Description:
Just a little ditty about graduating from college and then...you know...

Lyrics:
I Cannot Feel the Vibe
by Nonso Christian Ugbode

Am Em
There’s a pillow on my face

F C
And I cannot see the time

Am Em
And every body’s woken up

F C
Still I cannot feel the vibe

Am Em
They won’t call me back

F C
Because my résumé’s a mess

Am Em
But every body’s found a job

F C
And I’m sitting on my fence

Am Em F C

Am Em
There’s a pile of circumstance

F C
And it’s just sitting at my door

Am Em F
Oh, if you really wanna call me, you’d pick up the
C
telephone.

Am Em F C
I see fear in faces, but their lives just pass me by

Am Em F
Oh, if you really wanna call me, you’d pick up the
C
telephone.
Am Em F C
Six O Clock news tells me I should fear my refrigerator

Am Em F
Oh, if you really wanna call me, you’d pick up the
C
telephone.

Am Em F C (hold)

BRIDGE:

G C
They sell fear in bottles

G C
They sell fear in cans

G C
Just you stop buying it

F G
Stop believing everything

F C
Stop believing, everything

Am Em F C

Am Em
There’s a pillow on my face

F C
And I cannot see the time

Am Em
And every body’s woken up

F C
Still I cannot feel the vibe

F C
I cannot feel the vibe

F C
I cannot feel the vibe

F C
I cannot feel the vibe

F C
I cannot feel the vibe

F (hold)

Be-you-ti-ful... &mdash 07/22/05 - 09:11:56 AM
The mix is a little odd; that's not necessarily bad. The
piano is quite far back but your voice is really, really near
the front compared to it. But it's a lovely vibe and a
beautifully-written song. And nice vocals. The harmonies
on your vocal are exquisitely understated. It's very nice
and contained. It really reminds me of Badly Drawn Boy.

Whoa! &mdash 07/22/05 - 09:39:39 AM
BoiAfrica, you actually stole a song idea of mine. I have
already copyrighted "They sell fear in bottles, They sell
fear in cans." You will have to delete these lines from your
song.

Seriously, though, this is a wonderful piece. Excellent
post. Welcome to MacJams.

(Thanks mandolinquent for the tip here)

OUTSTANDNG! &mdash 07/22/05 - 09:56:24 AM
Love it! Don't even have any constructive feedback. Not so
sure the bongos were needed in the last half, but they
certainly didn't freak me out.

Actually I had that same thought as nisper... I wasn't sure you needed the
bongos, but I forgot to mention that. Thanks nisper.

I know the feeling &mdash 07/22/05 - 11:57:58 AM
Excellent song. I really like your expressive phrasing and
soft delivery of your vocals. It fits perfectly with the lyrics.
Thoughtful with a touch of dark irony. Unique and very
listenable. I look forward to more music from you.

One nit:
I'm not sure if you put some kind of filter on the harmony
vocals or if I'm hearing artifacts from heavy mp3
compression. That's the only thing that sounds a little
wrong to me. If it's the latter then I suggest compressing
at 192 kbps/44.1 kHz for good mp3 quality.

Anyway, I still like the song a lot and will download it.

silky smooth &mdash 07/22/05 - 02:30:05 PM
You have conjured up a very nice, mellow atmosphere on
your MacJams debut song.

Your vocals have a silky, smooth quality which pour out
like honey. The understated, yet interesting
accompaniment complements your voice very well.

I like the nice little extra touches such as that extra
measure before "they sell fear in bottles". I also like the
little instrumental section before "there's a pillow on my
face". I wish that were just slightly longer, but it's a nice
change of pace which adds interest.

When the "pillow" line starts, I hear the addition of strings,
which would sort of intensify the last part of the song.

But this is really good as is; I thoroughly enjoyed listening
and I look forward to more songs from you.

WELCOME!

Woot &mdash 07/22/05 - 03:41:42 PM
Really great! reminds me a little of Ben Harper, maybe a little more of Tracy Chapman, and it's really a great sound. Me, I like the distant piano and the bongo/conga part. The little bits surrounding the melody drift in and out of the groove in a sort of disembodied way that reinforces the alienation expressed in the lyrics, so that the production seems to suit the song. But maybe that's just me...nonetheless, very good.

Wow! &mdash 07/22/05 - 06:47:29 PM
I'm seriously overwhelmed and humbled that I got so
many listens, I'm doing a posting this way so I can thank
everyone for their input, sort of puts the good and the not
so good in perspective about the song which is always
always helpful, I wanna say I love you guys for your
feedback but then I'll be the creepy guy who loves people
he doesnt even know, but darn it I love ya!

Thanks for the input, thanks lots! :)

It's the song... &mdash 07/22/05 - 07:19:34 PM
...that makes it, first of all. Great song, great groove, great
lyrics...a moment of time perfectly conveyed.

I could maybe a db or two more on the vocals at points.
At some points, it's just right. I get that it's supposed to
be laid back and all, but at some points I had a hard time
hearing the words. Maybe a compressor. Not a big
change, in any case.

The song feels fully realized, really whole and complete,
and the starkness in the presentation is integral and
great. No prob with bongoes or piano from me...

Superb song &mdash 07/22/05 - 09:04:29 PM
Love the songwriting. Love the phrase "can not feel the
vibe." I can also hear Badly Drawn Boy in it, and that's
nothing but a compliment. I hope to hear your production
skills develop to match your musicianship.

Wow... &mdash 07/22/05 - 10:07:13 PM
Your imagry is excellent. This is what music can be:
simple, emotional and powerful. You did beautiful work
with four chords.

I also liked the mix. The piano pushed to the back
subjugates it to the accoustic and your voice, which feel to
me as they shoudl be the dominant parts of the song. You
could drop the piano and drum and it would retain its
power and revelance.

Great first post &mdash 08/09/05 - 08:37:03 AM
Tracy Chapman meets Nick Drake. Great piece of
songwriting. I love the bongos (I know not everyone
sold on them) and think they work well. Have to say
that I agree with Ejh about the vocals though. You
have a nice voice but sometimes they just didn't
sound right - not sure if it's the type of mic or what
but they need tightening up or sorting out in the mix.
But you've obviously got talent, and much more than
I have, so I look forward to hearing more.

will come in time.
