Description:
(Praxis Pietatis Melica 1668)

Recorded in my tiled bathroom! . . .huh!

This tune was very challenging for me. Not so much in the playing, but in the recording. I went to great lengths to get the very best recording I could. I say great, for me it was a big effort. But for some of the pros on this site it could of been a piece of cake.

What I mean by that, is that I first went out and bought a hub to extend into my tiled marble bathroom I installed years ago. I needed the hub to make my extensions longer so I could record there.

But to make a long story short, it didn't work, the Windows hub didn't work so I went and bought a mac usb hub and I found out that you loose power with a hub when you are doing audio. So I just used a longer usb cord I bought, it fit from the bathroom to my studio.

Again, things worked so much better not having the hub. When I tried it time and time again the mouse refused to work, I couldn't delete things and the list goes on and on. . .

So here it is, I finally recorded with two condenser mics plugged into my USB Tascam interface. I did that because in the usb tascam 122 there is a much better pre-amp than my noisy Berhinger Mx 1602a.

Lots of blood, sweat and tears in recording on this one!

Hope you like it:)

Bill

Hardware:
No hub, thank goodness I was smart to get rid of it for recording.

chops and created a beautiful song. Sonically very good.
Can't say enough for the bathroom tile!

Thanks Perc
It was a great challenge for me to do this. Because I had such problems. I
didn't know that a hub can reap such havock to recording. But now I sure
know about those things. Some Radio Shack and Apple Sales people that sells
hubs just probably don't do much recording. But when i phoned up my local
music store, they sure understood right away. It really reassured me to get
that hub out of the line up. The other problem was to get long enough cords
that would reach. Being that I only had 10 foot cords I was worried. But being
that my studio is not that far way, it worked.

I put my interface (122 Tascam usb) on the marble floor and my keyboard on
the sink. My had to put my boom pole and mic and my other normal stand n
there as well.

One thing I am amazed with is that I don't receive nearly the noise!
I can't really understand why. I don't know if putting my two mics on separate
tracks or getting my guitar away from my G5 tower lessened the noise. But
something happened. Just not totally sure what did it. But that room must of
generated noise from the tower I guess. Even though I don't really hear the
tower sound on previous recordings. I know I still used the same Tascam usb
122 interface.

It was worth it... &mdash 08/29/05 - 04:58:41 AM
...You got a lovely sound here....

Time to change over the business to "doing acoustic
recording treatments"...

You got a lovely sound...not too harshly or metallicly
reverb-y, but nice...especially when you switch to
harmonics...

You've still got those nice, clean trills that sound lute-like,
yet also a pacing and sense of time that at points sounds
almost like Gregorian chant but then slips more toward
the Renaissance...

For all the frustration you describe, this tune has a nice
sense of ease to it... It ends up being very beautiful...

Thanks Ed, your discription is very nice. I love to produce the lingering sounds
after the cord is hit or note is hit and I thing the bathroom is my best place to
get that sound in my house :) I just hope that the kids don't turn the water on in
the other bathroom or washer cause I can hear it and it effects the recording.
Got to make sure I don't take over the bathroom though :)
Got to keep the wife happy :)

At times it was very frustrating because I didn't know the hub blocks of audio
capabilities. In a way it was a hard lesson learned.

Thanks!

Admirable! &mdash 08/29/05 - 02:42:05 PM
Really happy you got such a good result after all the
hazzle! You got a really beautiful sound at the end! As a
listener I feel it was worth all the work you had, if one may
say so of anothers job :)

Admirable that you made it! I have at times thought about
givin bathroom recording a try but throwed in the towel at
the mere thought of the arrengements involved.

Also I sense like you're gradually getting such a good
hand with that guitar! Sound like it flows so easy for you,
even those difficult drills. Sounds like you own the
instrument. You decide, not the guitar!

No harsh sound, which is really enviable, I think that is a
most difficult things to achive on steel stringed acoustic.
Especially since youre at the same time are getting a very
powerful tone at places!

Admirable!

It is a lot of fun to hear something better than I have ever recorded anything.

Yes, yes and so many amends to that one.
It was sure a challanged because I had so many cords and gizmos to deal
with!

I better own Betsy, she cost me enough :)

A real big help is the Santa Cruz companies craftsmanship and recording in
the bathroom to really bring out the flavor of how well built "Betsy" really is!

I just can't get the sustains that I can in my little studio, I am not sure if I will
every be content now recording near my G5.

Bill, this is just beautiful!! The added resonance of those

surely one of your most perfectly executed tunes so far. If

be there.

In the age of downloading I sometimes have to defend the
anti sharing crowd. Seems many people think music is like
an Elvis movie, you hop up on a stage and the sound is
perfect and everyone knows right where the song is
going.... The floodlights come on..Yeah right. sometimes
it all just falls together and sometimes it takes a
considerable effort. God bless you for this effort, it is
sweet to the soul.

up at first and for quite a while I didn't realize that it was the instigator.

The trouble with commenting after "everyone and his
brother" has already done so -- is that there is not much
left to say!

So I will simply add my $0.02 by expressing my
admiration for your performance on this piece. There is a
great amount of variety, from trills to tremolos, fast
picking, bell-like harmonics, and lovely rubato phrases.

I would never have guessed that you had so much trouble
recording this; it sounds very natural and live.

Great job, Bill!

If I had a lapton I guess it would be much easier but being that it was my first
time recording in the bathroom and I used a G5 tower it was a challange to
make sure the lines where long enough and that everything worked which it sure
didn't and really it was the hub that was the major factor of most of the
problems.

Thanks

bringing out the qualities of the Santa Cruz guitar. Even in my studio where I
usually record I couldn't enchance the deph of ambience and sustain of the
