Description:
THE FINAL MIXED AND MASTERED VERSION OF THIS TRACK IS AVAILABLE ON MY DEBUT ALBUM, "SOMETHING".

http://www.simig.com/records/artists/peter/peter.htm

THIS VERSION IS CLOSE TO FINAL BUT NOT THE FINAL.

Back in January (New Years Day) I did a short sketch version of this concept that I had up on MJ for a while. So it may look familiar, but it has grown and changed tremendously since then.

I don't know what genre suits this.

All parts were performed or programmed myself. Only one loop used (AMG Ved. Birayani percussion). The sound effects were created by flipping through the pages of an edition of Gray's Anatomy, applying various effects on two different tracks and mixing between them.

Photo of "Betweeness" graffiti taken in dark Roman alley about 2002.

Lyrics:
Where is the time
there's nothing better here
In some buried dream
I'd found a new year

And all we can feel
is all we can say
the strength I have used
I took from you

With every breath
we open doors
and we feel it in the air
we whisper evermore

Hardware:
G5 w/2gigs, ART Tube PAC, M-Audio Firewire 410, Audio Technica MB4000C mic, bamboo flute, Gray's Anatomy (paperback edition)

Software:
GB2,JP4

It's not fair, Peter... &mdash 08/21/05 - 09:27:35 PM
...some of can't even afford the paperback edition of
Gray's Anatomy...let alone the CLASSIC paperback edition
with the gold top pick-ups and maple rag low acid paper
so obviously used here...

Hell, man, this is amazing...

You are letting yourself go with your voice...this is an
astonishing vocal...the writing, the harmonizing...it's as
good as it gets...It's its own thing entirely...

PLUS you've got an excellent graphic...

I'm the long-winded version of speechless...

I almost never do this, but:

10-10-10-10

Thanks, Ed. It's a real joy to sing this.

I have a special edition of Gray's Anatomy that goes up to 11.

The way you hit the high notes and make it sound cool.
Seems a haunted feel for a movie or like in a civil war zone
that has been haunted for ages. But of course that is
probably the total opposite of what it should be. It is just
that you are so dang creative that you can make people
gather all kinds of mental images with your great musical
talent.

High scores for sure

well enough with what I was going for.

Wow &mdash 08/21/05 - 09:50:55 PM
Your vocals on this are amazing. There are so many
different vocals textures weaving in and out. It seems your
voice is getting a more moody and etherial sound about it
the more you record. It goes perfect with the bamboo
flute, which already has such a mysterous and dreamy
sound. I love the way this builds and morphs, especially
when the percussion starts to come in.

The entire peice has a very dreamlike quality about it. Not
necessarily nightmarish, but definitely something that
would cause you to wake up in the middle of the night
and wonder whay you'd eaten to cause this dream.

Bravo.

Wow &mdash 08/22/05 - 01:28:53 AM
Thanks, jgurner. I'm always experimenting with my voice. I've found the
bamboo flute and my voice pair really well and I can get them to sort of merge
together and resonate in interesting ways.

certain eerie feeling in the air &mdash 08/21/05 - 10:10:20 PM
it's eerie how you can always skillfully manipulate loops, sounds, and words to create a certain ambiance (and even a sense of anticipation or mystery) out of just sound waves...it's like a new form of synergy...i like the middle eastern influence in the music...your vocal range is amazing too...almost cathartic to hear every breath, whisper, and note get purged from your vocal cords and linger in the air (so much betweeness that separate each vocal line)

Thanks, Mikki. Nicely worded comment too. I do love doing this music thing.
Music like this is really liberating for me.

Strange Juxtaposition &mdash 08/21/05 - 10:55:56 PM
Peter, Your vocals are powerful and seem almost
anquished but yet as I read the lyrics they seem fairly
positive? I'm puzzled on the feelings I get from this one.
As usual a brilliant production job with great sounds and
instruments coming at us from all directions. Only thing I
could compare it to would be Jim Morrison doing the
poem about the Spanish jettisoning the horses in mid
ocean. Perhaps you are jettisoning some horses from your
mind?

