Speechless (w/ Katchoolik)

Description
Back in June, I saw a post from Katchoolik asking for a singer. I jumped at the chance, since he does some great work. It turned out that he didn't just want a singer for the song...but lyrics too...which was a little more than I could take on at the moment. However, I liked the tune so much, I couldn't say no.

In true fashion, it took me until now to finish the song. I struggled initially to find a direction for the tune, but I returned to his working title, Speechless, and it all started coming together. (If the tune sounds familiar, you may recognize it from rshletty's take on the same collaboration, Breakout.)

Lyrics
[ verse 1 ]

As a symphony of silence fills the room,
no amount of conversation could fill this empty space dividing me and you.
‘Cause love left this place a long time past, but no one says a word
And still our hearts remain unheard.

[ chorus ]

And so we go.
Speechless from the things we never say.
Words only complicate our lives.
(What use is conversation?)

We cannot breathe.
We cannot speak.
Pieces of what we used to be
broken by life and love and left
to think we can’t be better off this way.

[ verse 2 ]

Seems memories are all we’re clinging to.
But we’d be lying to ourselves to think there’s something left. Yeah, it’s time for something new.
Instead we bury all these feelings down and keep staring at the walls.
And still we smile through it all.

[ chorus ]

[ bridge ]

Wait a minute here now can't you see
we're dying from the weight of silence?
Wait a minute here I think if we
don’t turn back now we won’t survive this.
Walk ‘cross the ledge. Step from the edge
with nothing left to guide us.
I know we’ve fallen but there’s still a long way down.

[ solo ]

[ chorus ]

Speechless 2
Hey John,

man, it took a while, but you come up with a great
version of Speechless. Love you vox and the lyrics
are great. This is different from the "Breakout"
version, and both versions are great.
Great background vocals in the ending man,
good job.

Cheers

you fill the silence with...
awesome lyrics and vocals...very different from the other version "Breakout" but i love your singing and expression in this song...very unique...love how your vocals complement Katchoolik's solo and how you ended the song with the chorus...great voice!...simple, powerful and heartfelt vocals with a sad longing that leaves one speechless but wanting more

Katchoolik: awesome guitar solo...rips the silence apart...your music brings out the best from other musicians

Gobsmacked
Blamm - excellent lyrics and singing. Johnny - great
musicianship and music. Both of you - excellent song here.

re: Gobsmacked
Appreciate the kind words. Obviously, he made it easy by giving me a great song to start with. Wish I could play like that.

I'm not even through the tune...
...and it's already so good...

The dependable katchoolik groove is there, the
instrumentation is full but leaves room for the vocal, and
the vocal is a great pop/alternative/rock performance... it
would fit into some realms of country, too....

My only tiny nitpick is that when the distorted guitar
comes in at the "wait a minute" line, something is a little
off in the mix through my system... (a little distortion
creeping in? the compression kicking in differently?)...
that's a nitpick though, and probably a click of the mouse
or turn of the knob from perfection...

The solo is great. The lyrics are great. And I can't say
enough about that vocal.

Really nice song, guys.

I'm not even through the tune...
Thanks, Ed! If you're referring to the distortion on the vocals on the bridge, I thought that would be cool...though not sure how well it worked in the end. I have a hard time listening to myself sing, so I tend to try an bury myself under effects when possible ;)

re: fascinating
I know Johnny's original idea was to have multiple takes on this track by different collaborators...I hope a few others are done, because I'm always fascinated by how people can take the same piece of music and go in polar opposite directions with a song.

There you go...
The solo in this song remains on track. I can't see
much wrong with this song. It is a tight number that
would easily fit in a radio playlist. Easy to listen to
without being overdone. Good work.

great
I love what you did with this. Great lyrics and singing,
Blamm. I think it could use a little harmony in places but it
still holds up as is. The overlapping lines at the end was a
real nice touch. And, Katchoolik, the music you provided is
excellent as always.

re: great
I totally agree about it needing some harmonies...I tried a few things, but they all seemed to...well...suck. So I didn't. Thanks for the kind words.

Cool
Quite lyrical. Your melody is nicely woven into the fabric
of the soundtrack. And you express your sentiments well.

It is most enjoyable listening to another take on Johnny's
soundtrack. Goes to show that there are a myriad of
possibilities with any given base of rhythmatic sound.

This is awesome
I heard the music for this months ago, Always listened to it without any vocals, many many times. So to hear such a great song fleshed out is wonderful Great great vocals, great lyrics. Mr. Blamm, great job, really. Beautiful
