Washed Away

Description
This song was just a guitar riff and a chord progression when Cobain shot himself. For some reason I couldn't stop thinking about how music can get in to your head and eventually take over. It can be all consuming.

This song is about this possession of sorts. What starts out as innocuous and well-meant can turn sour and deadly. I think Kurt was washed away by this very same tidal wave.

Don't blink or turn away for a second, because you can lose yourself at any time.

Chock full o' great riffs
You've managed to weave and layer a number of great riffs
together in a very cohesive form. Lots of power and drive
behind it. Very appropriate title because it kind of pulls you
like an undertow from the opening.

Nice music beds
This has some very cool ideas. I dig your grooves. YOur
variations. If there is anything, it is that melodic voices are
too straight in my ears, not enough syncopation are voices.
Most of the phrases sounds like a music beds waiting for
something more to happen over them. I like your stuff and
wonder if you have considered adding lyrics and vocals, or
offering the tracks as collaborative beds for some of the
guitar soloists on the site?

Missing pieces
Thanks Tobin, for your interest and comments.

You have hit the nail on the head with respect to my areas of weakness. When I actually played real music I was a bass player and my writing style was less feel-based and more precise. I'm a left-brained student of music, relying more on structure and math than soul or emotion.

But I am learning. MJ has helped me realize how I can add depth and colour to my songs through rythym, tone and melody. I am trying to become more organic.

The fact of the matter is I can't sing or even play my instruments all that well. I am totally ignorant when it comes to certain genres of music, jazz especially. My musical theoretical knowledge is quite basic as well. All of which contributes to a weakness for melody that is able to float above and weave through the music rather than follow it like a faithful family pet.

It's frustrating as hell. I can hear and compose music in my head but I have so much trouble finding the vocal path. I still haven't shaken my tendency to think in riffs versus arrangements. I blame it on a steady diet of cavemen metal while growing up. Too many years of simplicity has impaired me somewhat. But with any luck I'll be able to grow.

Besides, it's amazing fun.

I would love to collaborate, primarily with vocalists and guitarists but it is so easy to stay self-contained. Old habits die hard. I do write a lot. I have words looking for melody which is why I haven't attached any lyrics to any particular song yet. Perhaps I'll post some lyrics up here for public use and see what happens.

Thanks again TM. Hope to stay in touch.

Nice one
Liked the various layers here, only complaint would be that I didn't feel the emotion you speak of in the description. Musically though it was excellent. Thanks for sharing!
