Description:
I wrote this last summer/fall and it was just barely ready for the election, but I decided not to post it at the time. Decided I'd go ahead and post it now that some of the emotion has died down.
Lyrics:
Who is this dim pretender,
Who's led us down the garden path?
Led us boldly into battle,
Disregarding aftermath.
What hamlet's raving idiot
has been wrapped in robes of state?
We must now take them off him
I hope it's not too late.
-Chorus-
The crown was stolen for him
by villians with no shame.
There is no substance in him
just a puppet and a name.
A conservative without compassion
Who's managed to divide us all
Had our country go it's own way
Made it's greatness seem so small
Where are the weapons of mass destruction
That were pointed at our heads?
They keep us misinformed and frightened,
Want us cowering beneath our beds.
-Chorus-
The crown was stolen for him
by villians with no shame.
There is no substance in him
just a puppet and a name.

Love it...your voice really reminds me of latter period Nick
Cave (i am a big fan of his). Great moody track this...and I
can certainly empathise with the lyrics
Great!

Just did a quick random survey sampling of stuff at the iTMS of his stuff -
thanks, he's got an interesting sound and a real dark edge. Glad you liked the
song.

Cracking track &mdash 08/01/05 - 11:39:11 AM
Love the doom-laden gothic tone with shades of Johnny
Cash.
A really professional-sounding production too. Might
investigate Drums on Demand.

Thanks! Please do check out DoD they rock! I have Vol. 1 & 2 - they're well
recorded and are really well put together for song-writing, since each "set"
has specific "verse", "chorus", "intro", "fill" and "ending" variations (some more
than others) much more satisfying to work w/ than the stock GB drum loops
(most of the time) and it has a very "live" drummer feel, since they are
recorded from a real drummer, not sequenced in. It's like having a good
session drummer on call.

Great piece! Not surprisingly, love the tone of the vocals.
Nice mix of dark, emotion with mild, angst guitar. Well
mixed. Good job! [ Reply to This ]

Nice production value--some popping of the P's I would fix. Decent lyrics--political--anti-Bush. I feel though I've heard the song before. Nice guitar work though. [ Reply to This ]

'Made it's greatness seem so small' indeed how right you
are,
Heartfelt words, the disappointment in the man comes
through very clearly. No b******t just the truth. Well done,
great song. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks Willy!
You convinced me to put this up even though I've been keeping it on the shelf
for these months. "Mr. Rove" helped convince me that some of these things still
need to be said.

Aside from the politics (somehow I'm envisioning Ted
Kennedy singin this), this is a nice song. Your voice starts
out a little strained, but gets better. I like the sound of the
guitar. [ Reply to This ]

Teddy is too conservative. ;-)
I will agree that the first verse could be stronger vocally. Thanks.

Excellent stuff &mdash 08/02/05 - 07:16:46 AM
Lovely sound you've got here. Great vocals, lovely
guitar playing. The 'aaah' sections are lovely too
(excuse the technical term!) Very nice, heartfelt
bittersweet song.
And although I'm a Brit, I share your disgust with
you-know-who and the culture of fear he
propagates. [ Reply to This ]

Glad if I'm getting people to think. I have no illusions about changing the world
or anything, but you know even if someone's reaction is negative, hopefully I've
at least made a neuron or two fire for someone. Thanks for listening.

Solid song &mdash 08/02/05 - 11:09:36 AM
Well produced song. Thoughtful lyrics. Id' like to hear the
lead singer reprise some of the lyrics over the closing
chorus of "ahs", maybe with a more distant, reverbed,
wingspread sound. Great git work. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks Rich. I'll have a think about the ideas, but I think realistically, I'm likely
"done" w/ this one (nearly didn't post it, since I didn't want it to get too tapped
as sour grapes) appreciate the feedback though.

Thanks a bunch Caroline. I'm one of those tail of the baby boom folks that
technically grew up in the 60's but was just a bit too young to participate - but I
absorbed a lot, since my older sister graduated HS in '68. Been doing what I can
to keep the flame alive. :-)

Classic folk rock song... &mdash 08/02/05 - 02:38:27 PM
Your vocals (delivery & harmonies) are just perfect for this
kind of song. You sound so good. And thoses guitars...
man you got a really great sounding song here. Your
political critique of Bush is is so interwoven in great
lyrical (poetic) song writing that even an old conservative
like me can give you two thumbs up for this : ) This
harkens back to many of the really good political
protest songs that I remember from the sixties and
early seventies as many of us opposed the Vietnam War.
I am glad you posted this one.

Thanks, Jack. It says a lot that you can set aside your reaction to the politics of
the piece that fully - I really appreciate you being that open.

The world's a better place - maybe &mdash 08/02/05 - 06:19:55 PM
I don't know if it's appropriate to focus on lyrics on this site
but I feel a bit short changed by these - the sentiments okay
(and I've agreed with it for years) but this is more posturing
than poetry. [ Reply to This ]
The world's a better place - maybe &mdash 08/05/05 - 08:24:19 AM
First of all, welcome.
I'd say it's fine to focus on any given element of a song that you want to for
commenting, though I'd say it's best to keep the piece as a whole in mind
when doing any rating. I would further encourage you to continue to speak
your mind about any given piece (especially one I've posted). I would however
recommend that when you do go negative you do in a spirit of constructive
criticism and provide specific details as to what bothers you. It will lead to a
more productive experience for everyone.
In this specific case, I wish you'd drawn my attention to any particular parts of
the lyrics you find problematic from the point of view of what the song is
trying to achieve. In this case I'd say that my goal was not to achieve some
legendary status of grand poetry. I simply sought to convey a few fairly
simple points within the confines of a song form. This being a political piece
it shouldn't be surprising that it postures quite a bit - this is what a political
song is supposed to do AFAIK.
If you could provide some specific suggestions, I'd be happy to entertain
them (though, as I mentioned to another poster, I think I'm "spent" on this
particular tune).
Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment - I do appreciate that.

man id be... &mdash 08/05/05 - 08:37:31 AM
Thanks a bunch FB, somehow I do manage to keep doing stuff with a political
bent these days. Sometimes I wish I could stop, but right now it's the thing that
keeps ending up fueling me creatively, since there's a bunch of things
happening that keep triggering my thought process in a manner that makes me
want to communicate them.
Also, thanks loads about the vocals, since I really love your sound, I take that as
a great compliment.

great voice and guitar accompaniment...well articulated political message that is worth thinking about: the fine line between Us and Them; which one of Us will stand up and break down the walls...ignorance and apathy are probably the most dangerous forms of mass destruction [ Reply to This ]

Power to the people indeed! &mdash 08/04/05 - 05:21:34 PM
I'm a Brit so I only see the impact of Bush's polices
second-hand but I think it's safe to say that I'm not a
fan of him or his political ideology. Nice to hear such
good lyrics about this guy's mistakes from an
American. The song was good generally and you offer
a strong performance. Your voice is a bit Nick
Cave'ish, but I'm no big fan of his vocals and I prefer
yours. Nice guitar work and overall this sounds quite
professional. But too much repetition of the 'ahs' at
the end for my liking. I'd have brought the song to an
end about 30 seconds earlier but that's just me.
Good stuff, though, Ka-Klick. [ Reply to This ]
Power to the people indeed! &mdash 08/05/05 - 08:58:03 AM
Thanks for listening/commenting E.G. - I can understand about the repetition,
though my intention was to give a place for the outgoing guitar solo to have
something to play over while the whole thing fades, giving a kind of ride into the
sunset thing.

Ahhh! That's how I feel about current politics sometimes,

like the overall feel of the song. Your voice is great on
