Description:
From Tom Atwood:
I have always found this quote from St. Teresa to be very calming, and for me, very true. It is actually a translation from Spanish by H. W. Longfellow. The quote is St. Teresa, the music is all Mystified. She not only wrote and sang the melody, she charted the guitar chords for me. In this piece, I am once again merely playing along with one of my favorite people. Thanks for this, Cat.

From Mystified:
This song came about quite unexpectedly.
In the process of collaborating on "Morning Walk," Tom shared one of his favorite inspirational quotes: a verse from St Teresa of Avila. In the days that followed, I kept thinking about that quote and how it would fit nicely into a song.
I recorded a melody line and then added some accompanying arpeggios in one of the software instruments as a guide to the chords, then sent the file to Tom and asked if he would like to accompany it.

Thankfully, he did -- and so beautifully! :)

We both agreed that this piece should be kept simple (for this version, anyway), and so it has been.
Thank you so very much, Tom--both for the inspiring quote and the beautiful accompaniment for this song.

Lyrics:
Alone God Sufficeth

Let nothing disturb thee,
Nothing affright thee.
All things are passing
God never changeth.

Patient endurance
Attaineth to all things;
Who God possesseth
In nothing is wanting.
Alone God sufficeth.

~St Teresa of Avila

Lovely in its simplicity.
There's no need for some fancy orchestra - it's perfect as

The truth about Mysti &mdash 08/17/05 - 01:30:50 PM
The truth about Mystified is that she is, actually, a bit of a
genius. Yes, she has a beautiful voice. But, more and
more, I am beginning to realize, Cat, that your talent is
spread all over the place. Your talents.

I didn't send the verse from St. Teresa to you thinking it
would be a collaboration. It was part of a conversation. I
never really imagined that this quote could be put to
music in a way that was listenable and fresh. And then, a
few days later, you sent me a file. Like a bomb. A
stunningly beautiful bomb.

Okay, I'm sure no one wants to hear all this slobbering.
Let me just say thanks again for asking me to play along.
This piece reaches deep inside and grabs hold and never
lets go. Wonderful!

B e a u t i f u l ! ! ! &mdash 08/17/05 - 01:44:41 PM
A wonderful composition, beautifully and heartfelt sung
by you Mystified! I am so happy it just unexpectedly came
to you!

I am also very happy to find this kind o music here!

I also find it impressing how you two people have done it
so well together. Ok, I see how you've done it, but Toms
docility in following a recorded material again shows to be
amazing! It sounds like you are playing it togheter.

I'll do as Tom use to do and declare my ratings:
10-10-10-10!

Cheers you two!

Very Nice &mdash 08/17/05 - 01:46:20 PM
I like the melismatic phrasing with the modern chord structure. It's like Gregorian Chants meets folk music. Nice recording, singing and playing. I'd like to hear a little more character out of the Alvarez, it seems somewhat muted (I have an Alvarez also and love the sound); it sounds like it's being played with no finger nails. Good job!

Sacred words... &mdash 08/17/05 - 02:06:29 PM
sung beautifully and reverently by Mysti..... I am taking
another moment's pause... so powerful, reaching into
my heart. And Tom, you perform as the perfect
accompaniement guitarist for this vocal performance.
Tasteful and restrained, so sensitive to Mysti's singing.
And so well played. Thanks to both of you.

nice! &mdash 08/17/05 - 07:11:07 PM
amazing guys, great collaboration, actually awakens a want
for spirituality in me I assumed I buried a while back, but
that has nothing to do with this song, this is awesome guys
and keep em coming!

Not simply a song &mdash 08/17/05 - 07:57:38 PM
Of course the reference to Taize's canons is more than
apparent, starting from the lyrics. Correspondence (more
than this, spiritual identity) of music and text is really good,
and also harmonization. It's a shame, in my humble opinion,
that the voice pitch is somehow subtly lacking here and
there, because the melody is beatiful.

Wonderful &mdash 08/18/05 - 12:01:40 AM
I have to say Mysti, I really do enjoy you most when you
do what really seems to easily flow in your blood. I get a
more personable feel from you doing operatic pieces and
it always feels more true. Not that I don't enjoy your other
works, because certainly, we'll proove this later. Mostly, I
believe that it's because I've truly come to like you as a
person/artist and this has allowed me the opportunity to
be closer to, and really appreciate opera in ways that
previously had not existed for me. Very nice to hear you
singng this. Quite frankly, singing, dosen't seem like a big
enough word for what you do...

And Tom... 'simply', and 'beautiful' are two words that I
have come to associate with anything that you do.

Thanks to the both of you for putting this piece out to
share.

This is so beautiful. Beautiful voicing, Myst. Tom, your
guitar work perfectly complements the sung prayer. The
pacing is synchronous and well measured. Thanks for
doing this.

elegantly simple &mdash 08/18/05 - 07:14:35 AM
Cat, in my opinion this is one of your best vocal
performances, strikingly delivered... soothing. Very nice
writing for voice and guitar!

Tom, you deserve a lot of credit too, for the inspiration, and
for playing with great emotion and richness.

Gorgeous picture too, where did that come from?

Thank you &mdash 08/18/05 - 11:08:01 AM
I'm going to just respond to all who have so thoughtfully listened and left comments so far and say "thank you," sincerely, for your observations, your comments and your encouragement.

It is hard to take credit for music which seems to settle upon you 'out of the blue' as this piece did to me. The quote itself was certainly part of that inspiration, and I wanted to present what I 'heard' in the best way that I could, fully aware of my limitations as a vocalist.
So, your comments are both humbling and appreciated.

Tom, once again, I just want to recognize your marvelous accompaniment on this song. It is not easy to follow a vocal track, as you did. But, as Curry said, it sounded like we were there performing the song together. Thank you, thank you, for bringing your talent and your sensitivity to this piece.

wonderfully expressive &mdash 08/18/05 - 05:07:18 PM
Your voice soars in the heavens, dipping through banks of
clouds, high above the earth.

Your vocal capabilities are shining forth with increasing
strength and beauty with each song that you do. It is so
gratifying to witness your growing confidence here.

The guitar accompaniment is simple and perfect for this
tune. I particularly like the rolled chords in the latter part,
as the intensity of this song builds to its conclusion.

You should definitely get this song published. It would be
a "hit" in just about any church.

Really lovely song. I think you guys made the right choices
in keeping it simple. Excellent singing, Mysti. And Tom, the
guitar part is perfect, great recording too. Not much else to
yap on about. It's lovely and skillfully done.

Top notch &mdash 08/21/05 - 09:30:39 AM
Very accomplished and very beautiful. I think the simple
arrangement is perfect for it ... it allows the song to
occupy its own space and really resonate. Lovely.
Cat, your voice sounds stunning.

This reminds me of those... &mdash 08/22/05 - 12:25:38 PM
...renditions of the songs of Hildegard of Bingen that were
out and popular years ago...

Also reminds me of the non-Gregorian chant songs used in
the liturgy of the hours by the Trappist monks at St. Joseph's
Abbey, where I sometimes do a weekend retreat...

Nicely realized composition. You didn't say what cathedral
you used...

The Song Art.... &mdash 08/22/05 - 01:23:15 PM
used for this (as a few have asked in their comments) is of the Mildred B Cooper Memorial Chapel in Bella Vista, Arkansas.
I did add mention to the song notes after posting, but it's probably a bit lost among the other notes.

And a warm and sincere ''thank you' to all of you have have left comments recently. Some poetic, some simple yet sincere....all are greatly appreciated, as well as the time that you've taken to listen carefully to this song.
Thank you.
