Lyrics
Hey rainy Monday
Deep in the motorway
Turn on the radio
And the music starts to play

The same little melody
Out of all of the similar cars
Don't want no shocks on a Monday
You want to know just where you are

All I want to hear is music for lawyers
All I want to hear is music for the rain
All I want to hear is music to help me
Wish another day away

Don't want to hear no opera
Don't want to try your new direction
Or hear about the latest girl
Who's been messing with your affections

Just a pretty little melody
Sung by a pretty little group
This is how the world turns
And there's nothing you can do

All I want to hear is music for lawyers
All I want to hear is music for the rain
All I want to hear is music to help me
Wish another day away

Hey, I'm sorry... didn't put the lyrics up at first because I don't like them much -
second verse in particular - nobody talks like that! But they're there now.

nice
Thanks - it had to be busy - by the end everyone is parked on the motorway
dancing on their cars so it's going to be a little chaotic!

Groovy
Has an almost 70's FM radio feel, a bit Todd
Rundgrenish...a really good melodic track. Like it a lot -
well done Caroline for putting pressure on you to post it!!

Like Fifth Dimension or an early rock musical
Reminds of something from the mythical musical "Hairless,"
an answer to the mega-hit Hair by bald businessmen. I was
reminded of some of the Fifth Dimension tunes from the
70s. Very fun. I especially liked the backing vocals and the
instrumental break that had an incongruous lead guitar
following a fiddle; made me of an office band that gets
everyone to play together regardless of what they play. A
party atmosphere. The backing vocals build in the stereo
field in a surprising way, like the group is suddenly cloned in
surround sound. Fun.

Like Fifth Dimension or an early rock musical
Thanks for all the kind words everyone - hope you don't mind if I don't reply
to every comment.

I think the fiddle solo was a bad joke because the Corrs were really popular at
the time - and my brother plays the guitar so I wanted to give him a solo. I
like the mixing too.

I'd never thought about this song as being musical-like before but I see
what you mean. There are visuals in my head - sitting at the bus stop one day
I noticed two people going past in different cars, both miserable because they
were on the way to work, but both singing the same song, presumably
because they had the same radio station on. So it starts like that, and ends up
as I mentioned in the post above...

Godspell revived...
Definitely sounds like it was written for some 70s Musical,
very professional! Enjoyable!

Lawyer Music is good
I like the song. Didn't know Lawyers liked suck rockin music.

Lawyer Music is good
Yeah, it's a cheap shot - a slogan. I remember originally writing 'All I ever hear
is...', but that was hypocritical - I listen to Songs For Swingin' Lovers much more
than Trout Mask Replica.

So it's not a dig at lawyers, more just noting how often music is used to just get
through the day, when it can be so much more...

Tobin's right, as always…
…could indeed be from a 1970s rock musical. Good
melodic stuff and I love that instrumental interlude in
the middle and the choir at the end. So, you were in
Durham for a while? That was my neck of the woods
for a while. Anyway, great stuff, keep 'em coming.

Yes, I was in Durham for four years - 97-00. A lovely place to be - always feel
sad going past it on the train... thanks for the comments - glad you like the
song.

Show time!
Could be a TV show theme or a hit from a hip musical.
Really good production. Keep uploading. Your stuff is
cool.

Love it!
What a wonderful surprise! As the others said, this sounds
like it belongs in a musical, and I just adore musicals.
That chorus of voices is absolutely fantastic -- really adds
great depth and made me smile through the whole song.
Your lead vocals were great, too. Heck, the whole
production was excellent. Wild applause from this
audience!

My Lord
Erm...ironically, given the title (or was that intentional?)
it's very like My Sweet Lord by George Harrison.

So I had a look on the net to see when My Sweet Lord was
first released (I knew it was released a few years back, but
didn't know whether it'd been published before then.)

And things become more interesting, because as the
following website explains, Harrison himself ran into a
spot of bother for My Sweet Lord infringing the copyright
on the earlier song He's So Fine composed by Ronald
Mack and performed by The Chiffons.

A long lineage!!

My Lord
It wasn't intentional, but I noticed it after we finished the track. It's only the first
two chords and perhaps the first line of the melody - I think there would be
widespread difficulties if He's So Fine was the only song allowed to have the I-IV
progression. I don't think it's the most obvious 'reference' in there though...

Well WEll..

This is good, nice tempo and nice melody, but the lyrics
or some of the lyrics had a weird effect on me. Mais en
tout (but overall ) it feels good to hear something like that
in the morning!

Oh Happy Day...
...by curious coincidence, I've been downloading music
from the early 70's in this vein lately...

It's got a bit of Day By Day, it's got a bit of O Happy Day,
it's got some Up, Up and Away (In My Beautiful Balloon)...I
think Tobin nailed a number of influences...maybe
Melanie's Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)...Some Jesus
Christ Superstar around the edges...

I actually DON'T pick up a lot of My Sweet Lord,
comparativelly, but it's just that early 70's folk mass vibe
coming through...

To then have the lyric be about 'music for lawyers' is a
saving grace, I think...puts an edge on it that helps it give
a wink to its influences... The lyrics end up being
sophisticated and hip, and recontextualize the music...

Whoa. Did I really say 'recontextualize'. May be the first
time I used THAT word in a sentence...

Good song. I suspect it's going to be one I come back to,
especially for a car CD....And, um, sing along
to...sometimes...

Cute little pop song
Let me get out of the way that this is a great written song,
cool arrangement, cool instrumental parts. Several groups
I know would be happy having this on an album.

But.

This is something I'm big on: if you have a rhythmically
interesting element in the arrangement, don't fall in the
trap of having every instrument hack out the same
rhythm. In your case you have a syncopated rhythm in the
acoustic guitar. Then the bass starts playing that same
syncopation. Then the piano plays the same rhythm. I'm
hearing shades of it in the electric part. Even the
background singers sing the friggin' syncopation. Enough
already! Some independence, please.

Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine. Really, I like this song very
much, just wanted to get this out of the way.

Now you get to dole out tit for tat and tell me if on my
latest track "weav" I manage to layer 8 synths without
falling in the same trap....

Damn those happy lawyers :-)
If lawyers were as likeable as this song, I will start having them in my
circle of friends. This music made me nod my head and tap my feet. It
has very infectious energy and uplifting mood to it. I think this one is my
favorite of your songs so far. This one goes to my iPod, and that, not my
rating, is the ultimate compliment once can EVER get from me.

Totally Showtune.
This could totally be in a Musical. Don't take offense, I mean none.
