Description:
The first time I heard Walt Whitman’s line “I sing the body electric” was in a high school English class and I think I rewrote it on the spot. That would have been back in 1967, so this piece has had a long incubation. I took numerous stabs at broadening it into a full-fledged song of my own, but it wasn’t until a couple of years ago, when I started bouncing rhyming three-syllable adjectives back and forth with Roy Buckley (who developed the text for “The Tale of Genji”) that it seriously began taking shape. It has gone through several recorded versions since then; this is the first time I have tried producing a version with GarageBand.

Lyrics:
I PLAY THE GUITAR ELECTRIC
I play guitar electric
I sing the song artistic
I freight the weight aesthetic
I leak the reek ecstatic
These are the fantastic things I do
What more will it take to please you?

I mum the words laconic
I mock the mock ironic
I hum the tune moronic
I loose the juice colonic
These are the neurotic things I do
What more will it take to please you?

I tweak the cheek cosmetic
I dream the scheme horrific
I eat the meat venatic
I roll the pole magnetic
These are the quixotic things I do
What more will it take to please you?

I lick the lips necrotic
I flip the hips sclerotic
I crack the whip exotic
I suck on nips erotic
These are the psychotic things I do
What more will it take to please you?

I poke the eye cyclopic
I churn the urn canopic
I flex the limbs entropic
I snap sandals flipflopic
These are the heroic things I do
What more will it take to please you?

I tame the flame volcanic
I tempt the fate sarcastic
I wheeze the breeze asthmatic
I squeeze the knees orgasmic
These are the pathetic things I do
What more will it take to please you?

I chit the chat Socratic
I plot the proof erratic
I cube the root quadratic
I take the break sabbatic
These are the scholastic things I do
What more will it take to please you?

I hum the hymn harmonic
I tap the dance demonic
I stretch the truth elastic
I drop the hint bombastic
These are the dramatic things I do
What more will it take to please you?

Schletty's infectious.

Take a shot of rhythm & blues, quick.

Got a kick out of it Warren. Fun tune.

A shot of R&B? Ha-ha-hah. Does that mean I put it in the wrong category?
Thanks for leaving a comment, Snowdragon.

Fun!!! &mdash 08/11/05 - 10:29:38 AM
This is such a fun and happy song. Made me smile BIG
time. It has different sections, some which brings be back
to High School dance 1962 (I wasn't even born then, but
anyway), a Greatful Dead concert (outdoors), or an early
punkrock concert (let's say 1975-76 before trash and
hardcore punk) at the club The Marquee, London. It has a
great melody throughout. The lyrics goes well with the
song and are very funny (a bit of Monty Python). Perhaps
could need some refinements in the mix, I miss some
bass personally, but this is a great song Warren! Thanks!

Mikki - you've got me pegged - I went to my first high school dance in '62. Or
wait, was it '63? It's getting harder to remember this stuff. I also think you are
right that this song is rather sprawling, but that seems to be its nature. In the
effort of trying to be big and bold, refinement apparently got left out. Thanks for
commenting - it's appreciated.

Funny Lyrics &mdash 08/13/05 - 10:50:27 AM
This was very clever Warren. Made me laugh several times!
"Loose the juices colonic" ? First time I ever heard that
one. haha I really can't put my finger on it but the musical
backing comes across as harsh. Maybe a little too much
guitar? I'm usually not a big fan of them but a little synth
keyboard might work here. Overall good song though!

I guess the creative juices were flowing on this one, Bronco. I'm glad you
enjoyed the humorous parts. Adding some synth? That will be found in the
follow-up piece, titled "I pound the sound synthetic."

You know, I had to cut the song off somewhere!
I'll see you in the studio.

Skipped the light fandango.... &mdash 08/15/05 - 12:00:45 PM
I now know what that line means... you have
lyrically skipped the light fandango in this song,
turning verbal cartwheels on the floor ( to
paraphrase the old Procol Harum song).
Funny, infectious, and completely original.

A wonderful song.

And here I was worried I might be going a little too heavy on the fandango,
especially with me being more of a whirling polka person myself, so thanks for
putting my mind at ease. Back in college days, I lived with a couple of Procul
Harem devotees, so I am familar with the canon, and even took in a concert
once. "Blindly in the dark I groped/the keys left in my kaleidoscope" (or
something like that).

Indeed!

Novel lyrics and style. It's not a song I'd play multiple times
but it was cool to hear it. I haven't heard your stuff before
and I'm now interested to hear what else you do. Thanks.

Does humor belong in music? &mdash 08/16/05 - 08:10:58 AM
Yes, it does! And this is fun! Cheapness at its best. Very funny lyrics, very "heroic" of course! What more will it take to please YOU? Hahaha...

Big eye &mdash 12/22/05 - 01:14:36 PM
Warren - anyone who has written the line:

I poke the eye cypclopic (cycloptic?)

gets my thumbs up. Some of the other instrumentation other than guitar could come up, but, who cares, this brought a smile to my face after a looong day.
