me, and only occationally
coming to me with questions, which I try to answer if not busy. But most of
his learning he is doing just by himself. In due time I will post a ukulele duet
with him and me...

First of all, congratulations on your new name!

This is a very cute, catchy little tune on a very unusual
instrument. I bought a ukelele on eBay a few years ago but
haven't learned how to play it yet. The way you extract
such wonderful music on the ukelele is VERY INSPIRING
and makes me want to learn how to play it now!

You are an excellent musician who can make great music
out of a child's toy. You could probably do so on a
cardboard box!

I think that the present Folk genre designation is fine.

You captured the whimsical, happy sound of the ukelele
perfectly on this recording. Thank you so much for
sharing it here!

used to play from morning to night seven days a weeek. So today I seem have

my old friend with the new name. This is ridiculously
good! I laughed when i played it the tenth time just as

burn it!

How you can get those big hammy hands around that little
thing, then make it sing that way....ridiculously good!!!!