Thanks, Bronco. I'll have to go listen to that Jim Morrison track. It sounds
familiar but I'm not sure if I know it.

But, wow, what a journey!

Fantastic use of your voice, sound effects, instruments. An amazing journey for sure.
Thanks for letting me tag along on this one....

Grazie, M. I'm glad you came along for the ride. When we get there we all have
to reconcile our expectations one way or another with reality. Somewhere in-
between, judgement is suspended.

Perhaps you should fit a siren or something!

Peter, you know how much I like your music, and this is
no exception! Your mic/preamp setup is wonderful (or
maybe its just your astonishing voice!). I just love the
creativity on this - its just so successfully outside the
square! Love it, love it love it!!

Thanks so much for posting.

Poe soundtrack &mdash 08/22/05 - 10:24:29 AM
This piece really has an Edgar Allen Poe feel to it...even
the title. Very dark, rather creepy -- good vocal effects
and musical pacing. I particularly like the celeste-type
chords at the end.

Very nice ending, btw. Endings are the most difficult part
of a song to do -- you pull this one off very well!

Poe soundtrack &mdash 08/22/05 - 11:45:58 PM
Thanks, Cameron. Wow, Edgar Allan Poe as a comparison! That's a great and
unusual compliment. I'm love his writings.

Endings. There is a great satisfaction in getting it to end properly.

Really soaring and beautiful. It's also ... well... kinda
creepy. Very Poe-ish indeed. The latter half with the
percussion really fascinated me.
Your vocals very dead-on!
Yet another terriffic piece from you.

I was expecting a fun, poppy tune... but...

How creepy, haunting, brooding.... get my point. This is
audio artistry. This could easily be the opening credits to an
shamylan movie.

So many interesting facets to this song. Well done!

Fav'd!

Thanks, _nder. Yeah, I love recording sounds for effects and textures. It's a
great way to create some of the most interesting effects. And if you can be
portable you can get samples from all sorts of unexpected places. Break out
that mic and have at it.

Awesome &mdash 08/25/05 - 01:21:27 AM
Well the last album of hers that i nabbed second hand was "the singer" and it's just her and a piano and her voice doing old blues and religious songs. It's pretty good. Litanies of Satan is just two crazy long tracks, her first album, devastating sound. la Serpenta Canta is a great album, fairly new, Do you take this man, is a bit older but just as good. those are some good places to start as she has a pretty big catalogue.

I have a feeling you might also like the latest John Cale album

Really engaging big stuff, one of my favorite performers besides Lydia Lunch.

Once again awesome track here

...I forgot to leave a comment here before... you do a
pretty damn good job in replicating the Baaba Maal
tune from "Passion"...is that what it is? Anyway, your
voice seems to channel the supernatural in
areas...that is, it gets pretty freekin' incredible. I
respect that you are willing to try new things and
continue to push yourself creatively...!

[ Reply to This ]
oh yeah... &mdash 08/26/05 - 08:45:59 AM
Thanks, Mr Nutz. Yeah, I was influenced a lot in my singing by that album.
There wasn't any intention to make it like Passion from its inception but it just
evolved that way by nature of that singing style. Singing like that actually makes
my skelleton resonate.

That book works a charm! Good voice, Peter. Very
interesting music - reminds me a lot of - actually, a hell
of a lot - of PASSION by Peter Gabriel. I guess you must
have a copy?? Good stuff!

Not nearly as interesting as your other songs. You have a
unique sound that stands out from the crowd. This song is
dull in comparison. Your person/voice did not come through
like I was hoping.

Thanks, Thequalitykiller. I'm glad you like it so much. By the way, there is no
band; it's all just me playing/singing/producing all the parts. But I'm happy that
it sounds like the effort of a band to you. Obviously, I'd need a band to perform
this live on stage.

The use of the book was brilliant. It almost sounded like
galloping horses at times. This is a haunting song, full of
drama and angst. When the drums and the orchestral
sounds start, it's almost like Act II, thrusting into another
world. Very dreamlike and chilling and thrilling.
