Description:
This track is a wee bit different (!) to what I’ve already posted and appears because a couple of MacJammers have expressed interest in hearing some of my fiddle playing…

This track was written about 5 years ago – I was attending a Highland fiddle workshop on the Isle of Skye (Scotland) and our tutor suggested that we all tried to come up with a tune for the last day. For some bizarre reason, rather than something in the Scottish Highland style, I came up with something which sounded a bit as though it were Eastern European Gypsy music.

The track is played here by Las Bragas (one of the groups I play with) and was recorded in one take with no overdubs. The band are Jim: percussion; Gaz: bass; Ed: Guitar; Daz: drums; and myself on fiddle.

I won’t bore you with how I chose the name, it really isn’t that interesting.

This is great fun! Wonderful fiddling, great tune, Las
Bragas kept the pace nicely. You mention that the "track
was written" 5 years ago... was it recorded & mixed then,
or did you just recently re-record and remix? It sounds
very clean, and each instrument is well-mic'ed. 8s across
for a great tune, great virtuosity, great recording!

Hmmm... are you up for a violin collaboration? :-)

Drakonis

Thanks for your very positive feedback - the band's been playing this track for a
few years but we recorded it 18 months ago.

Definitely up for a collaboration - I haven't put fiddle onto a track on my own
computer yet but I'm hoping to very soon now that I've worked out how to do it
(LTD was recorded on a friend of a friend's who has lots of gear and seems to
know what he's doing)

Fiddlers welcome! &mdash 08/15/05 - 11:49:53 AM
This is so lively, so fun. Has a Klezmer feel to it. Delightful.
Having a fiddler available for collaboration will be fantastic.
Thank you for joining and sharing!

really sensational playing. Wow. Gobsmacked.

Never did understand that devil/fiddle connection but it pops up all over the
place - of course my fiddle is made of gold! (I wish...)

Were you ever connect with the Everyman? I used to work behind the bar there -
lots of parties - had a rollicking time.

music of the heart &mdash 08/15/05 - 05:01:00 PM
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful piece here!

There is nothing like a "live" instrument, like your fiddle,
to convey emotion. I was dancing in the aisles listening to
this tune -- it has such wonderful energy, and the drum/
guitar accompaniment is very organic to the whole.

This piece has such a simple structure, easily identified
with...a universal "dance" theme of celebration -- and in a
minor key, yet! This is the push and pull of klezmer and
Eastern European music. All the emotions rolled into one!

I look forward eagerly to more things like this from you.
My only very minor suggestion for future songs like this
would be to raise the recording levels on the fiddle ever-
so-slightly, maybe give it a subtle touch of reverb, let it
shine forth even more brightly.

Wonderful playing, performance and recording on this!

I like it when minor keys rock (and for that matter when major keys are
melancholy - Richard Thompson's great at that). No one's ever said that stuff
about this tune before - many thanks, I'll listen to it in a new light from now on!

Good one &mdash 08/16/05 - 07:35:59 AM
That`s a nice tune but I don`t like to hear the fiddle playing so close to the bassline. In my opinion it would be more interesting to maka a clear seperation between the two instruments, because of the tonal width. The gypsy touch is a nice idea, well played, but doesn`t sound half as much as the native players. Don`t get me wrong: Overall a pretty good tune!

Thanks - pleased you liked it.

Perhaps you're right about the bass - Las Bragas hardly ever practise so these
things never get ironed out. Likewise we have a fairly irreverent take on world
music - so authenticity tends to take second place to having a good time (albeit
in a rather singular Las Bragas sort of way).

This is music. Alive... Ethinic... Festive... and so totally
well done! As Tobin said, how great to have a fiddler
here at macjams. Do you do any Celtic/Irish tunes?

I really enjoyed your fiddle playing, not sure about the bass
taking your melody line with you sometimes though - bass is
a bit loud really. But great to hear proper musiscians playing
so well.

song actually deserves it! Great tone, melody! Technical
profficion combined with passion is an unbeatable
combination.

Wow, it's got my foot stomping away and my wife is hopping
around like a gypsy dancer.. I love this stuff. I love Skye also:
this is not evocative of that enchanted Isle but of the Baltics
maybe??

Welcome aboard QL. Glad you and your wife enjoyed this tune - not sure what
style it is really (probably a bit of an amalgam of all the various things I listen to,
I'm very keen on klezmer and Eastern European styles... could be Baltic even).
Obviously not a lot of Skye in there (other than to reflect the fabulous time I was
having!).

A simple sound is exceeded the race and extends to the
