Description:
Back again with another 'Legacy' mix of a previous posting. This was the original arrangement for 'Falling'. No Pianos, different bassline and more lyrics in this version. Ultimately I decided this version was over-long and re-edited it to the version previously posted. Now it can have it's own moment in the spotlight before I completely re-arrange it again - which i'm in the process of writing for.
If you liked 'Falling' then here's another spin on the tune - if you didn't like 'Falling' I'd give this a miss.
Lyrics:
is it me - the only one? can no-one see what's going on? and we're falling, we're falling. we eat it up and spit it out. we use it - abuse it beyond any doubt. and we're falling, we're falling. [CHORUS: and stuff you're face and take what's yours, let the children fight your wars. saving grace with known unkowns and they'll never take the blame. fat man dance and make them laugh, poor man sing and make them cry, they won't see you steal yourself - and they'll never take the blame.] images and issues of consequence, you run and run, never turn to face. and we're falling, we're falling. slight of hand and trick of light, slaves to freedom everyone of us. and we're falling, we're falling. [CHORUS] [BREAKDOWN] trapped in light too bright to see, what's real or fake? this dying breed. and we're falling, we're falling. wager me who will go first - this fragile rock or your broken soul. and we're falling, [CHORUS]
Hardware:
15" Powerbook, M-Box, Shure Mic, Charvel 750XL, Fender P-Bass.
Software:
DoggieBox, Amplitube, SampleTank, T-Racks.

It seems silly to go on and on &mdash 08/29/05 - 04:40:42 PM
about your incredible ability with production, but your
songs are just some of the best-produced on the site.
Possibly the best.
You also have a great sense of song structure and how to
use contrast to keep things interesting. Your breakdowns
are always awesome, this song is no exception. Just really,
really cool. Your lyrics, the vocals, everything, I just love,
love, love this.
This song is interesting, because I could see this being on
an album I would have worn out in the '80's. It reminds
me a little of Real Life and OMD (some of the songs on
Crush), but the song also sounds completely
contemporary. I guess that's considered timeless.
Amazed by you, Pie. [ Reply to This ]
I heard the first &mdash 08/29/05 - 04:52:48 PM
version you posted in December. At that time I remember
being particularly impressed with the guitars and song
overall. They are top notch here as well (still... whatever) but
what really stands out on closer inspection is the
outstanding word work. The chorus is tremendous- poignant
and lyrical. Great song- I can't wait to see what the super-
modified version sounds like. [ Reply to This ]
Great &mdash 08/29/05 - 05:04:17 PM
Well developed song with good, thoughtful lyrics. The
production shows a keen ear for detail [ Reply to This ]
I agree &mdash 08/29/05 - 05:10:02 PM
Your production skills and attention to detail are excellent.
more than that though, your skills as a songwriter, guitar
player and vocalist are truly outstanding.
The only nit pick I have about this track is that your lead vox
are slightly too far back in this mix.
I do hear echoes of Sting on this track, but as always you
have a unique sound and underlying emotion running
through your music.
I liked the orginal track very much but this version is better.
I'm gathering a very ecletic album on my itunes from you.
an excellent track Pie... [ Reply to This ]

What's Going On &mdash 08/29/05 - 06:05:08 PM
Classic theme of the hypocrisy of society. Unfortunately
it's been going on for fifty years, at least. Probably as long
as old Erectus has been around.Good job describing it and
the music echoed your anger and frustration. Well done! [ Reply to This ]
Nice rocking tune &mdash 08/29/05 - 08:06:07 PM
You sure know how to rock, I like how it goes from loud to
soft at the beginning.
Nice singing! Cool

professional clean sound... look forward to hearing more of
your stuff! I like the uh-oh break! :-) [ Reply to This ]
Prince of New Theatrical Pop &mdash 08/30/05 - 07:26:51 AM
Excellent production, writing, pacing, arrangement, well
thought-thru track. Excellent use of layered vocals,
wonderful vocal edge and crispness; great guitar playing.
Love the Sting style, feel, in the verses especially, and the
strong hook of the chorus; the chaos of the talking voices
at the end; the changing amp settings of the guitars and
the other details. There is an out-of-slot tom hit in the
first verse after the words "going on" and some not-quite-
right-in-my-ears rim shots at "slaves to freedom" and a
few other places in latter verses... which is nitpicking on
an otherwise radio ready track. You are able to hold
interest at all times, create inventive yet strongly Pop,
everything I want to hear in a Pie tune. If you can fix
those drumming spots, this is a perfect song. [ Reply to This ]

you are nitpicking but I love you for it :-)
you're probable right. hopefully these little mistakes were eradicated in the
finsihed version posted earlier :-)
Am I the only person who posts songs backwards? Kinda sums me up really.

