Bombs on the Underground

Description
Been sitting on this groove for months, finally got off my duff when Blaine announced the Virtual Garage's Reggae/Ska special (8/12/05 on KSVY/ksvy.org) - with that impetus and the recent attacks in London going through my head, I started working out lyrics/vocals for this song. So far, it's all me except for the drums which as usual for me these days are Drums on Demand. I ultimately want to get some soul-like "descant" parts that sing "around" the melody/lyrics, but have not yet heard back from the person I contacted. I even played w/ the idea of supplying those myself using GB's pitch shift stuff, but I'd rather have the real thing. For now, here's the current state. I'd love to get some collab going w/ this one and take it even further.

Lyrics
Bombs on the underground
Hate above ground
Planes fly into buildings
and people die

I'm not here to tell you
I have any answers
I'm only here to
ask you why...

--chorus--
We have to find a way
to live together peacefully
'cause if we don't then hate
will kill us all eventually

you can't get into heaven
killing other people
all that you accomplish
is spreading hate

We need to realize that
we need to change the equation
I only hope that we can
before it's too late

-chorus-

I kill your family
because you killed my family
I kill your family
then you kill mine

can't we all figure out
it's just a big circle
going round & round
'till we're all out of time

-chorus-

Good lyrics!
Sad story of course! I like the song! Bass could be a little bit tighter, I think. Overall OK!

diggin' the groove
love the organ/guitar/bass mix on this. really well
produced! the vocal difference between the verse &
chorus was a bit startling for me at first but grew on me
by the end. lyrics are extremely well written & socially
relevant in the great reggae tradition. well done! 8988!

Groovin' reggae....
How refreshing to hear a reggae song. And this
one definitely got me bopping and moving in my
chair. The bass and guitar (I reallly like) just drive
this. Really done well. As said by others, the
sentiment in the lyrics are never old and always in
need of hearing. The chorus melody line doesn't
totally work for me. I need to listen again. Don't
get me wrong. I like it. I think I want it to have
more punch, to grab my attention more... maybe
ascending rather than descending melodically on
the last phrase. Minor.

Thanks for putting this one up.

Find a way
I think the bass is fine. The vocals in the verses are too
subdued, especially with my big Sherwood floor speakers.
The choruses are perfect in volume and presence. Very
pro sounding. Your voice is quite soulful and expressive.
The ending is not what I expected, though. Maybe extend
it a bit and wrap some vocal cries around the
instrumentation. Reggae rocks!

Thanks to all of you
who've commented and voted.
I'm a bit short on time this week for replies, being on the
road (typing this in a hotel) for a vacation.

I really do plan on fleshing this out a bit more w/ some
additional (female) vox - and if I can get the right person
interested, some lead guitar. I'll re=post when it's done,
but wanted togo ahead and post what was being played
on VG.

Solid Construction.
The foundations of this tune are great. Everything is levelled
nicely. And how can you say anything bad about the
message!

Something about the vocals didn't sit right with me... i think
the chorus felt a bit laggy. Perhaps a slight tempo shift
would fix this up...

Good song, great message.

nice stuff
I like the idea.
I also agree with I.G.M.

Have you listened to any bands on the ONU sound label?
this piece kinda reminds me of the band London
Underground. (circa mid 80's & one of my favourite bands)
May I humbly suggest some experimentation with effects
on the drums to give the lyrics added impact, just check
out some of London underground's stuff (or ANY of the
recordings on the ON-U sound label)
Rock on!

right place
That organ lick is absolutely inviting. I can see where you've been waiting for the right place to use it, and I think you've found a perfect spot with this contemporary subject.

Nice
Can't argue with the message. I like the music and vocals. The organ is
especially nice. This mix is good, I just wish the chorus sounded
(musically) more like the rest of the song.-JAC

Cool lyrics
The eye for an eye message is very cool and very relavent in places like Isreal. I really like the music, its very well composed. I would have fattened the bass myself, but I like fat bass esp dub reggae bass. The track so still very good though, well done.
