Description:
This is a traditional czech song. About love. Favorite of my mum. It is very simple, melody and lyrics as well. Im not much of a musician so i have to seek help somewhere else. Richard was so lovely he recorded for me guitar strumming + harmonica. So nice of him. In such a short time.

ceilidh: singing, guitar picking
rschletty: harmonica, guitar strumming

Lyrics:
Lasko boze lasko,
kde ta luda beru?
Na horach nerostes,
v poli ta neseju.

Lubosti lubosti
mala som ta dosti,
ale uz ta nemam
ani medzi prsty.

Keby sa ta laska
na poli rodila,
nejedna panenka
hlavu by zlomila.

very free translation :)

Love, oh god! love,
where are you coming from?
You don't grow on hills,
you don't come from fields.

Love oh dear love
i used to have so much of you,
but now i don't have
even the tiniest grain in my fingers.

If happened and love like a wheat
on filds would be growing,
so many sweet maids
would get their heart so easily broken.

You have such a gorgeous voice, Pavlina! Perfect for this
style. And there's nothing wrong with your guitar either.

crystal clear voice &mdash 09/05/05 - 09:25:44 PM
Your voice sounds very powerful and soft at the same
time. Quite beautiful singing. The guitars were great
background accompaniment... Richard, nicely done, and
thanks for helping the young lady with your talented
guitar/harmonica, and helping her navigate GarageBand
and the website.

Ah, Czech folk music, now this place is cooking! I look
forward to more of these gorgeous songs from the land of
Dvorak and Smetena!

This is a lovely tune, well-sung. I agree with Drakonis,
your voice is soft and powerful at the same time. And I see
you are getting good help from rschletty. An excellent
first post, Pavlina. I am looking forward to more from you!

tom i see the "explicit" beside the song name, but have no
idea what does it mean. when i was posting the tune, i was

explicit &mdash 09/06/05 - 05:52:50 AM
"Explicit" means the song contains lyrics or words that may be obscene or
offensive. It is a warning to listeners. You can remove it by clicking on the
"Edit Song" button on your song page (just above the photo and song title).
Then you will see a choice for "yes" or "no" under "Explicit Content?" Just click
"no." That will fix it.

A fun collab &mdash 09/06/05 - 07:25:58 AM
Here were my comments, made to Pavlina when I listened
to the simple, unadorned MP3 recording she sent me
(which had her voice and picking guitar combined):

"Lasko Boze Lasko is a beautiful song! How wonderful
your voice is. So delicate yet mature. Bravo!"

Pavlina: I really enjoyed collaborating with you. Don't be
afraid to ask for more help with GarageBand. I'm sure
others will offer to help you make more "magic". Thanks
for posting the lyrics. I will be singing this
wonderful Czech song at Old Man River Cafe on October
14.

Oh, you mentioned that you play tin whistle. We'd love to
hear that.

A fun collab &mdash 09/06/05 - 09:13:26 AM
When I sing this, I'll probably transpose from C to D or E. And I'll use these
lyrics (adapted from Pavlina's "free" translation):

Love, oh God, Love,
where are you coming from?
You don't blossom on the hills,
you don't flower in the fields.
You don't blossom on the hills,
you don't flower in the fields.

Love, oh dear Love,
I had so much of you.
But now I do not have
the smallest grain in my hand.
But now I do not have
the smallest grain in my hand.

But if Love were to grow
like wheat in the fields,
so many hearts of sweet maidens
would break, so easily would break.
So many hearts of sweet maidens
would break, so easily would break.

Very sweet voice &mdash 09/06/05 - 02:21:43 PM
Pavlina, you have a lovely voice. And I think you can make
it sound even better by believing in it a little more! It has a
beautiful tone ... your singing is precise and full of soul. In
some parts of the song you sound very settled and
confident, and that's when your voice is at its best ... it
really soars, and then it sounds stunning. In other places
you sound slightly less confident, as if you're not quite
sure you're going to get it right. I think if you can make
yourself believe that you have a good voice (and I promise
you, you have!) and have faith in your ability to sing, your
singing will get better and better.

OK. We will get tougher with our criticism. Send us a recording that is not so
wonderful! Just kidding.

Pavlina, the things you need to improve on are these:

1) To reduce background noise, consider buying a plug-in USB "Snowball"
microphone by Blue. Or buy some other external microphone (which might
require what is called a "pre-amp" or "digital interface").

2) Improve the timing of your picking guitar. Try recording the guitar first,
then create a new track and record your voice. Use headphones to monitor
the guitar while you record new tracks. Add some penny whistle while you are
at it!

3) The volume of your voice and guitar in your original MP3 was lower at the
beginning (with noticeable background hiss or noise), but the volume
increased with strength as you went along and really "got into" the song. I
made adjustments in the version I mixed which is posted here.

That is all. You are well on your way to pleasing a lot of people with your fine
musical skills!

I think the best thing is the strength of the your voice, which goes well with the strong folk melody, but the harmonica really works well to add the right sort of flavor.

Trying to record the guitar and the voice separately is a good way to make it possible to fix timings and levels later on in the mix, but for folk material may not give you the proper feeling. Any way, I think it might be good just to keep at it and it will become better and better. This is a pretty good start.

This reminded me of one of my best friends from when I was a wee lad growing up, who just moved from Prague to Bratislava.

thank you jim for your comment. the reason why i separated guitar and singing
is, that im not very good at playing instrument. when i play guitar, i cant
concentrate on delivering the messages, hidden in lyrics. i know exactly, what
you mean. i hope, that it is just a question of time, to get out of my self, what i
would love to get out of my self. im appreciating every your comments and im
very grateful for them. so don't worry to be even harder on me :)

The voice! &mdash 07/02/07 - 08:32:27 AM
Well, I'm not saying anything new, but you have a really lovely voice! And moreover, there it is capable of both power and gentleness. See? I told you I wasn't saying anything new!

