Description:
A few weeks ago, several MacJammers were having a group meeting in iChat. The subject came up about SlimGirl's birthday approaching soon. Mystified asked, "Do you have any plans for her, Alimar"? Well, needless to say, the wheels started rolling, and similar to “Mixed Nuts”, the process began.
Contacting everyone, mentioning what was in the works, sparked an interest for collaborating I have never experienced. A few days later, I created a "loop" based song, with every type of change I could think of hoping anyone caring to participate could find a place to insert their own "style". I held another "town meeting" to share the initial song bed. To my surprise, submissions arrived by the hour. Full verses, rhythm sections, vocal lyrics and snippets, transitions and modulations poured in... eventually replacing most of the original loops. Everyone who submitted parts submitted unconditionally!
The enthusiasm from everyone involved was overwhelming. Mysti, PGreenstone, Tom Atwood and I sent the "work in progress" back and forth continuously. If it weren't for them, especially Tom critiquing every morning, I don't know how I'd have gotten through it. Everyone else "buzzed" in daily to hear the progress.
Folks, I couldn't have done this without ALL of you. I tried to contact as many MJers as possible, but fell short by not being as thorough as possible. Several decisions had to be made as far as overall compositional continuity. So I apologize for leaving out certain parts, in order to make it "flow" better, and not become too cluttered. You have all done a marvelous job on this birthday tribute! – Alimar
Mystified, pgreenstone and I mainly served as additional ears for Alimar. Fresh ears. And he needed them, because I believe it is safe to say Alimar put in hundreds of hours on this wonderful piece. Everyone contributed in some way, but in the end, this is really a masterful job of organizing, editing, mixing and inspiring by Alimar. Excellent work! - Tom Atwood

Final mix and master was done on a vintage 1983, Apple "Lisa" with a Motorola 68000 CPU at a 5 MHz clock rate and had 1 MB RAM, equipped with dual 5.25 inch floppy drives in addition to an external 5 MB Apple ProFile hard drive. Special "LisaBand: music processor" developed by Xerox PARC (who developed the GUI) was used for the music encoding process. Final export took 48 hours to create an early form of sound file similar to an AIFF.Software:

In early May, 2004, I contacted a member of MacJams,
whom I thought had a unique style of singing and
composing. I asked if she were interested in collaborating
on an existing song she had posted at another site, asking
for suggestions, and possible assistance in producing the
song. She agreed to send her original version of "Don't
Take That Road", from which I wrote a complete new
composition around her existing vocals. I produced the
vocals, and combined the new music and within three
days, she posted it at Macjams.
It was the beginning of a unique friendship from accross
the ocean, having never met in person... only on iChat in
audio and video chats. We have since collaborated on a
number of songs which have been received very well, and
have won several awards on many music websites.
SlimGirlFat, you will always have a special place in my life.
I am, and always shall be your friend. One day we shall
meet in person. Happy Birthday!

Wow. This tune is excellent. I wanted to contribute, but 2 things kept me out of the loop.
I have some personal things to deal with right now and 2) I don't think my "style" would have fit into this great tune.
So from Doofy to SGF: Happy Birthday!!!

What a party! Amazing, truly professional eclectic mix and
spirited performances --- especially the group ensemble at
the end. Reminded me of the 60s. A WHOLE Lotta Love here.

Exceptional work, Alimar and a wonderful expression of your
friendship.
Many happy returns again, SGF!

happy birthday Slimmie! this is a great work guys!!
thanks for sharing

We pulled off yet another one. The next large collab will
be open to EVERY MacJammer. Not a secret one next time.
A post will be submitted in the forums, so all will have a
chance to contribute. Please understand an undertaking
as large as this has certain complications. As long as
everyone adheres to the criteria, we will have a blast!
A job well done, fellow "Love Fest" MacJammers... Long
live clichés!
Cameron
GREAT IDEA!!! -- to get everyone on MacJams involved in a musical project!
For such a monumental undertaking, you will indeed have to be very specific
about the individual contributions. Sort of like advising people what dish to
bring to a pot-luck dinner.
Now that your producing skills have been honed, and were DEFINITELY put to
the test with the Slimmie b-day song, I am sure that you will rise to this new
challenge with grace and aplomb!
I'm looking forward to it.
btransue
As usual, where the hell was I?
I was out drinking....absolutely in your honor SGF!
Well....it just so happens that your birth falls on my
anniversary...so I had to decide...SGF, wife, SGF, wife, SGF,
wife...ah...you were a hell of a close second, I want to tell
you!
I don't understand where everyone went though...I showed
up...sure it was 2 hours after you all left, but I'm
here...ready to rock...so where the heck?
We love you SGF...I think that's evident! Happy Birthday!!
Great tune Alimar...it was really an honor to be invited to
join in...especially since I'm pretty low on the talent food
chain around here. Really... a remarkable job to pull it all
off. You deserve a good Mow!
Einarus
Hope you have a nice year, Slimmie, you deserve it!
But this is without a doubt the best birthday song I've
heard...makes me wish I had been a part of it.
Happy birthday!

Everyday I heard this song over and over again as it was being made. I
think its so cool. Happy late birthday SlimGirlFat!

this is the perfect synergy of art and community. this is brilliant.
poodyglitz
Cool that there's such an active and caring community. Is this
some sort of "inner circle" thing, or does this go on all the time?
Loved the end section. Was Mystified responsible for that whole
part, or just the vocals?
sorry....but you lost me...this the 2nd song I've listen to here...is this
representative of the talent here?
Just wondering...no offense...

Very impressive.

I remembe looking at a radio and wondering how they got all those people inside that little box and imagined an announcer and a band inside on a little stage (me thinks I am revealing too much). But this song reminds me of the end result of a Magic Radio falling on the floor and busting into a zillion pieces of music.