tom hit fixed, rimshots not. &mdash 08/30/05 - 08:47:17 AM
It's interesting to compare the two versions. They're both rich with interesting details. I agree with Tobin on the rimshots, and they do stick out here, but I had to listen pretty hard to get the tom hit. The syncopation in the rimshots in that one spot seems a little superfluous, and I would just straighten it out. It does seem like a drum part out of a Dave Matthews song just in that one spot. Not that that's bad, but it seems a little out of place for this song.
I like the extra lyrics and the cacaphony of voices in this version. The extra length doesn't bother me, and I don't really miss the piano all that much, though the later version had a bit more dynamic range, it seems. [ Reply to This ]
You are amazing talented man! &mdash 08/30/05 - 09:24:36 AM

This is one of the most amazing productions I have ever
heard on this site. Not only is the recording crystal-clear,
the musical ideas are fresh and lively and quite
imaginative.
You employ a variety of effects which work really well in
this song. I particularly like the one you used on the vox
lyric: "trapped in light too bright to see".
Your pacing between the various musical sections is
excellent, holding the listener's interest. I like the
alternation of the relatively quiet sections with the more
driving beat ones.
This is simply a magnificent song! Great job on all fronts.

top of the heap &mdash 08/31/05 - 01:28:36 AM
Production, vox, harmonies, guitars, bass, drums, lyrics
(have I missed anything?) are all absolute top of the heap.
Only thing I can hear that could be improved is probably
the bass volume and definition - maybe just a tiny bit.
The playing overall is brilliant - so utterly professional.
Love it, thanks,

it's not a problem. some people don't like this sort of stuff. hell, the song
even bugs me a little and that's why i'm in the process re-arranging it.
thanks for your concern :-)

Just like Mother, I like both versions. (I went back and
listened to the earlier version again to compare.) This is a
great tune no matter how it's dressed up (or undressed).
Very nice, Pie! [ Reply to This ]
You... &mdash 10/18/05 - 04:02:22 PM
...blow me away, Pieman! Why are'nt you a professional producer as
well as a graphic designer? Asides from that, ur an amazing musician.
Anyway, enough already! Safe. (as country john would say). [ Reply to This ]
great production &mdash 10/21/05 - 04:16:48 PM

hear from Toad the Wet Sprocket or Gin blossoms. Folky pop-rock.

You're a mysterious character, Pie. You ride that razor's edge
between lurking and participating in the community, popping up
once in a blue moon to submit a playful, and very short one-sentence
post -- and every couple of months you submit a really killer
track. I'm looking at the sequence of gaps between the dates, and
it looks like you're about due to blow me away again.
I can hardly blame you for taking so long to reach this level of
perfection, but I'm about ready for another one. My birthday is
December 21, it would be nice to have one by then. Looks like that's
near your 2 year anniversary of your membership. I hope you
celebrate by submitting a song.
Oh, and brilliantly written socio-political commentary here. [ Reply to This ]

Excellent! &mdash 01/28/06 - 05:04:07 PM
I loved the song and was thinking of a commentary but then it caught my
eye that you're using Amplitube for your guitar sound. This song is a
definite testimonial to what it can do. I haven't used DoggieBox so you've
piqued my curiosity on that as well. But, much more than that, it's a great
song with captivating dynamics and meaningful content. Thanks. [ Reply to This ]

you have such a great sense of songcraft... melodies are always
interesting... phrasing, and flow... the whole thing is so well crafted but
doesn't sound contrived or formula driven... on top of all that you can
really play ... the guitars are you yes??

Loved the whole thing. Thanks. Your songwriting is creative as hell,
and there's a real spark of accesibility through out. Real big chorus in
here and it leaves me hummin right along, well after the last chord.
