Description
My second African/tribal inspired song. There's a few errors (my drumkit started playing up) but other than that the basic concept is there.

Harmonic content
Nice syncopated rhythms. Would love to hear some Harmonic
content on top of it. It's labeled "Demo" so perhaps more will
be added later. Looking forward to the finished Jam...

Just You Wait...
Oh yes, all in good time. If you liked this my first African/Tribal song has some harmonic content, it's called "History Not Geography".

payback
Just returning your request for a comment (you asked on my 17/8
piece... bit slow in reply I know). Fortunately for me, I took a class on
African music last year, got to learn a bit of the theory and spent a lot
of time playing... so I've got a decent idea of what should be happening
here (I am by no means all knowing or anything).

Unfortunately this piece is missing one of the greatest parts of african
music/drumming. African drumming uses lots of different and
individually simple rythms together to make the fantastically complex
mix of rhythms that they're famous for. Unfortunately there are no
cross-rhythms here... you have just the one rhythmic layer and thats it.

To give you a simple idea of a way to do this... here's what I can
remember of one of the simpler songs we did in the drum class.

First of all, we had a bell pattern in 12/8 (though of course, its not
actually thought of like that, but its easier for us to get our heads
around it). Keep in mind, almost all african songs have a bell pattern,
its the basic backbone of every piece and all parts relate to it.

(I'll try and make this look right)
Ting - Go - Go Go - Go - Go - Go (repeat)

Then we had a shaker pattern that effectively the same as the bell
pattern with a down shake on the gaps and an up shake on everything
else.

Up Down Up Down Up Up Down Up Down Up Down Up (repeat)

Then there was a single drum that did this rhythm:

- Tak Tak - Tak Tak - Tak Tak - Tak Tak

Then there was another set of drums that did a more complex rhythm I
can't remember (Sorry)... and finally another set of drums did a simple
rhythm in 4/4 (resulting in some triplets when played against
everything else)

Dom - Tak - Dom Dom Tak -

Each rhythm in their own right was quite simple to play and somewhat
un-interesting on its own... but together everything was made much
richer and complex.

Hope you found this interesting/helpful

Yeah thanks, this was the second African song I did. In my first one ("History Not Geography") I used several cross-rhythms, each as you said was a simple idea alone but together created a solid overall sound. Have a listen I'm sure you'll like it.