I will add, though, that the instrumental accompaniment is a bit overbearing for my taste. Not only could it be softer, to allow the listener to focus on your voice (which, after all, is the most important part of a song), but the textures could be sparser, for the same reason.

But no biggie! It remains an excellent song.

[ Reply to This ]
clark, &mdash 07/02/07 - 10:05:34 AM
i fully understand, what you mean. actually this is a trad czech song and in our trad music is no guitar at all. there is a fiddle, a double bass, dulcimer, clarinet etc. it might really sound little too strong for the singing, but at that time i was feeling a bit, that JUST a singing would be too little. that to make it really nice and strong it needs at least one two instruments, to make the sound richer, fuller. but i'm still SO very happy for all the lovely help i got from richard. he was so kind to me, to do everything what he did.
thank you so much for your comment and advice clark. i'm SO very glad always to hear, what can be improved and fixed. thank you again :)
ps:what is sparser? it feels like that by an accident was hit a wrong button on the keyboard. but because of my poor english, i can not figure out the word and i neither found it in the dictionary. and it is important to me :)

... &mdash 07/02/07 - 01:27:31 PM
Hi Pavlina, thanks for your friendly response!

"Sparser" = "More sparse"

"Sparse" = "thinly distributed," the opposite of "dense."

So, a person might say, "the trees are dense in that section of the forest, but they are sparser (more thinly spaced out) over there."

In music, 'sparse' and 'dense' can be used to refer to texture. A texture with, for example, 30 instrumental tracks, all sounding at the same time, might be called very dense (!), whereas a texture with just your voice, a violin, and a double bass would be thinner, or 'sparser.'

A beautiful voice is a uniquely expressive instrument, and I feel that when too many instruments are added into the texture it can take away some of the expressive power of the voice. The same can be true when the accompaniment is very active, or 'busy;' that too can draw the attention of the listener more to the instruments than to the voice.

Hope this is helpful!

All the best, Clark

I guess it's all been said, but &mdash 09/22/07 - 10:31:29 AM
I feel compelled to add my voice to the choir. This is a lovely song about love, done by a lovely and very talented singer named Pavlina. Your voice has depth and soul to it that makes it so beautiful to listen to. I really love this song, and I too would like to hear it done with a really clean mix.

Richard, your part in all of this is very well played and you can be proud of the effort you made here. My only suggestion would be to use a steel string acoustic instead of nylon string. At least I thinks that was what I was hearing here. It would brighten up the guitar part and fill out the song a little better. At least that's my feelings on this.

And Pavlina, I think what Rebsie said is right on the mark. You have a beautiful haunting voice, but as she said and I do too, sometimes you lack the confidence to just let it come out. Believe me girl, there is no reason for you to lack confidence in your voice or your singing ability. You are a very good singer with a wonderful voice.

I Love this song and and the work you both have done together on it.

Ed

Dear Ed &mdash 09/29/07 - 01:27:05 PM
you can do what ever you want with the song. I will be happy. The only problem is, i don't have anymore the garageband recording in my computer (with all those separated tracks of voice, guitar, harmonica). It is all gone. Can you somehow download the song and use that? And, well, you really can not play anymore or is it just a little sarcasm? Because you could make a wonderful c/w music of it.

i truly think you are too kind. i don't think i am an naturally born musician, but i don't think i am too much out of tune either. i think it is like with that triceps on your arm you want to make bigger and stronger. you have to go regularly to gym, lift that kind of weight which is the most suitable for you. do not take too heavy one, cause it could ruin you for long or do not take a very easy, light one, because that would be just a waste of time. do exactly what you have to do as often as you can and results will come very soon :) instead of carnitin or special protein for supporting and right development of your "instrument" you can drink raw egg or mashed onion with honey or simply chew tuns of apples. i heard they clean your throat.
micinko thank you for your words and for your so big and warm support. you are so special...
yes and thank again to rich who was so very king and helpfull :)

song is already almost a fossil, looking at the date of posting, but so more your comment pleased me after all that time and made me happy :) I am really glad you like it.
I am a big heart broken, because I couldn't do any music past months, because of traveling and now, when i can again, the bugger fast track doesn't want to work. Ach well.
Thank you for lovely comment Andreas

Pavlina, In the nicest possible way. You sang like an angel a truly amazing voice you have. You are a beautiful spirit inside and out.
Your sweet voice told me this fact.
I will be especially listening to this one for years to come as often as I can. And thank you for if I had not seen you had fav my new uploaded unfinished song. I may never have got to hear this fantastic song.
lovely lyrics. too.
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful music.

This is indeed the best song that I have heard so far on here.
And believe me I have listened to a good few, just look at my home page. Everything was mixed so perfect but it was your amazing voice that captured my heart, I listened with my earphones in. God Bless.
Well done to all. Peace Dee xx

unfortunately &mdash 03/26/08 - 11:32:33 AM
it doesn't have more verses boy :(
Yeah... I could repeat the three ones already sung, cause you wouldn't understand anyway (as you said :) and you could imagine what ever ;) But I just stick with the original. If I was a musician, I would add some wonderful fiddle solo, but I just badly tickle my guitar and that's not enough :)
I am very happy you like it.
Thank you for listening and your comment :)

you could just copy and paste the song in the program so it repeats a couple times :) ofcourse one can just put it on repeat as well.

Gentle, but passoinate! &mdash 03/26/08 - 09:12:18 AM
Your wonderful voice just wins the heart over. Simple, but effective folk backgraound by Richard is the perfect accompaniment.
Very beautiful!
