Lyrics
We were both very young when we first met
we saw what we wanted to see and the ballad was all we could feel
Any two could have been that committed
but chance made us something new, something unreal

All these years I've been doubting myself
and I never believed we were anything more
than a grudge of indefinite spite
For the time we were happy enough
All the fights we've been saving for fear of breaking the silence
Who could love a love like ours all these years

You look at me as though I had something to give you
It's a long while since we knew... what was it... love... love
I've always had a place for precious things
And I buried you there with apologies for your own good

All these years we've had nothing to say
in the dark when the passion was over
Goodnight let's leave well enough alone
tomorrow is another day
Every breath is a wasted chance to tell you I need you
Who could love a love like ours all these years

All these years I've been seeing it wrong
and I missed all the life in between us
and the ballad, it just keeps playing on
And now it feels real enough
We've been so much more than words could endear
I've been falling in love with you all these years

Done it again!!
Can't miss pairing up with Peter, Johnny!! Wonderful
vocals as usual, great lyrics, brilliant production - yet
again, I'm dumbstruck by your work. The simple
instrumentation just adds to the feeling and skill in the
vocals. Very nice tune Johnny. Bloody marvelous!
Thanks,
Neil

Wonderful
A very full-ripe song! Great production! Sounds like you two
have been a band for years.

As so many times before I stand dumb by admiration for
your brilliant composition Johnny ... as well as you guitar
work!

And I think you Peter are doing a wonderful job as singer and
songwriter in this great band!

Nice to hear
a ballad that doesn't stick to your hands because it's so
sappy and sweet. No maple sugar here... just great
musicianship, terrific lyricism and a catchy hook.
Outstanding production, gents.... and some seriously good
guitar too!

Nice to hear
Thanks, AC. I was a little wary to put this under Ballads because of how sappy
ballads can be sometimes, but I guess it is a ballade none the less.

Excellent
Wonderful singing, Peter, and great playing and music bed,
Johnny. It's very enjoyable listening to this. Very professional.

This is SOMETHING...
Great backing track...this weekend must just be a
katchoolik-heavy place in the cosmic stream... Really
great constructions...

Love that "chase the tail" guitar break...

Peter, this is another exceptional vocal... the lyrics aren't
"pop regular", it's another one where you step out into
that Bowie/Gabriel place wherein you're inhabiting a
character, giving voice and being to a person, as much as
just "singing a song"... The lyrics are complex but simple,
like life...

This is quite something, gentlemen...

Ed

This is SOMETHING...
Thanks, Ed. Glad you liked the lyrics. It opens a lot of creative doors when you
take a character/story approach to songwriting. The trick is to still be sincere,
to find that person, that feeling within your self while portraying things that may
be fictional.

volatile pairing
Yup... P&K are a dangerous mix. Peter, the lyrics are very
well written/thought-out and touching, and beautifully sung,
reminds me a bit of stuff off Pink Floyd's Division Bell album.
Johnny's guitar/synth background is also driving, ingenious
and engaging twists and turns, complex, but always
resolving delicously. Wow, great song is about all I can think
to type now :-) Oh, and 9s across the board.

magnificent on all fronts...
Peter, your lyrics are really something. And to top them
off you've got this unique voice and style of singing that
is so winning. Impressive.
Johnny, I especially liked that solo. Your guitar playing
is this cool blend or so technically correct and yet so
flowing witht he feel of spontaneiaty. You and Peter make
a great pair in this song
This tune just sounds so good. Good stuff!

You have to love that the top two ratings picks are collabs with Katchoolik. You two knocked it out the ballpark. Seriously. Great production.

Wow!!
When I saw who had done this song together, I really
didn't even need to hear it to know it would be great. Two
of the masters deliver, what else, a masterpiece! Great
marriage of words and music. Peter's vocals are very
passionate and Johnny K. always delivers with that guitar
and production. Muy bueno gentlemen!!

