Description:
No instruments, just voice. It's short, and a little strange, but I just felt the need to express some of those pent-up feelings after a week of such tragedy.

Lyrics:
The keening sound of wind
Waters churned opaline
The hubris of mankind
To dangers deaf and blind

And hours turn to days
The streets are waterways
The cries of wretched pain
Unheard in summer rain

Pandora's box is ope
And thus is lost our hope

OK - I'm off my high hirse about the sad ones. This is touching and works well with the accapella. The simplicity really works!

Thank you, Witty. There'll be happy songs in the future. Right now, living
through this national tragedy, all I could hear was dissonant mourning.

The a capella is a nice touch.

Thank you, jg. Harmonies are not my strong suit, but every once in awhile, I
give'em a shot.

I don't know, I personally think that the a capella "wind"
background singing is so unique and dissonantly
evocative of sorrow blowing through what little is left...
and not just your writing of the harmonies, but beautifully
softly sung too, and your poignant succinct lyrics. There's
a strange connection to Southern Gospel in a disquieting
way too, like echoes on the muddy waters of blues.

Drak, I debated all day whether to take it down. I have to say that your
comment is changing my mind. I purposefully wrote it with all that
dissonance, as it was the only thing I could hear as I watched TV. I was afraid
no one would understand that. As for the genre, I looked for the category
"spiritual". Not in a religious sense, but in the sense of the old plantation
spirituals, that sound that's uniquely southern that expresses both pain and
faith. Macjams doesn't have that genre and nothing else seemed right.

I'll leave it up. I just needed to get out some of the pain I was feeling over the
images I'd been seeing. That was the song's purpose.

I'm glad you didn't take it down. I just discovered this one,
and it moves me.

Man!...This one touched my heart Joanna...Very nice harmony. The content..., well, it's just what it needs to be..
It's a very sad thing what happened to so many innocent and even, not so innocent souls.
Your vocals are rich with hope though...As I'm just getting settled in to my new digs and finally back to routine, I can't wait to dig through more of your music at some point...
Thanks for posting this one though. It is a display of very seasoned and beautifully mastered vocal work!

resettlement; it can be difficult to uproot.

Thank you, Jackstone, and I agree. Suffering is universal, but even with these
terrible images are also stories of hope and generosity.

Nice haunting background vocals! I also like the fact
that there are no instruments... it gives it a lonely
feeling...

Thank you, Stun. As usual, I was experimenting, wondering if I could use
vocals as the musical bed, without the use of instruments. Since harmony is
not my strong suit, it was an interesting challenge for me.

Thank you, Caroline! It was short because, well, that's what I had to say. That
and the fact that I tend to freak when I attempt harmony.

beauty in sorrow &mdash 10/28/05 - 04:27:04 PM
I meant to comment on this last week after I listened to it, but forgot :P
This is a beautiful piece. Like sighs that weave and wander, trying to find the right words, the backing vocals are the perfect accompaniment to the lyrics.

It's perfect for what it expresses.
Thanks for sharing it here.

Thank you, Mystie. I daresay you would have done it better with your soaring
vocals, but this was one of those songs I felt compelled to write. It was as if I
couldn't let go of the images until I'd sung what was in my heart.

Joanna ... so glad you left this one up .. as I just stumbled across it .... I wish too that it was longer .... it was just lulling me and then it ended and woke me up all over again ! Sigh ! You should try harmonies more often .. they totally work for you ! Great stuff ! Keep em coming ....

Poignant and to the point. Rich harmonies that really capture the depth of the tragedy. Glad I got to listen.

I can notice you had the whole song in your head (or heart) before start singing the first note. And that's a great thing.
