Description
The latest version of this song can be heard here: Icarus II.

Taking ka-klick's advice, I had the bottle of wine before doing this number (instead of after). This is a genre-bending jazz tune using blues riffs/progressions and shifting keys to create something I've never done before. The highlight is the soprano sax solo during the final vamp by Donny McCaslin that imitates dolphins singing. (Donny also plays on Crazy Story.) Sometimes I never know where a composition will lead me; this was one of those times. (No loops. All electric piano, synths, synth basses, and MIDI drums played in during about 24 separate passes.) Artwork: detail from "Icarus Drowning" by F. Ronald Fowler.

Donny also plays saxes on Crazy Story.

Lyrics
ICARUS
(Day In The Sun)

Ride the wind, oh, on this day in the sun.
I'll have my way in the sun, on this day in the sun.

I got wings made of light.
I got a heart ready for flight.
Got two arms that don't tire.
Got a mind set on fire.
Two eyes bigger than a TV screen.
I'm gonna ride those sunbeams,
ride those sunbeams to you today.
Cuz this is my day, yes it is.
I'm gonna rise into the sky
Like a soul that just won't die,
like a spirit beyond pain
I'm gonna reach into that sweet, sweet flame
and pick me a sweeter bouquet of sunrays.
And fly back home to you...

Like Icarus.
Did he make it? Did he have a plan?
Did his arms hold? Did he find land?
The shoreline? Like your body
always wanting more. Always wanting
more... of his day in the sun.

In the sun.
In the sun.
In the sun.
Like Icarus, in the sun.

Your best
This is your day AND your song! I love the synth sounds.
Viceral and grinding, but smoothed over by the bass.
Punching horns remind me of Peter Gabriel... also, nice
choice with the half-time drums. Wow-keys on the
upbeats remind me of Herbie Han*censored*.

My only criticism: although passionate, the vocals are a
little rough.

Maybe that's what you were going for... and I do like the
fifth harmonies and eerie, almost atonal melodies at
points. Naked Lunch/Lethal Weapon/Bladerunner sax
toward the end is really remarkable. You have many
talents!---Kind regards,

Your best
Yes, the rough lyrics were a choice. This is my favorite so far too. It received
three 8's to start off (yours included), and then a 1. Hard to figure why it
would get a 1 unless for reasons that have nothing to do with music or
community. Thanks for you comments. Herbie H is one of my favorites!

Your best
I do feel more "soul" from this performance, so maybe the wine worked. ;-)
This is really nice. As others have said, I can feel some Weather Report
influences coming out of the instrumentals (I think it's the complex chord
changes and the soprano sax riffs).

I feel your pain on the "one-bomb" it seems the best you can hope for around
here sometimes is to get 2 or 3 honest ratings in before someone comes in
and drops one.

flyin'!
wow. you were flying like Icarus with this one! this flows like wind from one emotion to another. i can feel the sun on your feathers and the wine in your voice, rolling over the waters. i especially love the way it is the siren song of the girl you are flying toward that drives you on, intoxicated, into that incredible sax solo. love the hints of echoes behind the sax, by the way. most excellent! all the way to the final chord.---morning girl

Great groove
Am enjoying following your journey. I love the groove on this and the
horn stabs. Is the horn sound from GB or Jampack? Funny how things
sound different when in a mix where they belong. There are so many
textures and influences here, all delightful, but melded into your own.

I like the way the beginning builds. Keep bringing them on!

Of a whole
I love how yu take so many parts (and styles) and
make them part of a whole in your songs. Your song
structure is complex, yet it all flows like it supposed
to be this way. Easy, yet not at all. I really like this
one! Can't wait to see what you come up with next...

Interesting
I'm going to have to re-listen to this one a few times. The
construct is interesting and worth paying attention to.

Super!
Fine piece -- very polished, professional-sounding. Solid jazz feeling, very listenable. What would I do differently (gad, another armchair critic...) -- bring the vocals down just a tad, let the fine instrumentation shine a bit more -- also, how would it sound to double-track the vocals to a second mirrored track (Option-Copy to identical instrument), not get them too far out of sync to echo, but simply give it a loftier feel. But that's pretty subtle fine-tuning for an already outstanding jazz piece. Thanks for sharing it.---Ed K

Super!
Funny thing about my voice... when i mix it in headphones, it always pops out
more in the mixdown. I think it is the strength in the lower mids that take
over. I am too used to mixing for song demos where the lyrics have to be
heard first, perhaps. Thanks for the careful listening.

On that "1" . . .
Just a thought -- my guess is that whoever posted the "1" rating really meant to post it as a "10" and either misunderstood the rating system (got it backwards) or failed to add a zero to the 1. Otherwise, I don't see how to take a 1 seriously on this piece.---Ed K

I love the way the song, half way through, gets totally sidetracked by the author's memory and desire for his woman. The entire music shifts, the words refocus, and everything becomes an amazing conscious-streaming ode to taking risks in the blazing sun of passion. Excellent.

So long ago...
...I voted on this way back when. But I wasn't comfortable
commenting at first. Songs like this were way out of my
league. I like the roughness of the vocals. They have an
honesty that is tough to capture when singing
complicated lyrics. The music is unquestionably top
notch. I've mentioned it before, but the arrangements of
your jazz songs remind me of Flim and The BBs... and of
Dave Grusin.
Stun Nutz said 4670 days ago (December 12th, 2004)
complex...
Enjoyed the jazz chord changes and vocal
harmonizing before the sax solo, and the funky
bassline...the solo itself was a nice way to close...my
only criticism is that I didn't like the synths that
piped in at the beginning...they were a little
distracting from the tune, I think. I had to listen to
this one a few times to absorb it, but it was worth it.

complex...
The first section synth sounds are like the chaos of exhilaration, the rubmling
of a rocket taking off, the sound of wind in your ears at high speeds, the
distance you want to put between you and your troubles, all of that. And
then when Icarus, or I, get above it all, the soundscape cools out, only to
groove into the bliss of flight over the waves. And then the descent at the
very end, into the minor 11th. That was what I was thinking, anyway. When
layering ideas, sometimes I can get carried away...

These pictures that you come up with
I just can't believe these pictures you come up with.
Those artists are just magnificent in many of your images.
Just jaw dropping Tobin!

I like the fantasy movements when I can feel Icarus fly.
That is very important for me to lay hold of.

Like you did in grave robber just before the end.

These pictures that you come up with
Thanks. I was going for the fantasy / mythical sense in this one, grounded in
a sort of over-media stuck in TV-synth opening. Some place to escape from.
Thanks for going with all my imagery.

Journey me through this obsession that takes me into the
heart of the sun. I love the storytelling in your stuff. You
use structure like breakfast cereal and spit it out like a
gourmet for dinner. I want wings like that!

Yes, I love the sax part Donny came up with. I told him, "Sound like dolphins
and humpback whales." Each take had its own brilliance, so I weaved all three
takes together, using various effects. I love the result. Thanks for the listen.

Ian Hammer?
Haunted me a bit at the start but it got way more
complex. I think the wine helped with the spirit of this
song. The sax is ridiculous, like the delay that follows
behind. Nice production.