A suggestion
Great production, guys... you have a nice thoughtful
song, easy to listen to. I especially liked the melody
in the chorus "All these years...", etc. My only
criticism is concerning the solo section. When the
solo breaks, it is wonderful... a nice little surprise
and change of pace to the rest of the song.
However, when it kicked up yet another notch and
got extra noodly, I felt it started going off in a
distracting tangent. When the song finally returned,
it was like "oh yeah...so that's how the song started
out". If that last part of the solo section was
trimmed down, I think the overall mood of the song
would be stronger. Just my two cents!

Excellent
If I were to describe my adoration of this song in one word -
I wouldn't answer. No one word can sum it up correctly.
I particularly loved the slightly faster guitar break about half
way through the song - excellent guitar work.
The only thing I didn't like was the drum sound - the snare
in particular. Sounded too fake for my taste. But that's a
minor issue.
Great vocals as usual, Peter.
Excellent work, guys.

great concept and production
It always amazes and mystifies me how music and lyrics
and vocals come together. (Sort of like how artists manage
to paint pictures!....it's beyond me, but it HAPPENS.)
Anyway, everything comes together superbly in this
collaborative effort.

The music here is very interesting; the choice of sounds
and the way they're combined is excellent. I especially like
the guitar work on the latter part of this track.

There is a lot going on here, but it all is well-balanced
between the elements.

The string sound is a very nice touch throughout, used
judiciously and sparingly. I'd like to hear just a shade
more reverb on it though.

The vocals have a unique quality; you've got a very good
voice for this style. The lyrics match the musical content
well.

Excellent job all the way around!

Did...
... you get any inspiration from David Usher? Hear some of
his vocal stylings in there.

Good songwriting and performance all around. Something
was missing from the production... can't quite put my finger
on it... maybe it's too dry. But that aside great song.

Keep up the good work.

cool ballads
great lyrics and singing...your voice sounds a bit "strained" (in a good way though), but i think that adds to the sincerity and longing in the song

Katchoolik: wonderful guitar solo (maybe just a tad too long?)...you always know how to pluck your strings to express more than words could ever convey

WOW! Look at that Peter, I commented on a track of yours 2 months ago, and
just today you were getting around to checking out something by me and the
only reason is because of all the controversy. Grow up and come down off

Wow
It actually took me nearly two years to even notice you made this totally dickhead comment. I don't remember the controversy in any detail other than I do recall there was a period way back where you kept acting like a total jerk in the forums.

So, I commented on one of your songs and you responded rudely because I took two months to comment on a song of yours after you had commented on one of mine. Seriously pathetic. I don't comment on people's music as some sort of barter system circle jerk and I don't expect others to either. I comment because I am genuinely moved to do so and have something to say, regardles of their commenting on mine. It was more than likely that your extremely hostile attitude in the forums put me off to even listening to your stuff for a while before I decided to just look past that.

So, fuck you very much for the attitude. I'm sure you're probably actually a decent guy in person but your online communication skills have left nothing much more than a vague memory of a guy who was always being a dick to everyone in the forums here, accusing innocent people of conspiring against and repressing you somehow.

Fucking tell ME te get off my high horse? Right.

Pardon the delay in ranting a response to your comment, a rant you will certainly never read after so much time. It's more for those who might come across this and want a good flame return for shits and giggles.

Hard to believe my ears

Is this MacJams.com or StarSearch.com? I'm still guessing.

The professional quality of this song blew me away! This
sounds better than any song I've downloaded from iTunes

I Had A Love
I recall, now. What an unexpected flood of memory.

Musicians-san, the strength of the restraint shown here is
formidable and Zen-like. The complaint is no complaint -
it is a space created and inhabited by "the ballad". Crisp,
clean, spare yet full.

Even in restraint, the Keys and Tele truly soar. The BU
Vocals are lovely and the hand-struck tom at the end of
the break is so human-sized. Did I mention the vocasl?

I guess you get my point.

This song is that great. The rest of the world needs to hear it.

I could see the middle instrumentla break being edited, if only to tighten up this tune into a radio song. Personallly, I loved the break to showcase the playing and build some different textures.

Unique voice made even better because you sound different from most everyone in Pop and Rock today. You sound a bit like Bowie when he didn't suck.

Your voice was so crisp in this one. The piano and guitar
workout very well together. I was waiting for it to break out
into something more rockish at some points which would be
cool. Great guitar playing also.
