Description:
This song is about a woman struggling with her addiction. Although I have no personal experience with this, I really feel like I can identify with her pain. The song just came out one day after I heard the expression "I may be lying in the gutter, but I can still see the stars." I thought it was very profound and worthy of being put to song. And of course, I am so very happy that Emily wanted to lend her beautiful, powerful voice to this song. Thanks once again, Emily!
Lyrics:
lost it, now I want recovery
all that I am
my words, my thoughts every piece of me
it’s been so long
I really wanna know the things inside my head
I bet it’s quite the diamond mine
I really wanna feel the things inside my breast
burning, churning, yearning...
I’m lying in the gutter
but I can still see the stars oh
I’m lying in the gutter
but I can still see the stars
teach me, everything I need to know
here take my hand
show me, the places where I need to go
it’s been so long
cuz I can’t quite remember when I first got lost
must have been a really good time
and I just can’t recall the day of my first fall
scary, very, merry...
I’m lying in the gutter
but I can still see the stars oh
I’m lying in the gutter
but I can still see the stars
this time, I won’t let go
this time, I’ve got to know
(baby) this time, it’s for real
so don’t lose your faith
baby don’t lose your faith

One of those songs.. &mdash 08/10/05 - 04:03:15 PM
I LOVE this song. Daphne sent this to me and I couldn't
wait to sing it. It is one of those songs that can mean
different things to different people. The melody is so
beautiful, and the lyrics are simple but effective. Thanks
so much for writing this!! [ Reply to This ]

Beautiful and moving &mdash 08/10/05 - 07:20:54 PM
Very power and poignant lyrics delivered with a lot of power
and emotion. You can really tell there's a lot of emotion in
both the lyrics and the vocals. beautiful work, both of you. [ Reply to This ]
Stunning &mdash 08/10/05 - 07:55:10 PM
Touching, poignant lyrics and extremely strong songwriting.
Emily- this was very powerfully delivered- a genre has not
been created that your voice wouldn't sound good in.
Wonderful song, ladies! Faved and D/L! [ Reply to This ]

Nice &mdash 08/12/05 - 02:53:54 AM
Great vocals - very strong. It does sound like something I
have heard before which is not a bad thing. I think that
the vocals could have less reverb/echo. It's used alot to
lift poor or weak vocals which in your case doesnt need to
be done. Maybe try a natural sounding vocals - it might
make it that little more intimate and personal! I would like
to be able to sing like that though - if I was a girl of
course! [ Reply to This ]
Looking up &mdash 08/12/05 - 09:32:31 AM
Very good song. Great performance Emily. Especially when
you go up higher in your range. My ears had a hard time with
the constant echo and the over-the-top reverb; it was not as
bad in headphones, but in my studio speakers it was kind of
oppressive and strangely mellow-dramatic, which the song
didn't need, since it is so dramatic all on its own. My ears
also wanted an instrumental ending, something to cover the
reverb tail of the vocal track, perhaps a recapitulation of the
intro piano. Really nice writing, Daphne. [ Reply to This ]

Daphne... &mdash 08/14/05 - 03:57:44 PM
...I'm a pushover for yearning...Yearning in a vocal,
yearning in a lyric....that sense of straining after
something not quite grasped or known but sensed to be
very near...
This song captures that. The lyric expresses that yearning
desire, and the vocal takes it off the page and into the
human heart.
Really strong vocal, Emily. I am impressed that you have
such a melodious voice, such excellent tone and pitch,
and you manage to deliver this song with restraint and
without a lot of ornament. You seem to have the singer's
gift of getting inside the song and knowing how it needs
to be sung, rather than using it as a vehicle for yourself...
Thanks for giving me the heads up, Daphne. I might have
missed it.
Lovely,

See the Stars &mdash 08/15/05 - 07:18:53 AM
Very nice song. Excellent production. Piano just a bit too
loud, should not challenge the singer to sing over it. Also,
there is no bridge between the verse and the chorus. It
seems to blend in so much together that it just becomes part
of the verse itself. I feel like I need a bit of a "signal" that it is
the chorus or, maybe, musically, this chorus just does not
work here and needs to be modified.
I thought that I might not like this tuen at first yet it grew on
me quickly and I actually listened to all of it. Just needs work
with that chorus and I am sure it would be quite stunning. [ Reply to This ]
Very moving. &mdash 08/16/05 - 12:02:49 AM
This ones a killer. Daphna, your words are beautiful,
beautiful, beautiful, made even more so by Emily's deeply
felt interpretation of the lyrics.
I did notice the echo and reverb a bit more in spots than
other, but it's a minor technical quibble. I only noticed it
on my second listen and that's when I was scrutinizing. I
think most listeners would just go along with the
wonderful music and powerful performance. I know I do.

Very moving. &mdash 08/16/05 - 05:14:40 PM
thanks ledebutant for your comments. I wasn't too sure either way about the
reverb - it is the reverb Emily gave it when she recorded her vocals and I do kind
of like it, but maybe it's a tad too much. We also thought it was a good way to
cover up the unfortunate background noise a little bit. So glad you enjoyed it
though. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]
Nice one &mdash 08/16/05 - 08:17:04 AM
Very tasty piano playing. Reminds me of a friend of mine who`s singing-style is exactly the same. Perhaps a little bit too much reverb on the voice, but overall a very nice tune with good lyrics and a nice feel.

Beautiful! &mdash 08/26/05 - 10:44:56 AM
-Excellent melody and intriging lyrics! Daphna your piano sounds powerful, I really like it. I don't mind some of the reverb on the voicals, maybe in the chorus - and maybe cut back on verse. Sometimes to much reverb looses its sense of honesty .
-Emily, you have an amazing voice and you definitely took possesion of this song! Excellent job on both parts!!!! [ Reply to This ]

voice &mdash 01/10/06 - 04:20:00 PM
your voice is beautiful, and the instrumental fits nicely. there's some spots especially near the beginning where the singing seems a bit fast and it takes away from the emotion a little. the lyrics are rather well done. a good track. [ Reply to This ]

What a beautiful song. Beautifully performed and recorded/produced.
I was directed to your song - and so happy that I was - because I had recently posted a quote in a forum thread that must the original quote that your chorus refers to.
%u201CWe are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.%u201D - by Oscar Wilde.
I'm sure Mr. Wilde would be thrilled with your interpretation of his words.
Well done! [ Reply to This ]
