Description:
This is one of many songs I wrote in coffee shops around Brisbane. I shall dedicate it to the waitresses of this world. For it is a very important job that you do, indeed.
Lyrics:
I thought I'd find you here
I love the way you make my coffee
But saying I'm here for the material offerings
Would be much too simple
Because I'm only human
And I'm just a man
You'd look out of place in a supermarket
You'd look out of place in a supermarket
It's what you don't know
That draws you to me
And it's what I don't want
That makes me want you so bad
Don't look like some fool
Just for my sake
Cos you're already in trouble
When you see the warning signs
You'd look out of place in a supermarket
You'd look out of place in a supermarket
Your pretty face is too good for everybody here
And I am only here because you are
It's obvious to you, I see
That I've been here before
You'd look out of place in a supermarket
You'd look out of place in a supermarket
Your pretty face is too good for everybody here
I thought I'd find you here
I love the way you make my coffee
But saying I'm here for the material offerings
Would be much too simple
Because I'm only human
And I'm just a man
And I need the perfect thing to say
You'd look out of place in a supermarket
You'd look out of place in a supermarket
Your pretty face is too good for everybody here

solid &mdash 08/31/05 - 09:31:36 AM
the production here is solid, and the song structure is also
pleasing. i especially like how the verses merge with the
chorus, it's a nice chord change. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks for listening and commenting, Scooter. I'm glad you liked the chords.
I always try and keep the progressions a bit interesting. Thanks. [ Reply to This ]

Wonderful you're back! &mdash 08/31/05 - 04:12:48 PM
I am so happy you're back! With another real Nolan style
song! You don't know how many times I have been at your
page to look for new songs. To me you're one of the
absolute most enjoyable songwriters not only at this site
but in my whole music collection! And one of the absolute
best singers and voices too!
This one goes straight to my favourites. I don't go much
for details when listening but for the mood, how the song
makes me feel. And as so many others of your songs, this
one gives me new feelings, shows me new moods, makes
me listen wide open, like if there's something I need to
learn from the heart of the man who wrote it. Often at
days I suddenly get the feeling I need to listen to a Nolan.
Now, here, I have one more! Thank you! Only tens from a
great fan! [ Reply to This ]
Wonderful you're back! &mdash 09/05/05 - 06:00:13 AM
Thanks for your comment, Curry. Your encouragement and support is always
really appreciated. By the way, it's great to be back! You're an awesome
guitarist; perhaps one day we can collaborate...

Nolan, &mdash 08/31/05 - 08:51:01 PM
you've been flagged on my fav's list, with me waiting for
your next, for ages...
This is great. I love it. My wife loves it.
I always heard the Finn brothers in your stuff before, and
it's here again. Your singing is awesome.
If I'm not mistaken, you've got some more equipment,
right? The recording is terrific. The bass is McCartney-
esque... once you notice it, it's ear candy, perfect melodic
pop bass... The suggestions of electric twelve-string recall
a version I have of Crowded House with Roger McGuinn
doing Eight Miles High..
Drums must be programmed, but they don't sound
machine-like to me. Neither are they intrusive...
So. I like it. This is exactly what I love in rock songs, right
here. Keep playing and writing. Let me know when you get
the contract. Let me know when the CD comes out. Let me
know when your tour gets to New England. That would be
in the U.S. You'll find as you tour that you start to lose
track...
I have spent much of the night promoting this song...
Love it.

