Description:
A song about life in general. I got a Mandolin last night. I gift from my girlfriend. I've never played the instrument before but picked up on the strings pretty quick.

M

Lyrics:
[ down and up ]

love is all that matters when you're down
you may not realize it in your dark room
you may look at yourself as a sad clown
when you're down there's no up, and there's no future

down
up

when you're down there's no up
when you're up you can't climb down

music and flowers, colors and love
doesn't matter to you at all when you're down
water and air, earth and freedom
doesn't matter to you when you're afraid

This is off kilter... &mdash 08/12/05 - 02:04:30 PM
...and occaisionally out of tune... but it works in your
favor and gives this tune a nervous energy. I really
love the way you bend the notes! The plucky
mandolin adds a rich backdrop.

I just felt this song needed some "edge" so I actually did two
tracks on the verse vocals, one of them are tuned down
about a third which may give it an illusion of being slightly
un-tuned. I just felt it made the song more interesting!? :)
I like the "nervous energy" comment, that's me! This was my
first dance on the Mandolin, so I guess I was a bit nervous...
Thanks for listening and comment!

You're a better man than I am... &mdash 08/12/05 - 09:19:25 PM
...I got a madolin in April for my birthday and have so far had
no success in producing anything coherent from it, and
you've come up with this in a day! Your versitility continues
to amaze me as does your creativeness. The mandolin gives
the tune a really upbeat feel. Musically and lyrically, this has
a real "feel good" sound that I really like. I look forward to
what else you'll come up wth the mandolin.

one of the best yet &mdash 08/13/05 - 04:35:11 AM
How do you keep coming with these things?

This is utterly fantastic.

The mandolin is becoming a real favourite among
Macjammers, and you can see why.

This reminds me of psychadelic pre-britpop UK alternative
like The Dylans.

Great job picking up and putting together such a nice piece
with the Mandolin. Particularly like that you spread the sound
duing the chorus sections and brought it back to center for
the remainder.

jgurner > I am not a better man, I just picked up the
Mandolin quicker! :) My versatility costs plenty, I am at a
point where music has become a desease. A must. Work
is lacking behind. I soon has to find a way to reach out
with my music, further than MACJAMS - I am sure I am not
the only one here struggeling with art vs. real life
however... Thank you for being a fan of my music, it
means a lot!

eltopo > I have no idea how I come up with anything I
come up with. A simple way of describing it would be, it
comes to me!? Brittish pre-pop? You know, I actually
had, or got, Ecco and the Bunnymen in my head for a little
while doing this song.

nispter > Thank you! I am getting somewhat better at
using my tools with every song, and I am sure better at
mixing my songs better as well. It is still, and hopefully
will alwsys reamin a struggle however! :)

Sweet! &mdash 08/18/05 - 08:42:55 PM
Man, do you sleep, or are you unemployed?....you're really cranking out the tunes, but I am enjoying it all! This is a really catchy tune. Kinda what you might get if you threw Stipe and Joy Division in a blender with a mandolin and a cherry on top. I'm so jealous that you can pick up a new instrument and do something like this.
Keep'em coming!
