Description:
Hopefully this one works!! Sorry to anyone who tried to listen to the last file of this song I recently posted which didn't play... This one should work!

Back to my music theatre roots with this one! This song was written by Tobin Mueller for his musical Creature, in which I earned my Equity card in 1997. I played an orphaned girl who has a crush on Victor Frankenstein. When I sang this song in the show, I was secretly watching him at his mother's grave. The track features organ parts played by Tobin using his new Charlie plug in (he just got it and wants to use it on everything now). All parts were recorded in Digital Performer, mixed by Tobin, mastered in Peak. "Do I Know Him" © 1997, 2005 Tobin James Mueller. Thanks to Tobin for encouraging me to post this.

Lyrics:
Do I know him?
I've never seen him here
Yet, does he know me?
He didn't seem to care
Yet, his hands they are the kind that heal
Heal all they touch, like mine
Will they find me in time?

When he saw me
He couldn't hear my thoughts
Yet, when I saw him
I heard the spirits calling
Mother...like mother calling from a dream

Will I see him if I return secretly?
Will he see me and hear the singing sweetly call my name out again?

Lovely voice, mix &mdash 09/03/05 - 08:35:01 PM
This sounds effortless. Pure, clear, sweet. I like the Charlie
plug-in too. Very nice, you two.

...perfect! Really nice collab. I realize this is a "showtune" but it really reminds me of Tori Amos. I could hear her sing this. :)

Perfect intonation &mdash 09/04/05 - 07:26:05 AM
You sing this so effortlessly. The Pop stylings you bring to a
song happen at all the right places, with perfect intonation. I
did this just before Charlie blew up inside DP and caused me
all sorts of problems, the calm before the storm. It may be
the last DP tune I can use Charlie for! (It works in GB2 just
fine, tho.) I really like the photo artwork, nice choice. Can't
wait for you to get a pre-amp so we can start doing he newer
songs I am writing for you!

Perfect intonation &mdash 09/04/05 - 12:17:33 PM
Thanks Tobin. Great songwriting. You write such beatiful pop tunes. You can
give such credibility and life to a song in a genre like music theatre or pop
that otherwise can often be repetitive and stale. Your songs always have
something unique that makes it special. Anyway, I loved singing this! Oh, and
I'm working on the preamp situation!

Beautiful &mdash 09/04/05 - 07:45:50 AM
This is just perfectly sung. And, as Tobin pointed out,
seemingly effortless.

You have such a versatile voice- from Rock and Roll
temptress to angelic sweetness (this one). I'm always grateful
to hear you sing!

Beautiful &mdash 09/04/05 - 12:24:26 PM
I'm glad it sounds effortless. Thanks! Tobin's songs are often deceiving in the
way that they can sound so simple and easy to sing, but are actually more
complicated than it seems. Small intervals in the melody and key shifts (or at
least suggestions of shifts) make this song hard to keep in tune... I'm glad I
could do it justice. Thanks so much.

I am flabbergasted &mdash 09/04/05 - 10:55:00 AM
... and one more little detail: I like your original phrasing too .. like for example
when you sing "Yet" so fast and pronounced

Also I must mention the organ work. Superbly done by you Tobin! (nice lesley ...
do you mean that that's not a real lesley?)

Wonderful "throwback" &mdash 09/04/05 - 12:13:25 PM
Such a nice sweet song with a strong musical theatre tradition behind it. I think I would love to have seen this show. It sounds something like "Wicked," only with better music and lyrics, and none of that screamy belting that passes for Broadway singing these days.

[ Reply to This ]
Wonderful "throwback" &mdash 09/04/05 - 12:31:29 PM
As much as I liked Wicked, you are very right about the "belting" popularity!! I
don't know why it is so necessary on Broadway now days. Practically every
audition I go to lately, I finish a lyric soprano song, and then the director says
"That was lovely, but can you belt?" It makes me so mad sometimes. So I have
to pull a song from my folder that I can just yell out and then suddenly they
are impressed. Ah, well. Now I'm ranting. Thanks for listening and
appreciating the song!

beautiful &mdash 09/04/05 - 01:47:01 PM
You've got a great voice, and this song shows of you expressiveness nicely. I assume the song wasn't originally arranged for organ, and I'd be interested in hearing what it was like in the show.

Just curious, do you ever sing this in auditions? And does Creature have any baritone songs in it?