Nolan, &mdash 09/05/05 - 06:09:40 AM
Thanks so much for the comment, Ed. I truly appreciate it. I've gotta say:
You made my day. Neil Finn is my hero. It is very cool that you picked up on
it by listening to my songs. I like that. And Paul McCartney was definitely the
biggest influence on my bass playing! I can't believe all that can be heard (to
a discerning ear, of course) in this song. Of course, I didn't play the bass on
this one - I came up with the bass part on my bass, but recreated it using the
software bass for this version. Anyway, thanks again. And New England is at
the top of our list for our next US trip! Don't know if I'll have the guitar
though. [ Reply to This ]
I'm SO glad I listened &mdash 09/01/05 - 09:52:03 AM
...to Ejh and came to hear this song. It's absolutely
wonderful, Nolan. I'm a gigantic Crowded House fan and
while this reminds me of them (possibly because of your
accent) it's your own sound, really.
I'm responding to so much in this song, the lyrics, the
melody, the guitar work. I love the rhythm guitar,
especially.
Really incredible, falls into the category of "oh my word, I
can't believe I can download this without paying for it." [ Reply to This ]

ledebutant,
Thank you very much for the comment. It never ceases to thrill me that there
are some people out there like you, on the other side of the world no less,
listening (and downloading!) my songs. Unbelievable. Thanks for listening
and enjoying. [ Reply to This ]

Great to have some new Nolan! &mdash 09/01/05 - 07:35:49 PM
Your songs were some of the first on MJ I put on my favorites
list. To me they are one of the standards of quality here on
the sight. They are well produced, well performed, well
written and thought out. This one is no exception and I hope
its the first of a whole lot of new material (or even just a
little.) [ Reply to This ]

Thanks very much for your kind words, J. For a dude who's just sitting in the
spare room with an acoustic guitar and a funny looking white computer, I feel
so lucky for these comments and this opportunity. This really is a bloody
good site. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks heaps, Rebsie. I'm stoked that you liked the song. It still really
surprises me getting comments like that about my voice. I never once
considered myself a singer before I joined MacJams; I just wanted to share the
songs I've written. It's very cool, thanks. [ Reply to This ]
great production &mdash 09/06/05 - 09:36:21 AM
Nolan, it is so great to hear something new from you --
it's been awhile!
I am always impressed with the high level of production
values on your songs; everything is well-balanced, and
your choice of sounds and the way you combine them is
very imaginative. Your tracks sound clear, uncluttered and
not "overdone".
Your vocals are excellent; they have a very pleasing,
expressive quality. They're nicely balanced with everything
else going on in this song.
You truly do have a "signature" sound, which to me
indicates that you should do an album sometime. I'm sure
that you'd have a large number of people interested in
buying one. I certainly would.
Great job. [ Reply to This ]
Less is more &mdash 09/13/05 - 05:09:07 PM
I like the song. The production is decent, nitpicks aside.
Your singing voice is really good and anchors the song.
Your lyric is good, there's just too much of it. You can trim it
down, tighten it up, and not lose any of what you're trying to
get across.
I'm an opinionated SOB, but I'd rather give you my honesty. I
consider it one of the most valuable things I have to offer.
Then again, I may be full of it. [ Reply to This ]

...you to know, im dying to listen to this song, but i cant right now because im in the uni library, and as much as ive no doubt that the other students will love your song, i will probably get kicked out and we cant have that at the start of the semester! Anyway, Nolan, mate....I look forward to the listen :-) oh and lyrics are damn good. [ Reply to This ]

...on many occasions, i will keep this song close to my heart! finally....i
listened nolan. sorry for the delay! i really like this - such an unusal
chorus - the words i mean....but in a good way...so original and it
works. love ur smooth vocals as usual. :-) [ Reply to This ]
great pop tune &mdash 01/09/06 - 02:44:08 PM
Whoa..late getting ti this one. Great pop feel. You have the knack. great voice very sweet . I think the chorus vocal could have been sung with more of an edge. less soft. Vocal hook with horsepower. Maybe for a pop tune, a tad long. Maybe some singing guitar lines here or there. As as asong writer you are tops Nolan. [ Reply to This ]

Great Mix &mdash 02/18/06 - 08:56:25 AM
I'd call it pop rather than alternative rock and I mean that in the most
complimentary way. It's a great tune and you've got a great hook.
I got all homesick hearing your accent. It's been far too long since I've
heard people around me talking like that and, even after all these years, I
still want to go home. [ Reply to This ]
