Description:
I just wanted to have a little fun, so I put this song through Vinyl to get that "Really old blues record" feel. I think it sounds kinda cool, so I thought I'd share.

You can find the original version on my song list. Kudos go to Bronco for this song.

Lyrics:
You pay me a nickel when I'm worth more than a dime
Why you keeping me down all the time
I sweat and I slave to give you what I got
And you slap me down, leaving me to rot
It ain't fair. Life ain't fair. But what am I gonna do?

Heavy burdens on my shoulders
Get these weights right offa me
Dangerous fire around me smolders
It ain't the way the world oughta be
But it is. It just is. It always is.

You drag my name through the muck and the mire
Why are you hating? Why do you never tire?
I never did you a single wrong
And you slap me down and silence my song.
It ain't fair. Life ain't fair. But what am I gonna do?

::bridge::

Heavy burdens on my shoulders
Get these weights right offa me
Dangerous fire around me smolders
It ain't the way the world oughta be
But it is. It just is. It always is.

You make me promises and feed me big dreams
But nothing you say is ever what it seems
I fly on a thought, heaven bound
And you slap me down, leave me on the ground
It ain't fair. Life ain't fair. But what am I gonna do?

Heavy burdens on my shoulders
Get these weights right offa me
Dangerous fire around me smolders
It ain't the way the world oughta be
But it is. It just is. It always is.

I use to own that 45!! &mdash 08/26/05 - 10:09:59 AM
Great blues collaboration you two. And what a
fun concept. The entire song is vintage 50's blues.
Bronco's guitar and harmonica are so good as the
envelope for Joanna's "I've been singing too long in
too many bars" voice. Thanks for another great
tune for the collection.

Thanks, Jack! Funny how lo-tech sound adds a whole new dimension, isn't it?
Love the description of the vocals - lol!

What a Holiday &mdash 08/26/05 - 08:34:47 PM
So refreshing, this throw back. All the right moves in the
mix. And nice rhymes too. Fine, fine.

Thank you, mullet! Most of the credit goes to Bronco. He did such an amazing
job with the music and the mix.

voices from the past &mdash 08/27/05 - 06:28:35 AM
You and Tom both sound like ghosts from some other era
in recording history. It's not just the "vinyl" fx, it is your
voices. Tom's harmonies have a wonderful desperate
quality, and his instruments are singing through the
crackles and scratches. Excellent piece, Joanna.

9-9-9-9

voices from the past &mdash 08/27/05 - 07:37:29 AM
Thank you, Tom -- an interesting way of putting it: ghosts. We were both
trying to capture that sound of yesteryear. Bronco did a particularly amazing
job on his parts.

Great vintage blues &mdash 08/28/05 - 07:05:43 AM
Thank you, Steve! Funny how, now that everything is digitally pure,
sometimes one can long for the good old days of myriad imperfections.

You know... &mdash 08/28/05 - 10:07:05 AM
...when I went back for my Bachelor's degree in 1999, one of the classes I was forced to take was a music class. The lesser of evils was a Jazz Appreciation class. I kept thinking about how much that was going to suck. Well, the class lived up to its name. I came out of that class with an appreciation for a genre I probably would have otherwise ignored.
What does that have to do with this song? Well, this song sounds so genuinely from the era, it instantly brought me back to that class.
Long story short..... = Very good job. lol

You know... &mdash 08/29/05 - 10:27:28 PM
Thank you, Doof! That's a really cool story. Amazing how classes can turn a
person from "eh" to "yeah!" I had more than one that did the same thing for
me. I'm also happy that our bid for authenticity worked!

Sounds great &mdash 08/28/05 - 03:52:08 PM
Groovy effect ... gives it quite a different atmosphere from
the previous version. Very nice.

Any more collabs planned between you two? You're a
great team.

Thank you, Rebsie! Yes, Bronco and I are working on another song, though
I'm the one holding it up right now. I should be able to work on it in a couple
of days, though, so woo hoo!

So Old Skool &mdash 10/10/05 - 08:12:46 PM
I would have thought this a found gem if I didn't know better. Way cool
lyrics. Way old time. Love this one. In a couple places it loses the old
feeling, but for the most part if you burned this to vinyl and told me it
was 30 years old I would believe.

Of course I still believe in Santa.

So Old Skool &mdash 10/28/05 - 04:29:44 AM
Thank you, CJ! That vinyl plug-in is really cool for songs like this. Add
Bronco's amazing talent and a genre like the blues and it's time to fulfill a
little fantasy for me. I always wanted to write and sing a real blues song and
Bronco gave me that chance.

So authentic... &mdash 01/05/06 - 06:50:47 AM
...I kept expecting it to skip...

Like one of those Chess recordings you might look up after hearing
the Stones do something as a cover...

It really sounds like it was done with one mic and one or two takes in a
single room...

Vocals nice, guitar and harmonica nice... All around good...

And it's fun, too...