[ Reply to This ]
beautiful &mdash 09/05/05 - 11:05:30 AM
Thanks. I haven't done this at auditions, although I have done Tobin's song
"Dreams," which is actually sung by a male part in the show. It's one of my
favorites.

Beautiful singing, &mdash 09/04/05 - 02:18:35 PM
lovely interpretation, Emily.
Beautiful music, Tobin.

I'm with Margritte, and can empathize with you on the
'screamy belting' issue. Most songs, in my opinion, just
sound better without it! (Maybe some out there just have
too much wax in their ears?)

Anyway. Very beautiful...would love to hear more like this
from you.
Thank you for posting.

Geat collab, you two!

Magical &mdash 09/06/05 - 09:57:56 AM
Thanks. I used a progression trick I enjoy, adding flats for verse variations. The
progression is a typical falling-by-thirds progression: D Bm G A, then I changed
the key by adding flats yet make the progression rise instead of fall: F Bb C
Dm // Ab/Eb Eb/G Fm/Ab Bb/F. The tag at the end does something similar:
Dm A D. As the singer changes thoughts, I like to change keys, but have it
sound like the tonal center is the same, just the sound darkens then lightens
again as the music recapitulates. I actually first learned this playing Sousa
marches in high school band, his second themes almost always add a flat or 2,
and then return to the original key for the big finish.

well played &mdash 09/05/05 - 09:26:30 PM
very versatile playing. voice fits in perfect. the classic touch gives it a feeling of warmth and beauty just like a prayer or a search for something that will never be found. i like it very much and it would get my vote if i was allowed to do so.

yum &mdash 09/05/05 - 10:52:39 PM
I just adore musical theatre. Can never get enough of it.
And this sounds like a great show -- interesting scene
between Victor and the singer.

I have no idea why belting is so popular, but with shows
like American Idol (which rewards belting) it is obviously a
popular form right now.

Emily, your voice sounds radiant in this. And no, it does
not sound simple; the melody sounds rather complex to
me, with a lot of vocal accuity needed. Wonderful
performance from both of you.

lovely little bit &mdash 09/06/05 - 09:18:08 AM
Emily, your voice is so wonderfully sweet and clear, and as
my theatre mom would have said, "Great diction!"

This is a lovely little bit of music, lilting chords with some
unexpected progressions. The organ sound complements
the voice perfectly; the range of sounds in this plug-in are
nicely varied, almost like a full orchestra. Very tasteful.

My only wish would be that this song be longer, but of
course I understand that it's part of a much larger
production! Thank you for sharing this lovely song here.

I was impressed by your singing, of course, but I was also
impressed by the tastefulness of your 'band' as the music is
beautiful as well but it doesn't impose at all on your voice.
Excellent production!

Yes and it's a band with a wonderful singer! The phrasing is perfect for a lovely
flow that, as others have said already, is all too short.

You have an amazing voice, amazing phrasing...

This is as close to perfect as singing gets, I think... And
not an easy one to do... Even a competent rendition of this
would be hard, but this is heartstoppingly good...

And Tobin: you, young man, we have spoken to before...

Great song... from this one song, I can imagine the whole
play... So much emotion, so much story, in so few lines
and words...

not because I don't like showtunes (I secretly love them,
don't tell anybody), but because I hate it when they are badly
done. What a relief! This is heavenly. I'd pay to see it
performed. Made my evening. Thanks, Tobin and Emily.

Thanks so much. Even the word "showtune" is cheesy, isn't it? The only
reason it is in that category is because it is from a show, but the song is
much more than that. I'm glad you listened and enjoyed it!!

This song is like a glimpse of heaven. That is an angelic
voice, Emily. This is the first time I checked your songs and I
ask myself why it took me so long to recognize your musical
gems in the vast mediocrity of songs here. I am partial to
songs with vocals and it doesn't get much better than this. I
have checked your rock songs, and, personally, I like the
tough, gritty, side of you even more. Somebody commented
you are not Alanis. But of course. You are way better!

How did I miss this?!? Emily, this is a really beautiful performance of a beautiful Tobin song.

What made it more amazing to me is the way Tobin described his writing approach further up the page - having had no formal musical training, it boggles the mind that there's a format for producing something so fine.

I heard bits of Kate Bush in there, but mostly I heard a fabulous performance of a very lovely song.

Thanks for putting this up!!
Neil

Thanks for listening, Rover. The character in the show is very pure. (She is
supposed to be around 12, I believe...) So cigarrettes and whiskey would be a
bit wrong! But, if you'd like a little more emotion, you can listen to some of
